A junior engineer working for a small engineering firm in Cocoa Beach. The firm focuses mostly on NASA projects.
Neil is Jean’s best friend. When Jean was turned into a genie, Neil became Jeanie’s master.
Is this the first time we’ve seen Jean’s sister? I wonder if she worried about not having seen her brother in a long time, since Jean probably hasn’t visited his family after he turned into a genie.
I think so. Perhaps she gets turned into something and Jeanie only turns her back after returning to the present.
(and this is despite the promise made to Natalie in the previous panel)
Yes, this is the first time that we have seen his sister. Prior to this point, we didn’t even know that he had a sister even or even what the family structure was that Jean came from even. So now we know that he had an older sister, mother and a father too, because Jean sister is talking about them. They obviously have a strained relationship with each other or Jean could be the black sheep of the family too. We don’t know at this point what is and what isn’t.
It’s an Orange Phone, or oPhone. Given that the “present” is 2020 or so (Covid-19 pandemic mentioned at the start of this chapter), and that they’ve gone back about six years, then it’s probably the then-new oPhone 5c, which sold for $199.
Does this world follow the IDoJ rule that genies can’t be photographed? (Or more precisely, did Sid learn that real rule from Rouyaa, or was it just invented for the show?) IDOJ didn’t follow that rule consistently—but then that’s a fictional television show, not the real, historical events portrayed in this comic, right?
There was an early story arc where Jeanie couldn’t be photographed, I think it was the one where Jeanie had to disguise Neil as himself because he had to go to a conference or something
Edit: Another comment mentioned that same story arc, but they said it was Rodge that was disguised of Jean
No, she took Rodge to the conference in New York City and it was to honor Jean work in doing review of other people work , Neil refused to go, because, he was busy and could not go. He use to do book review and/or TV review. Not only could Jeanie not be photographed, she also had trouble looking like her former self too, that why she had to get either Neil or Rodge to stand in for her.
What’s with that flash of light in Panel 3? It’s actually lighting up Jean’s back. Maybe its the flash on Madeline’s smartphone, which means she wants to post it on the web to maximize Jean’s embarrassment.
No, no, she’s taking the pix she promised their Mom of Jean’s date. Just a good, obedient daughter. No intent to embarrass her little brother, I’m sure.
I hate to admit it but I don’t remember Jean ever mentioning a sister, so it couldn’t have been that often. Or maybe I just wasn’t paying attention. Either way can anyone more familiar with the Archive help out?
“I don’t remember Jean ever mentioning a sister”
Here is my theory.
After the sister took Jeannie aside and gave her some home truths about Jean, Jean ended up disowning his sister (she who shall not be named – Tie in to another magical series :-)).
Madeline is mentioned way back when Jeanie was trying to turn himself back into a guy. Neil told him “You look like your sister but with a brush cut.” At the Party where Rodge had to pose as Jean the girls could not get their cameras to work taking a picture of Jeanie. Will have to do some searching to find the pages.
Thanks! But one comic only qualifies as “oft-mentioned” in the ironic sense. Which means Robert’s achieved irony! good job. Can’t wait to see him tackle sarcasm.
Madeline, don’t get Jeanie mad at you. She might start remembering what you did to her when she was your brother. I guess now Jeanie is actually your sister.
Interesting development. I wonder what happens if the girls show up at Jean’s house (as mentioned on page 636) and Jeanie meets “her” sister… Madeline promised Mom to take pictures after all (won’t get any, of course). Will that spark nostalgia and Jeanie goes to visit Madeline and comes clean about the whole genie thing? Na… not likely, but it might prove interesting.
After re-reading this a few times, I get the impression that Madeline is or was somewhat of a tyrant to Jean. In the first two panels, Jean is pretty subdued compared to his behavior in other places. Does Madeline dominate Jean much of the time? Does this explain at least some of Jean’s behavior?
Well Jean almost half right. Nice to see some of the characters family’s.
Nah Neil is out of his league.. Both male and female versions really.

Does she have a cell phone? What year is this now?

This should also follow the rule that Genies can’t be photographed here too.

Jean’s sister has been mentioned, but it was exactly once.
con’d —–conned is not a contraction
As it doesn’t even make a diff’rence in speaking, there’s no reason to have short’n’d these words.
It sh’ld have been writ’n as “conned” indeed.

Here’s the comic that a few commenters are referencing.

I was trying to be a little cheeky with the “oft-mentioned” remark, lol
Sister? Oh, brother.
love the look on Neil when Madeline said he was the date
But not quite as good as the look on Natalie’s face when she first realized she was attracted to Rodge.
That attraction was Jeanie messing with Natalie’s hormones… which really may be the only way Jeanie can ensure Natalie has a good time at prom.
Chekov’s Rule (If you show a gun in the first act, you have to fire it in the third.)
Let’s see what part Madeline is going to play in this fiasco. Neil’s date, or maybe dating the guy whose room Jeanie stole?
Madeline, don’t get Jeanie mad at you. She might start remembering what you did to her when she was your brother. I guess now Jeanie is actually your sister.
Why is it that all of the girls in this comic are just super cute-like Madeline and natalie.
Are you complaining?
Nope, I am enjoying myself.
I am a bit jealous though. I only wish I could draw that good.

Poof Neal into Jeanie’s look alike and then try to keep everything separated. Sounds like an old Abbit and Costello skit or maybe mark’s brothers.

Older sibling syndrome.
Well, that explains a bit
Jean’s sister is a bitch and ‘he’ channels her as Jeanie XD
