Chapter: Story 09: I Dream of Technicolor
Andy sure is looking middle-agey today.
Andy sure is looking middle-agey today.
I wonder how much magic it would take to get congress to change it collective mind. Of course isn’t using magic to influence someone’s mind against the Genni rules?
Affecting the collective minds of Congress, would take very little magic. Not much of minds to affect.
All you have to do is change everything they wrote down about the topic just before it is revisited. They read their notes to reference, and then see everything ‘they’ wrote is about supporting the funding instead of rejecting it.
D’oh..
Wrong place, wrong time and definitely the wrong wish to grant.
A few years have passed since the last comic we see..
and Rouyaa, if you see any Safes, please don’t poof yourself into one. STAY AWAY!
The safe bit already happened. It was mentioned back in 383.
I see the background is starting to be fixed, but it’s still busted.
We are definitely in the late 1970s now. The Enterprise was the first orbiter of the Space Shuttle programm and was delivered to NASA in 1975. But the programm had to face serious budget cuts by congress during these years.
In 1978, NASA nearly had to shut down the whole programm if not for Air Force’ invention. The Air Force had already developed several spy satellites, which could only be launched with the orbiter. Thanks to this intervention, congress granted further funding. I guess it pays out to be backed by the military.
One year later, in March 1979, the second Space Shuttle, Columbia was ready. So, my guess is, that this comic is set in 1978, just before the Air Force intervened on behalf of NASA
Now I just wonder: Does Rouyaa have no other choice than to grant that wish, or is she already living with Andy on her own free will with limited power, as Jeannie did in the TV series. Then, she wouldn’t be forced to grant that wish.
I believe that they “free will” stage only kicks in after she has granted the mandatory three. As Andy has been steadfast in not getting any wishes, this wish would be mandatory.
That’s what I was wondering too: Has Andy already used up his wishes or not? One wish was used to keep Sid from going to the frontline in WWII. Andy didn’t want to make this wish, but he stated it. So, there are two wishes left at max, but we don’t know if he had asked for any other wishes since.
I think it’s the 80’s.
This sounds like a conversation about replacing Challanger which was lost in January ’86. And Endevour built as a replacement.
I see problems ahead, wasn’t see told not to help them with their space program?
I know, right? But if it’s an official wish, she doesn’t have a choice.
Caught between a Haji and a hard place…
Genies are famous for giving wishes that fulfill the letter of the wish, but not what the wisher wanted. Clearly this is a case where the genie should do this. Rouyaa could grant a wish that gives NASA enough money to retrofit Enterprise and build another shuttle while creating complications that see the money squandered or one the two tasks failing. She only needs to provide the money, not ensure the it is used for the right thing. That results in her fulfilling the wish but not aiding humans in leaving the planet.
Unfortunately, Rouyaa may not be ruthless enough to do that.
“Caught between a Haji and a hard place…”
Oooh! That’s a good one, Robert! Kudos!
Yes, but do such orders apply to wishes that are fulfilled under the genie’s three-wishes contract with a Master, or only to actions taken outside of that?
Anyway, this is two wishes that we have seen her grant. That leaves one more.
Wait, when has she previously granted a wish? She’s done magic, but I don’t think Andy’s ever actually wished for anything.
I think this is what ijuinkun is referencing: https://jeaniebottle.com/?comic=jeanie-bottle-381
I wonder if that counts, though? He certainly phrased himself carefully so as not to actually be saying “I wish for Sid to be safe.” And we saw Rouyaa doing magic herself just a few pages earlier.
Uh oh. She’s calling him by his name! That’s always trouble
Oh, uh, Robert? A tiny spelling bit… “Sweetie” doesn’t have a Y in it.
Huh, I never knew that. But multiple online dictionaries agree that “sweetie” is the more appropriate spelling. I’ll fix it.
Yeah – I can’t say why, it’s just kind of a idiosyncrasy, I guess – after all words like “sticky” use a Y.
I think the “and” at the top of the final panel should be emboldened more. Andy must have emphasized the word and his speech is confusing if you miss that.
I recall that Congress did vote to fund an additional Shuttle — years later, after Challenger blew up. That certainly didn’t advance human spaceflight and I hope that’s not the direction the plot is leading.
Yeah, the bold typeface doesn’t show up super well after crushing the page down to it’s release size (CD makes them at ~3300px wide, but we release them at 900px wide). I’ll see what I can do.
Can we address the Ties for a second… Who think’s Andy’s co-worker has horrible tie taste?
Maybe that was the latest fashion back then?
In the mid to late ’70s I saw worse, hell I wore worse. Although I think both their ties should be much wider in that time period, although NASA engineer types did tend to favor retro narrow black ties then.
Well, the style is about right – ties were getting almost ridiculously wide in the 70’s – but I would have to agree that the color & pattern is pretty awful.
Maybe his wife/girlfriend picked it out. 😉
If Rouyaa grants that wish, she changes history as we know it. The Enterprise was never reworked into a true orbiter; it only flew as a glider carried into the air by a specially equipped 747.
And yes, it would be the late 1970s now. So have Jean and Neil been in their past for at least seven years?! Or has Jean learned how to time-travel routinely now?
Who says Jean and Neil are still there?
Yes, the Enterprise was just the drop test shuttle to test the proof of concept before they were to build the real space shuttle that they intended to send into space. They never intended to send the Enterprise into orbit and it was only about 3/4 the size of the Columbia Shuttle. It was later put into the Johnson Space Center in Houston so they could use it down here so that they could use it to support the other Shuttle up there. Remember Apollo 13. To come up with a plan to save the crew, they had another capsule in either Houston or Cape Kennedy to work off of. Although the Enterprise never went into space, it still can be used to support the other shuttle in space and be used to solve potentially life threatening situation in space.
Uh… no. Completely wrong.
The Enterprise was their Static Test Vehicle. That means they used it to test all kinds of things to make sure they’d fit the flight-ready shuttles – like the 747 carrier aircraft, the launch pad SLC-6 at Vandenberg, and the stacking facilities at the VAB. That means they had to make it the same size and have the same fittings as the flight shuttles, to every significant detail that mattered for testing purposes.
And at least according to the source cited in the Wikipedia article, it was indeed originally intended to be refitted and flown:
Welp, looks like someone’s getting their powers stripped a number of strips early (I was expecting it much later tbh)
Does the hair of Mr. Bad Tie look familiar? Jean’s dad?
Was this all before or after January 28th, 1986?
SO far most people seem to deduce it is late 1970s… But only I know the true date! Muhahahahahahahahaha…*cough* …ha ha ha…..
And since they’re talking about Enterprise and retrofitting her for space flight… I think this is a bit before the Challenger Disaster.
Well, it depends. After all, if there’s time travel in Star Trek, it could be any year that the Enterprise ended up in. :p
She’s violating genie law … AGAIN. Is it any wonder they don’t want another genie of her type thumbing their nose at the rules?
That look she has in the last panel..
That does it! Who could be mad at a girl who makes faces like that! That is a look of devotion and of love…
Who cares if she broke a silly rule! We all need to see more faces like this!
I knoooowwww! Her expression is so cuuuuute!
I vote for her having complete immunity to any stupid genie rules and laws! Just for having such a cute face! How could you cause that look to ever disappear?
So, whatever was going to happen, just cancel it! We need more of this adorable expression!
Kawaii!!!!
Wish? Did somebody say wish?
