Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
In her role as Haji's First, Lahab leads Haji's Harem. She is a Jann genie, one of the few elementals left in the world. She and Kazom are "old friends".
I wonder how thrilled Guano is to be taking over as Hadji and having to marry Jeanie. He may very well not want to do either and to be as eager as Jeanie to get out of it.
Like working with Jeanie on a scheme to do just that.
I’m not sure Guano has either the mental capacity or the flexibility to be willing to do that. And I doubt Jeannie has the diplomatic skill to persuade him.
Guano definitely has the mental capacity for it, as shown when he lied to the Blue Dijin’s face about serving him only to go rouse the guards, and was 100% willing to sacrifice himself to put the Blue Dijin down and re-seal them away.
You’re right about the other two points though. He’s not very flexible and Jeannie isn’t very diplomatic.
I’m sure he’s not into the whole “marrying Jeanie” thing AT ALL. And based on some hints about his personality from back in the original Rouyaa Arc, I think he *may* not be terribly thrilled about becoming Haji, either. Though he’s had several decades to change since then, so who knows?
Guano had the presence of mind to ask Asha to take his place as Lord (Lady?) after Lord Haji named him The Haji. I wonder if he’s still considering it.
Wait a minute. Araceli is still at the yacht party. I know she doesn’t care for Jeannie, but it’s a little strange that she’s not going to her uncle’s coronation when it seems like many genies are going.
A good point—and when Lord Shied says “all of Genie Kind”, it sounds as though he expects that nearly all genies of any importance in their society are present.
I wonder if this has something to do with whatever her official status has become, now that she’s apparently not Caley’s genie any more. She may have _requested_ time away from Genie society to be with her “new master” (who she failed to locate), which happened to coincide with this ceremony.
The events on this page are pretty strong evidence that Caley isn’t her mistress any more. She left her bottle in Neil’s bedroom with the intent of him using it to summon her later, and as far as I’m aware, only a genie’s master can do that.
Also her last line of dialog makes it petty clear.
Araceli is Guano’s niece, and the enthusiastic way she greeted him when we found out implies that they are or were still fairly close. So I can see Guano giving Araceli leave to spent the weekend with Caley, and maybe even assigning her to Neal as a favor.
We’ve seen it happen to conjured articles of clothing, but Jeanie’s green dress doesn’t appear to be conjured. The sashes may also be specifically enchanted to do the “turn white” thing for them, and it happened off-panel when they were given said sashes.
I think it’s time to reiterate that Guano is an ass.
In panel 4, Jeanie is obviously nervous and trying to make conversation, and no matter what people think of Jeanie’s personality, in that panel she’s demonstrating vulnerability. Guano’s response? Call her a child and destroy any chance at reconciliation since they’re stuck with each other till death do they part.
To be fair, it IS possible that Guano is nervous himself and not good at reading social clues and simply didn’t REALIZED it. Just because it’s obvious to US doesn’t mean it’s obvious to him.
prince guano and lord shied, this is ecoming organic. Where did our girl get the white sash between panels 1 and 3. Married to Jeanie. I finally feel sorry for Guano. It is getting interesting, very interesting.
I always thought that Haji meant that the person had done a pilgrimage to Mecca. I think the title Chris was looking for is “Mirza”.
MY understanding is that Mirza means “Memeber of the Royalty”
Yes, Al hajj is the pilgrimage, haji is one who has been on a pilgrimage. It is very possible the the writers of the original show knew that haji was a title and made some erroneous assumptions. And it’s similarly possible that the choice of the title was made intentionally, for reasons I wasn’t privy to.
From the IDOJ TV series, the leader of all Genies was referred to as Haji. It may be his proper name, and the name became a title as he passes it on to a successor, as happened with the name Caesar becoming a title for the Imperator.
Yeah, Guano knows how to hide his emotions well unlike Jean.
The next leader, Shit!

“lied to the Blue Dijin’s face about serving him only to go rouse the guards”
When did this happen?
I’m sure he’s not into the whole “marrying Jeanie” thing AT ALL. And based on some hints about his personality from back in the original Rouyaa Arc, I think he *may* not be terribly thrilled about becoming Haji, either. Though he’s had several decades to change since then, so who knows?

Guano knows he’s been over-promoted and fears he’ll make it obvious through failure. Authoritarianism is founded in insecurity.
For everyone’s sake, I hope they either get out of this or come to some sort of working relationship.

Maybe Araceli is too junior to be missed?

That would imply Caley made her 3 wishes, but there’s no evidence of that.

I’d say “fair”, but Jean did force Neil to be somewhere they didn’t want to be at the same time.
Will Jean rip off that outfit, or Guano’s face?
Are those genies genuinely cheering at Guano? Didn’t know he was that popular.
As far as they know, he is the hero who twice vanquished the Blue Djinn.
Just think of it like that scene in Shrek, when Fiona is getting married to Lord Farquaad… minions with signs.
Maybe it’s like the wedding signs in the Flash Gordon film. “All creatures will make merry”…. “under pain of death”
Wait, I thought that when those two get close now, their clothes turn white.
There’s that white sash that appeared between panel 1 and panel 3. Where’d that come from?

In an earlier strip, is was shown that their clothes turn white when in proximity of their betrothed
I imagine that, since the dress Jeanie is wearing isn’t part of her true genie self, it is not effected by this, so the sash just appears via magic

Are you sure this is supposed to be Arabic?
I thought the pilgrimage itself was called “the hajj”?

why is it every time I lord Guano name I think of bat shit! LOL 🙂
Prince bat-shit becomes King Bat-shit!
I just thought of something from the previous page. If Lahab is Haji’s First Wife, wouldn’t that make Qutb her son?
Rouyaa was the 23rd concubine. There are 22 possibilities between them.
True, but Eldest Son and First Wife kind of roll together with that Hubun Jadid thing.
If Lord Guano is marrying Jean, shouldn’t someone be throwing him a bachelor party?
Wouldn’t that require Guano to have friends?
I recently signed up for CD’s Patreon. Any recommendations on what to read first? I’ve only ever read Jeanie Bottle. Any other suggestions?
I like Rudd Productions, but it’s all good.
So . . . yes, it is a big day. Sheesh. Some people.
