Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
In her role as Haji's First, Lahab leads Haji's Harem. She is a Jann genie, one of the few elementals left in the world. She and Kazom are "old friends".
Guano is DEFINITELY going to need a harem for representative purposes. Also the mana batteries if he’s aware of that function, but the representative purpose is most important.
Jeanie’s priority in building the harem likely is to minimize work for herself. She’s going to delegate as much as she can.
I wonder how long it will take for Lahab to realize that Jeanie is too flippant to do a good job, and get Jeanie to delegate the task to her. On the other hand, Lahab might be too busy.
Unless I’m mistaken, the task of running the harem falls on the First Wife.
This from the information page: “Haji’s first is the head of Haji’s Harem and Haji’s be-quested favorite of the Harem.”
That be-quested favorite part might cause problems.
Guano is aware of the mana battery ability that comes with a harem, Blue explained it him (pages 550-552), although he said he didn’t believe it.
Jeanie, on the other hand, had already been booted out of her own body (was that a blank?) and missed the entire exchange. I’m not sure Lahab is aware of that ability either.
So I wonder if Jeanie will decide to add Natalie to the harem? Considering that Natalie was a genie in another timeline/reality I think she would be up for the task….Or fail miserably trying to get out of it.
An empty one, of course. Then again, the person trapped that way would assume the form of what they believe would be the ideal genie (page 161). What if Neil’s idea of an ideal genie is the blue one from Disney?
Alya is actually a member of genie society, so she’d know all about it. She’s young by their standards, but as we recently learned, she’s been around for 56 years.
Lahab: “You need to do a very important job that requires a lot of thought and diplomacy”
Jeanie: “Yeah, whatever.” casually invites someone
Lahab: concern
Jeanie obviously isn’t taking this seriously. Or worse, she’s thinking of this as a way of torturing Guano. Imagine poor Guano stuck with a harem chosen by Jean and vetted by his mother.
We’re not 100% sure that his mother doesn’t know he’s gay. On page 581 Shula says that she was “worried about Atty’s taste” but that doesn’t necessarily mean that she knows he’s gay.”
Jeanie invites someone who is her friend and has actual experience with Genie society. That isn’t THAT bad decision, despite her not thinking about it like this.
You know, we still haven’t really gotten Guano’s take on all this.
Sure, he’s gotta be resentful of being forcibly paired with Jeanie due to Big Blue’s machinations… But what about the Haji position? Does he want to be the next Haji? The ONE thing he’s said is that his announcement as the next Haji was a “day of great importance”. But he wasn’t exactly looking thrilled at the time…
I think maybe he wasn’t thrilled about sharing the stage with Jeanie, she’s been a pain in the neck ever since they met. Of course, a lot of that comes from how he treated her back on page 30, panel 2. A different approach might have garnered a more favorable relationship.
Remember what Blue said to Guano about drawing power from the harem? It only makes sense that they need to be genies. Assuming Blue wasn’t lying which is always a possibility.
Agreed. Although I didn’t actually think the green gown was all that bad looking. It seemed a bit like Jeannie was just overdoing the complaining part, probably just by comparison with her usual outfit.
I understand making comics is time intensive but is there a way to speed the pace of the plot per comic? In the span of two months, Natalie has gone on a boat and Jeanie took a lava bath and complained about her clothes. Trying to flesh out both Natalie and Jeanie’s stories simultaneously has led to the plot moving at a glacier’s pace.
Yeah but a lot of things happened in those couple of hours that was very important to the plot in El Goonish Shive. So you really can’t compare that to this
It’s a shame John Lotshaw passed away, or we could have Lennie show up for the wedding. (speaking of slow paced webcomics, Accidental Centaurs restarted what, 4 times in the course of it’s history?)
Not only that: Once EGS spent whole week (five pages) on two-thirds of second. Granted, lot happened in that time, but hard to beat ratio about 907200:1.
It could be that the Harem is responsible for running the government and maintaining order. Alya is a cute little cinnamon bun like you said but is she mature enough to actually be is charge of anything?
Yeah, so Guano not really going to need a harem for obvious reasons also like Jean’s new look. Jean will probably let anyone join.
Guano is going to need the harem, considering their actual function (longevity inducing mana batteries).

Either way works for me.
I would not object to this.
I very much would, since at this point girl-Neil seems like a “kick ’em when they’re down” sort of thing.
Araceli would raise some objections.
So? She doesn’t exactly have enough power for her objections to be heard.
She’s literally Guano’s favorite Niece. She has pull.
And whose bottle would Natalie be using?
An empty one, of course. Then again, the person trapped that way would assume the form of what they believe would be the ideal genie (page 161). What if Neil’s idea of an ideal genie is the blue one from Disney?
Neil has met enough hot genie girls and at least one jerk genie male (Guano), so he may also imagine the ideal genie as a hot girl.
Two “hot genie girls.” Araceli and Jeanie, and he doesn’t really care all that much for either of them when you think about it.
I wonder if Alya thinks the word “harem” means “fan club”?
Alya is actually a member of genie society, so she’d know all about it. She’s young by their standards, but as we recently learned, she’s been around for 56 years.
Well that was unexpected.
Lahab seems shocked at how that went down lol
I know, right?? CD is great at depicting a character’s emotional state, even without dialog.
Lahab: “You need to do a very important job that requires a lot of thought and diplomacy”
Jeanie: “Yeah, whatever.” casually invites someone

Right now Jeanie is probably more aware of the “friend” part than the “experience” part.

I wonder if Genie would fill the Harem with previous victims of her temper… She seemed pretty good at creating dancers 🙂
An interesting idea!
It would require empty totems, and I can’t think of a quicker way to create more enemies.
Do members of the harem *have* to be genies? That seems likely, but maybe they don’t.
Remember what Blue said to Guano about drawing power from the harem? It only makes sense that they need to be genies. Assuming Blue wasn’t lying which is always a possibility.
Shoulder pads? Does Guano need to have his women have bigger shoulders than he does?
It’s distinctive without being ornate or uncomfortable, which makes it effective as her new “informal wear” for around the Palace.
I would certainly pick this outfit over the green monstrosity.
Agreed. Although I didn’t actually think the green gown was all that bad looking. It seemed a bit like Jeannie was just overdoing the complaining part, probably just by comparison with her usual outfit.
I think it would be amusing if there were some confusion about the meaning of “build” the harem.
Imagine if someone “misunderstood” and insisted Jean construct the building that the harem will be housed in…
…and Jean created the most annoying building she could.

Try El Goonish Shive for a really slow paced comic! It took a year to play out a couple hours real time.
Yeah but a lot of things happened in those couple of hours that was very important to the plot in El Goonish Shive. So you really can’t compare that to this

Ok, “Mansion Of E”s 10 years for a day pales in comparison …

She’s a voice that Jeanie is inclined to actually listen to, so she will be able to act as a second conscience for her.
Doesn’t a second conscience require having a FIRST conscience? 😉
Jeanie has one, but rarely listens to it.
She must have it bound and gagged.
Compared to Jeanie? YES.
>snicker<
You don’t even know what it is. You ould be signing her up for ritual hamster murder, you know that, don’t you?
