Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
In her role as Haji's First, Lahab leads Haji's Harem. She is a Jann genie, one of the few elementals left in the world. She and Kazom are "old friends".
Now, do they all want to hurt Haji’s mate because of something like line-of succession, or step-mom distrust, or similar; or because of something that Jeanie herself did?
It’s also possible that they hate her for being the host of the Blue Djinn, who killed a bunch of Genies as part of a rebellion against their father. “You were the avatar of our greatest foe in recent memory, and yet now we are to be made to bow to you as Queen”.
In answer to the baldness question, in humans baldness is mostly determined by the hair of the maternal grandfather. If he was bald, the male grandson will be bald. In some families, there is also a family trait of baldness. So, if it holds true in this strip, the sons are bald because their grandfathers were bald. Their grandfathers were bald because their own grandfathers were bald. And on it goes back to the first djinn.
Of course, djinn are beings of the Plain of Fire, so maybe the hair just burns off over time.
also consider that Jean is female because that’s how he perceived genies. Get a bunch of people seeing genies as bald and taking up bottles, and you get a lot of curses/genetics of baldness added into the line.
So, they were in the immediate line of succession if anything happened to Haji or Guano, but any baby Jeanie might have with Guano pushes them pout of the way.
Are these the progeny of the previous Lord Haji, or Lord Guano’s? Because since progeny means descendants/children, if they’re Guano’s then Jean is now their step-mother.
Sooner they are Haji’s than Guano’s. Genies here can only reproduce with a mate due to the Hubun Jadid and Guano had only just been mated with Jean recently by it, thanks to BD. While not all genies are born/created as enfants, sometimes as grown adults, we’ve yet to see or hear about them doing the deed together yet.
Wait, so if Haji has children that could potentially be heirs to his throne and leadership as Chief of all the Genies (or at least the Si’lats), why aren’t they being considered for the job over Guano? Wouldn’t Qutb be like the crown prince or a candidate at least?
It seems like Haji’s leadership position isn’t hereditary. The genies of the palace have been saying for a while that Guano has been Haji’s “heir apparent”.
Just a thought…
If Jeanie has to wear that dress for the ceremony, what’s Guano required to wear? And if he shows up in his usual costume that’ll be just another reason for Jeanie to hate him.
Take Fatima aside and explain to her that you were forced to bond with Guano. They girl will help you find a way out of this but not until it’s funny. Q-tip could take over and be run by Fatima. Sisters always boss their brothers.
Fatima is in the Haji’s inner circle as his daughter. Girls from two yre old up tend to manuplate. At least my granddaughters do. If it is a chance to get rid of Jeanie she will help.
Loser society?
Genie society has been around far longer than 3,000 years (Kazom’s age), much longer than the Roman Empire lasted so I doubt you can really consider it a loser.
My first thought was you can’t compare genie “society” to human society when genies spend long periods of time isolated in their bottles. And why pick on the poor Romans? You could just as well compare them to the Inuit, Australian Aborigines, Chinese or the Egyptians. I really don’t know how far back those societies go, but all of them should be well over 5,000 years…
What would be really funny is if the whole formal gown thing is some sort of joke. Perhaps Alya is in on it (I doubt it, she seems too naive for that) and the two fashionistas set Jeanie up at the behest of one of Haji’s kids to embarrass her. Lahab never did comment on the gown.
It just hit me. Rodge only wished for the weekend not forever. When the cruise is over or on Monday the wish will expire and poof, Neil is back and upset. A revenge wish is in order if he can get Jeanie back or mabe with Araceli.
Rodge doesn’t get wishes. Jeanie changed Neil into Natalie simply because the two of them were arguing (sound familiar?) and she didn’t want to be bothered (page 761). There’s no expiration date on this transformation and if Jeanie doesn’t return Neil is stuck as Natalie until she does because, as we all know, Jeanie will forget she transformed him unless reminded (the Duke boys, page 363).
That dress would look a lot better if you got rid of the shouledr boards, shorten the sleeves and use Alya’s can opener to give it a thigh high slit down the right leg so she could walk. And when she sits down cross her legs right over left.
The shoulder boards don’t really bother me. Yes, the sleeves should be shortened so she can use her hands. The slit would work just as well as shortening the skirt, or puffing out the dress (genie magic, no hoops/bustle necessary), but wouldn’t the slit make the rest of the dress look off center and slanted? What really bugs me is the embroidery design framing the decolletage without a decollete. It looks like she is wearing a harness over a regular blouse, like a plow horse.
Could be deliberate. “I could never marry anyone whose shoulders were wider than mine.” —Clark Gable to Joan Crawford, “SNL” sometime in the late seveties.
The dress has a “hobble” skirt and is meant to keep her immobile so she cannot run away or make trouble. What it looks like is most likely not a consideration in its design.
She’s a genie, and a powerful one at that. If she put her mind to it that dress is not going to hold her. Why she doesn’t realize this is beyond comprehension.
It’s based on the “conspicuous showing of privilege” concept—by wearing clothing that makes it impossible for her to move, she is implying that she doesn’t ever have to get up or walk anywhere, because servants will bring her everything and anyone worth talking to will come to her instead of the reverse.
Meet your in laws Jean.
Kazom is lucky that he’s the only one who has hair.
Now, do they all want to hurt Haji’s mate because of something like line-of succession, or step-mom distrust, or similar; or because of something that Jeanie herself did?
Little bit of both, perhaps?
Entirely possible, yes.
I admit, I’m leaning towards this being something Jeanie has no real control over.
There, marker down.
It’s also possible that they hate her for being the host of the Blue Djinn, who killed a bunch of Genies as part of a rebellion against their father. “You were the avatar of our greatest foe in recent memory, and yet now we are to be made to bow to you as Queen”.
Other than everything that has been listed above, they have no reason whatsoever to ill disposed towards Jeanie.
That makes sense. The main reason I have against it is that it’s a feeling that would be there for any genie and isn’t particular to Haji’s children.
Probably just tradition. Genies live a long time, and trying to kill someone is a great way to alleviate boredom.
It’s always worked for human politicians.

Might just be a popular hairstyle or lack of one.
True. Some cultures encourage shaving the head, so many of these genies may not be bald but instead are shaven.
The guards on pages 445 and 467 have hair so it may be a personal thing.
Could be curing baldness is another wish they can’t grant.
also consider that Jean is female because that’s how he perceived genies. Get a bunch of people seeing genies as bald and taking up bottles, and you get a lot of curses/genetics of baldness added into the line.
That may be true for mortals sucked into an empty totem, like Jean was, but there are natural born genies that aren’t subject to that effect.
Djinn are Air. For Fire, you are thinking of the Iffriti.
You’re either a “replacement” mother to one(s) lost, or you’re competition to the position of favorite of their own mother(s).
More like “mate of the person who is about to succeed their father.” These aren’t Guano’s kids, they’re the (old) Haji’s.
So, they were in the immediate line of succession if anything happened to Haji or Guano, but any baby Jeanie might have with Guano pushes them pout of the way.

I do wonder if any of them are Lahab’s though.
Wait, so if Haji has children that could potentially be heirs to his throne and leadership as Chief of all the Genies (or at least the Si’lats), why aren’t they being considered for the job over Guano? Wouldn’t Qutb be like the crown prince or a candidate at least?

How does one pronounce “Qutb”, anyway?
Q-Tip
“Do they really want to hurt me…do they really want to make me cry?”
Thanks a lot… Now I have a Boy George ear worm in my head.
…And now, thanks to you, I do to. Until you said, “Boy George”, that tune had not occurred to me.
*sigh*
And I thought you were my friend.
It’s all Robert’s fault and he should be punished.
One move and I break out “Karma Chameleon.”
So that is how “Quat Euzma” is pronounced.
Don’t make me remind you that girls just wanna have fun.
I’ll see your Cyndi Lauper and raise you, Toni Basil.
Just a thought…
If Jeanie has to wear that dress for the ceremony, what’s Guano required to wear? And if he shows up in his usual costume that’ll be just another reason for Jeanie to hate him.
It will serve him right if he has to wear the same thing she does.
And I *SO* want to see that!
Take Fatima aside and explain to her that you were forced to bond with Guano. They girl will help you find a way out of this but not until it’s funny. Q-tip could take over and be run by Fatima. Sisters always boss their brothers.
You think Fatima will just believe her? Also, what makes you think Jeanie will find way out of this?
Fatima is in the Haji’s inner circle as his daughter. Girls from two yre old up tend to manuplate. At least my granddaughters do. If it is a chance to get rid of Jeanie she will help.
Qutb and Fatima do seem angry with Jeanie but Amin seems more interested in picking his nose.
Nice to know I wasn’t the only one thinking that.
One wonders if he’s mentally impaired. More than most genies, anyway.
Only if immaturity counts as mental impairment–which, in my case, it certainly did.
Ugh, back with these losers. Jeanie do something and make these losers regret trying to enslave your to their loser society.
Loser society?
Genie society has been around far longer than 3,000 years (Kazom’s age), much longer than the Roman Empire lasted so I doubt you can really consider it a loser.

I don’t like them and think they’re a bunch of idiots. Hence, I consider them losers.
Also? It’s a fictional society in a fictional story. Comparing it to IRL doesn’t help your case at all. Honestly makes you look a little sad, really.
When asked about my baldness, I just say I never got around to sanding my headboard…
The more I see Jeanie’s formal wear, the uglier it gets. Good grief that thing’s hideous.
Also, i thought green was Neil’s color.
Neil’s a princess too. He just doesn’t know it yet.
That’s a dangerous thing to be and not know it.
But I think you’re right.
Rodge better be damn careful about getting what he’s wishing for.
Wait until Guano arrives. Much of that ugly dress will turn wedding dress white.

I think the harness is expensive blink, mostly gold. I couldn’t help myself-what would she look like as Ruby Roundhouse.

Well, that’s handy to know. On the other hand Neil, wants to hurt her now doubt. But in a friendly way. Ish.
I honestly don’t know how a person knows another person wants to hurt them. It seems like a super power to me. Ish.
