Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
A junior engineer working for a small engineering firm in Cocoa Beach. The firm focuses mostly on NASA projects.
Neil is Jean’s best friend. When Jean was turned into a genie, Neil became Jeanie’s master.
She may have gotten Lasik (one less thing to float around the cabin) but according to the NASA web site glasses are acceptable if her vision is correctable to 20/20.
Well, I was kinda being rhetorical with the glasses question, I had a mental image of the last panel side-by-side with an image of Milhouse from the Simpsons w. his coke bottle lenses. Maybe a photoshop rhinoplasty would help. ;p
I was wondering if someone would notice something in orbit that wasn’t there yesterday.
It’s in the same orbit as the iss so it should have set off the collision alarm.
“in the same orbit” covers a huge range of space; it’s not as if objects in the same orbit were all inexorably drawn together — that would make the constellations of communications and weather satellites useless fairly quickly. It would be a pretty sizeable coincidence for Rouyaa to have lofted the shuttle into an orbit that would put it in proximity to the ISS… which, according to the rules of comedic plotting, would make it almost a certainty.
The ISS orbits at approximately 250 miles (402 km), the highest shuttle flight was 386 miles (621 km), easily within the realm of possibility. Of course, Rouyaa could have blipped the shuttle all the way to Mars if she wanted to.
The real question is this; how much of Jeanie’s power went down the drain creating this orbital love nest, and will Kazom regret his decision to load Jeanie up with Rouyaa’s memories later when her power might be needed to defeat some Outer God’s appearance? (We’ve already seen Yog-Sothoth in the MC and they share the same universe.)
She could blipped the shuttle all the way to ANDROMEDA if she wanted to, but she WANTED it near Earth. It’s still unbelievable how she put it so dangerously close to ISS considering how many other options she had.
… close in terms of orbit parameters. She could also put the shuttle on orbit which would by near-miss with 16km/s speed difference.
And no, I don’t think this took significant part of her power. It’s just moving things, nothing was created.
She erased the memories of the three roommates, so yes. Of course, she has to know that Zoey saw Neil in the shuttle, and I don’t think Jeanie is actively present.
It certainly had weight while they were launching. But as long as its mass was accounted for (likely in Zoey’s personal gear allowance) there wouldn’t have been any problems. And there she is, in the ISS, so apparently there weren’t any problems. Well, until now…
All of the above being true, it’s still odd that Zoey has such an instrument instead of modern binoculars. I’ve read that there’s a Celestron reflector on board; it’s not fixed, so it can pointed out any convenient window, and is used mostly for casual Earth observations. The ISS orbit makes it a poor instrument for scientific observation. But I’d think a good pair of binocs would be useful for spotting satellites and other orbital junk.
Handheld telescopes generally don’t go above 40-50x magnification because hand jitter becomes excessive without a stand or mounting holding it steady. For Zoey to be able to identify Neil, Atlantis would have to be closer than about five miles from her.
Looks like Jeannie will finally loose her ” hat” to Neil. I think Jennie and Neil have final veto power over whatever actions Rouyaa and Andy make. They may be choosing to go with the flow.
Well, I figured Andy and Zoey will be going at it, and, somewhere between the beginning and the end of it, the two of them would, er, “wear off,” and it’d be Neal and Jean.
Shouldn’t NASA or Mission Control or whoever the space radar people are be on the radio screaming at the ISS already about something as large as an orbiter being so close to them? She should not have been asleep at this point or being surprised or needing a telescope.
No one who watches the skies for a living notices this…etc and [ding]
Eh, it just “appeared” there a minute or two ago. I’m sure Mission Control doesn’t watch the Station like a hawk ALL the time. If the shuttle sticks around long enough, it will probably show up on a radar sweep, but for now, they haven’t gotten noticed, yet. Yet.
This would have to be deliberate. Space is big, REALLY REALLY big. There are a lot of orbits, and only a very tiny fraction that would be within unaided visual range of the ISS. The easiest orbit to put the shuttle in (Least energy spent) would be geosynchronous directly above the museum (no net change in momentum, and stable enough to be ‘safe’ for a while.)
Since the ISS is NOT in a geosynchronous orbit, she clearly did NOT pick this “easy” orbit.
Is it that easy? Sure, there’s a lot less velocity needed for a geosynch orbit, but 35,786 km high is a lot more than 422, and the potential energy of the altitude would have to come from somewhere, just as the kinetic energy would…
Depends on how it was moved. I no longer have the math to figure out the changes in gravitic potential energy of an object from the 3 main sources- the earth, the moon, and the sun, when it is moved from the earth’s surface to some 40k kilometers from the earth’s center. But however much energy is needed, it pales in comparison to the amount to move 2 80 kg humans 65 years in the past to Omaha beach (at 220 KM per second, they moved over 45 billion kms in space, + whatever energy is needed to travel through time).
But why are we even considering the change in potential energy? Djinni magic probably creates wormholes to move things, so even the KE might not remain constant from point A to point B
Turns out we just missed Barbara Eden’s birthday (August 23rd)… she just turned 92, and holy crap, she looks great for her age! See here.(link). Wow, I hope I look that good when I get to that point.
Well Andy finally took the hint and Neil may have an awkward future conversation with Zoey and Jean.
its for the best that she thinks this is a weird dream.
Zoey’s nose makes her look like Milhouse.
Does she still wear glasses?
Her nose does look larger than in her image on page 691, but she’d always had a rounded nose.
I doubt she still wears glasses. Astronauts have extremely stringent physical requirements, so she very likely got LASIK.
She may have gotten Lasik (one less thing to float around the cabin) but according to the NASA web site glasses are acceptable if her vision is correctable to 20/20.

My question is – can Jean erase Zoeys memory? Actually… Was that ever addressed?
She erased the memories of the three roommates, so yes. Of course, she has to know that Zoey saw Neil in the shuttle, and I don’t think Jeanie is actively present.
Zoey has an antique brass…er…telescoping telescope? How much does that thing weigh?
A brass one would be really nice, but likely it is made of lighter newer materials.
It doesn’t weight anything, she’s in space.
well, it still has mass, so if pushed it could damage something.. 😛
It certainly had weight while they were launching. But as long as its mass was accounted for (likely in Zoey’s personal gear allowance) there wouldn’t have been any problems. And there she is, in the ISS, so apparently there weren’t any problems. Well, until now…
in cartoons the laws of physics don’t apply LOL

Maybe it has sentimental value—like she used it as a child and it’s what sparked her interest in astronomy.
Or it’s an antique, brought along as a personal item for the novelty value. Like Kirk’s glasses in Star Trek IV.
Handheld telescopes generally don’t go above 40-50x magnification because hand jitter becomes excessive without a stand or mounting holding it steady. For Zoey to be able to identify Neil, Atlantis would have to be closer than about five miles from her.
Their right outside her window >) LOL
Bow chicka bow wow
If it is a very long posting it could become the eternal space station, or if it’s long and hellish, the infernal space station.
Looks like Jeannie will finally loose her ” hat” to Neil. I think Jennie and Neil have final veto power over whatever actions Rouyaa and Andy make. They may be choosing to go with the flow.
And somehow i saw all this happening weeks ago
Oh there is going to be a lot of explaining to do for this one.
Now that you mention hat, it looks like it is floating off to the right. First time she has ever done anything without it.
Not the first time, she removed it during the “I want to seduce Neil to see why Belle thinks he’s better” arc.
Okay, big points to CD. I never saw that one coming.
Well, I figured Andy and Zoey will be going at it, and, somewhere between the beginning and the end of it, the two of them would, er, “wear off,” and it’d be Neal and Jean.
You meant Andy and Rouyaa.
I can’t remember *every* character name.
Shouldn’t NASA or Mission Control or whoever the space radar people are be on the radio screaming at the ISS already about something as large as an orbiter being so close to them? She should not have been asleep at this point or being surprised or needing a telescope.

Yes, someone SHOULD’ve noticed.
Eh, it just “appeared” there a minute or two ago. I’m sure Mission Control doesn’t watch the Station like a hawk ALL the time. If the shuttle sticks around long enough, it will probably show up on a radar sweep, but for now, they haven’t gotten noticed, yet. Yet.
Well, Rouyaa finally gets a few happy moments with sort-of-Andy. Good for her.

I believe this whole subject was covered in a treatise by Larry Niven – “The Theory and Practice of Teleportation”.
like most things, they use a mystical magical dimension where time and space has no real meaning…
I believe that’s called “Congress”.
This is the type of thing that drove Dr. Bellows mad.

I wonder if Zoey will recognize Jean’s prom date… What was her name again?
I was wondering the same thing.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEANNIE !
Turns out we just missed Barbara Eden’s birthday (August 23rd)… she just turned 92, and holy crap, she looks great for her age! See here.(link). Wow, I hope I look that good when I get to that point.
AHH! No!
Heh.
