Neil is Jean’s best friend. When Jean was turned into a genie, Neil became Jeanie’s master.
Msybe things work out better for Neil but worse for Jean? I always felt like Jean is destined to get the bottle… no matter what happens that’s a fixed point in history. Everything else is secondary… Jeannie might lose Neil as her first master
Speaking on phones is a lost art. People often spend five minutes volleying text messages back and forth on issues they could have easily resolved with a thirty second phone call, and when was the last time you saw someone in a phone store test (or even ask) how well a device worked as a phone. Society finally achieved the decades-old dream of a phone in everybody’s pocket only to discover most people really don’t want to talk to each other.
And no, before anyone complains, I suspect the creators actually do know that minors cannot rent hotel rooms in the real world. This is a sitcom universe, just roll with it.
This would take place before the Emoji movie, which I hope shamed at least some people to foregoing crappy little pre-made pics for actual phone calls or even (gasp) written letters.
I’m sure there’s a typographical version of the thumbs-up emoji out there, but I’m not quite enough of a geek to know it{;)
How would Neil not remember this? It’s pretty clear that Neil hasn’t had anything like a connection like as Neil the one he was developing with Zoey this since high school.
I’m picturing Zoey as a brain like Neil, and I think it would be interesting for the older Zoey to show up in Cocoa Beach or Jupiter Two in a future story.
That would be interesting, because, the only time that Zoey has ever meet Jeanie was in the past during the school prom. Then there several more question that need to be asked and they are:
1. Do we want Zoey to find out that Jeanie is a Genie and/or she use to be Jean Neil friend.
2. Do we want Zoey going back to being Neil girlfriend and have Jeanie getting jealous over Neil.
what Riniko said. Well, Neil doesn’t need that room anymore so take back your dad’s credit card and let Jean-wait–Jeanie has a suite they can use. Natalie can go to a movie while they , never mind.
When you tell someone what you think they expect from you instead of what you truly want to say.
A pretty awful affair of self censorship that leads to easily avoidable train wrecks on both sides of the tracks like this.
It’s like there’s a brick wall between them, & neither is willing to be honest with their thoughts & “preferring” secrecy.
That what Neil should do, but, we already know that Neil isn’t the type of person to do that, he too laid back and too reserve to so something like that. So he going to loose Zoey and he will loose her mostly because of Jean there too.
I think that Neil only chance now is if Natalie come to the rescue, because, she had 6 years to think about screw up that he made with here and actually have a chance to correct this past error that he made about not taking Zoey to the prom when he had the chance.
This is something that Neil would have remembered if it was a closed time loop… meaning that whatever Natalie and Jeanie get into should have been what actually happened from Neil and Jean’s point of view. If Larry’s suggestion comes to pass and Natalie has a sit-down with Neil, pointing out the error of his ways and steering him back towards Zoe, then that opens many opportunities. It also would seem to indicate that it is NOT closed and that what they do CAN have an effect on their present.
Let us suppose that Natalie gets Neil and Zoe back together before poofing back to the present. One possibility is that Neil and Zoe remain together into the present… much like the ending of Back to the Future. Things changed… not much, but enough to make it interesting. Another possibility could be massive changes to the present as in Time Cop resulting in an almost unrecognizable present with Zoe an unrelenting rival because of something that occurred during the intervening years (something that would NOT have happened if Natalie had left things as they were).
Some additional thoughts: @Guardingdark: I agree that Jean was destined to open that bottle and become Jeanie because there must be fixed points in a time flow. Change that and time-space unravels. Here’s a thought based on extending the possibility that Neil and Zoe remain together as I mentioned above. Zoe is the owner of the bottle upon their return to the present because in the new time stream, she was present when the event happened and took possession of it, not Neil, and she’s a far stronger owner than Neil has turned out to be (she is not going to wish for a sandwich, for example) because of some unexpected life experiences. Think Back to the Future again and the encounter between Biff and Lorraine in the car, only this time it’s Danny Bishop and Zoe with Neil intervening in the nick of time (because Natalie pushed him into it). Lorraine becomes a much stronger character after that incident.
Actually the things that can’t change in this time line is:
1. Neil going to Cocoa Beach and getting a job at place that does sub-contract work for NASA.
2. Jean coming to Cocoa Beach to be with his Friend Neil.
3. Jean having Belle for his girlfriend, because, that why he picked up the Genie Bottle in the first place.
4. Jean has to ultimately become Jeanie or it will blow up the time line too badly.
There can be some minor alteration in the time line, but, nothing major can be allowed to happen here.
@Larry. I disagree. There is some talk about a genies relationship to a mortal, in that a genie can give a mortal many paths to take- or just one, but it is up to the mortal to choose to walk down those paths. As a result, any path Neil makes will be down to his own free will.. and that could mean going in a different direction. You are listing circumstances in the original timeline that resulted in the fixed point, but these circumstances are not necessarily fixed.
1) Neil is not fated to go to cocoa beach or geting a job with NASA… There is no reason he ‘has’ to.
2) Not necessarily. Jean’s destiny is to get the bottle… thats fixed. The circumstances are not so important, if he is with Neil or not.
3) Belle is not necessary. There could be other reasons to get it, those reasons will manifest, even if the bottle just drops to him by accident.
4) Agreed, that is fixed. That is honestly the only fully fixed part.
I had this weird thought. Magical time travel might work differently.
If Neil is no longer destined to become Natallie in the past… what if that means Natallie becomes a real version of Natallie in the new timeline? Instead of Marty-fading she’s… doing the opposite? Becoming Natalie? Time adjusting to resolve the paradox by making her ‘real’ as her future origin no longer exists…
@Guardingdark: Weird, yes, but interesting. There’s a comic on another site that has a young man go back in time to retrieve an item his father lost in an effort to make him happy and improve their relationship. Instead, he locates the item and when he retrieves it his father returns, having been looking for it. The father thanks the young man (not knowing it’s his son from the future), retrieves his item and the past changes. The young man returns to his preset and discovers that having changed the past that tiny little bit, he was born female instead of male. This could easily go that same route.
It’s six to seven years ago relative to IDOAJB’s “present day”. Now, the series did begin in 2009, so if the timeline counted from then, then they would have circa 2002 flip phones. However, the beginning of the current chapter referenced the COVID-19 pandemic, which places it as the “present” of when the chapter started being written—i.e. it is no earlier than Spring 2020. This puts them in 2013-2014-ish, so any teenager who is able to spend $200-300 (or has parents who are) would have an early-generation smart phone. (BTW: the iPhone 5c was released in 2013 at $199 for the cheapest model, so it would be possible for the teen characters to have them in this chapter.)
To be honest I haven’t been the biggest fan of this storyline…
But if I had one take-away it’s that Neil and Natalie end up talking… not really about Jean, but about Zoey and what they ‘should’ do I think that would be fun. A Futurama ‘Fry you imbecile… YOU’RE YOUR OWN GRANDFATHER!’ situation. Where, ironically, Natalie ends up taking one for her past self – Neil.
And changes the timeline by keeping Zoey as a girlfriend.
Imagine Neil and Jean go back to the present, and suddenly he gets a skype call from Zoey asking, ‘Where’ve you been? we were supposed to go out tonight!’
@CD – Sure you have the storyline already… but… IDK if it ends the way I think you’ll end it, that story was better left in the first few chapters.
Hoping you do something more substantial with this chapter.
For that to happen, it would have to loop back on itself, which it hasn’t done yet. We are in the previous time loop right now and there was a previous time loop before that one too. That what I have been saying is that there are different time loops floating around out here and some of those time loops are going to be crashing into each other. There nothing set in concrete until they go back to the future they came from or the new future that they created because they went into the past and changed the future.
Just exactly how is this going to play out, nobody knows yet.
Sorry Neil that can be rough when your friends wont give you a chance to be heard.
You can pinpoint the exact moment where BOTH of their hearts break.
I do not think she wanted to accept Neil, she wanted you to ask her. Sadly, you listen to Jean too much.
Never end a text message with a full stop, unless you seek finality in the conversation.
Never end with elipses …
She used the question mark mostly right but there’s no question only the vague hint of a coming question which if asked could break hearts further.
So Neil ended it with nothing grammatical merely a picture of an upward thumb, avoiding the written word so vagueness can be returned with vagueness …
that does it, NOW i’m gonna CLOBBERIZE both versions of Jean.. so that they will know the YEARS OF PAIN, Neil has endured!!!!
Msybe things work out better for Neil but worse for Jean? I always felt like Jean is destined to get the bottle… no matter what happens that’s a fixed point in history. Everything else is secondary… Jeannie might lose Neil as her first master
Neil was the one that told her it was ok.

You don’t need to test. Smartphones are awful at working as phone. Also, talking cost more than texting … especially if you “text” using data.

Neil and Natalie can get together and talk about what a jerk Jean is.
Trying to convince the concierge that he’s over twenty-one?

Neil, call Zoey back and beg.
That what Neil should do, but, we already know that Neil isn’t the type of person to do that, he too laid back and too reserve to so something like that. So he going to loose Zoey and he will loose her mostly because of Jean there too.
Ouch…Poor young!Neil. Maybe something will happen to make things better?

“That’s rough buddy”-Zuko
for some reason i thought this was far enough in the past that cell phones didn’t have texting

guess Joey doesn’t believe in asking the guy she wants out to prom and just except the guy who asks her
GAH!
