Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
That explains Guanos comment so how do they keep up with the shame marriage before she finds out they both want out of it? Cause I am pretty sure she really wants to become a grandmother after the last couple of centuries But could you blame her for that I mean Guano is devoted to the Haji and being a life long bachelor.
I think you meant “sham” marriage, but Guano being such a by-the-book guy, I’m pretty sure he feels bound by it unless maybe the Haji invalidates the marriage. Kind of like what Henry VIII was hoping the Pope would do for him, not knowing said Pope was his first wife’s nephew was at that moment at the mercy of her nephew Carlos, King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor, whose army had just taken and sacked Rome.
On the other hand, I’m thinking this may be the beginning of a real twist: Jean and Atty joining forces in defense against the Mother-in-Law-From-Hell (MILFH). Could their alliance lead to something more permanent beyond this present emergency?
Guano probably doesn’t have any choice in the matter because I don’t think it’s a sham. Alya said two genies blessed with a habun jadid will “forever be bound together” to “bring a new genie into the world” That may just be the romantic fantasies of a teenage girl but it certainly reflects a cultural norm. Both Blue and Guano implied the bond would be permanent, and if it indeed unbreakable that certainly puts a more heroic light on Guano’s sacrifice. Of course it’s also possible that there is some form of out clause that isn’t common knowledge, or requires an even greater sacrifice to fulfill — like actually producing the baby mandated by the habun jadid. Just imagine the look on Jean’s face if she learns that getting unhitched requires her to have Guano’s child.
However, we also have strong evidence that genie bonding does not require co-habitation (two of the three genies of Haji’s harem introduced so far reside in the mortal world with human masters) and Alya did said that the “new life” would happen “some day” so I expect that being married to Guano will just become another source of sitcom hijinks, Jeannie will go back to living with Neal and all that will really change is Guano will start calling Jean “wife” instead of “young genie.”
I agree with Pilgrim: this marriage is not just about tradition, it’s magic ritual. There may be no out clause, at least until Jean will have the child (note that we still don’t know if she isn’t already pregnant ; I don’t think sex would be necessary for that).
If there is an “out” from their bonding, it will probably hinge on the fact that it was Blue’s soul, not Jean’s, that participated in the bonding ritual and oath, meaning that Jean and Guano are bound only on the “body” level rather than the “soul” level.
Looking back, I see I screwed up my Henry VIII story. If you’re interested, the story is that Henry VIII wanted a divorce from his wife of about two decades so he could marry his mistress Anne Boelyn. Henry was a faithful, heretic-burning Catholic up until that time, but Popes had been finding ways to get around the “no divorce” thing for centuries, especially for kings. Henry himself was descended from such a non-divorce; a king of France divorced his wife Eleanor, who then married Henry II of England. They had two sons who became kings, Richard I and then John, and Henry VIII was a many-times-great-grandson of John’s son Henry III.
However, the Pope was somewhat reluctant to make Henry’s first wife (Catalina of Aragon) nephew angry, since that nephew was both king of Spain and the Holy Roman Emperor. Carlos I AKA Karl V was already angry enough to have sent an army to Rome, and it was still there, sacking the city, when Henry’s modest request arrived. So the Pope stalled as long as he could, and then said “no.”
And this is why England became Protestant. Henry made himself the head of the Church of England and gave himself a divorce.
Actually, a lot of marriage systems allow a marriage to be anulled if it isn’t consummated (meaning they never have sex) after a certain time. Clearly, neither Guano or Jean are enthusiastic about that part
Actually there are degrees of evil here. When it comes to evil, is definitely number ONE on the list. Anybody else that might be considered evil would be number two or three and such.
Larry Evil are actions and intentions, not an identity. People can’t “be” evil, they can only do evil.
Blue did a lot, but it is impossible to quantify as every act of evil (like murder) is an absolute so two murders are not twice as bad as one, as each one is infinitely bad. (∞*100=∞)
Freedom is a human right … genies with absolute freedom are too dangerous. Im sure Solomon realised this but didn’t banish the genies outright. I have little doubt he could have.
The more strips she is in, the more stereotypical a mother in law she appears. The only thing missing is for her to declare that she will move in with them.
That might still be in the works. Of course, they both have bottles in separate locations so Mom moving in would pose an interesting logistical problem. And there is still the impending little Atty/Jeanie to consider… Mom is going to want to be close to the grandchild and that does not bode well for Neil’s peace of mind.
Why in heck did they not spare everyone a lot of grief and just sicced this woman on the Blue Djinn in the first place? That Vulcan ear grip would have brought him to heel in no time. That or made him give up upon hearing of her release.
Or were they more scared of her being loose, than of him? lol!
This woman is scary but probably not capable of actually killing anyone. The conflict might be entertaining for us but eventually Blue Genie would kill her.
… hmmm … ok, I don’t see any disadvantage in that plan.
Atty, just a heads up for you. There is a sacred unwritten law that says no woman can be held responsible for what she calls her husband while she is in labor. I am pretty sure our Jeanie will have a few choice words for you when the time comes.
Well, Jeanie is definitely being pushed or pulled and generally dragged into the female Genie person hood and motherhood in general and she will never be the same again. When Jean first transformed into the body of Jeanie the outside of her was complete and total, but, the inside of the transformed Jean into Jeanie needed a little bit more time. But, the internal part of Jeanie is coming along very nicely I would say. She is definitely acting, responding and behaving like a girl now and I don’t see much of Jean left in Jeanie except as a memory of who she use to be before she go on with her life as a female Genie. Now there is still plenty of Jean left in Jeanie and it will still cause plenty of trouble in the future too, there may be remembrance of who he use to be and other rewards for some guy named Jean for Jeanie to go to , but, he is basically gone otherwise. So there still plenty of stories that can still be told about Jeanie, but, the story line is beginning to shift as we go along this rout and there many other things that can happen too before we get to the end of the Jeanie Bottle story. There just that much in this story that still hasn’t been told yet.
I’ve always shipped Neil and Jeanie. i hope this teaches her that she is female, and very desirable. And that Neil’s not a bad catch, compared to Guano. If only he’d stop dinking with his little space toys and understand what his real responsibility is: taking care of Jeanie.
Although most of what you say is basically true about Jeanie 50srefugee and it either will or should eventually go there, I don’t see it going there anytime soon and nor do I want to see it going there any time either. This whole story pivots around Jeanie and her antics and the crap she pulling. Once Jeanie start going there, it will be like the TV series of I Dream of Jeannie series after Anthony Nelson and Jeanie got married to each other. The TV series went on for another year, but it was obviously starting to wind down and was heading to the end. The Jeanie Bottle series will also be heading to the end too 50srefugee once it hit that point in this story also. I don’t see CD Rudd going there until he is getting ready to whined up the story and bring it to a close and then I see what your saying will happen then. Your basically are talking about the ending and there still some more story between here that there yet.

This kind of reminds me of a song called: MOTHER-IN-LAW. The one women that is constantly getting into your stuff and causing problem.

‘their lives’, not ‘there lives’. But other than that, LOVING this. Can’t help but feel sorry for them with her around, eh? Heh.^_^
Whoops, haven’t done *that* in a while.
Also, “betrothed” and not “betroved” in the first panel.
AHHHHHHHHHHH….
OK fixed. I really need to always remember to run spellcheck.
I’ve seen evil mother in-laws in my day, but Guano’s mother makes them all Angels by comparison!
I don’t know, Jeanie…
My mother does the same thing whenever I try to say something and that’s without magical powers. lol
I’m starting to think that things were better off with the Blue Djinn in charge….
…And I can’t believe those words came out of my mouth.
This is probably not to end well for Jeanie in the future, especially if she’s this desperate for grandchildren.
Actually there are degrees of evil here. When it comes to evil, is definitely number ONE on the list. Anybody else that might be considered evil would be number two or three and such.

Saves as 588 but says 587 at the top of the strip
Ah, thanks for pointing that out. Looks like CD messed up the numbering in the image. Will fix.

killing a genie is against ‘the rules’
This woman is scary but probably not capable of actually killing anyone. The conflict might be entertaining for us but eventually Blue Genie would kill her.
… hmmm … ok, I don’t see any disadvantage in that plan.
I am not sure I would bet against her. Even against the Blue Djinn.
You know… I’ve shipped characters with less reason than this…
If it turns out to be a little girl they had better name her after grandma.
We still don’t know grandma’s name.
What Jeanie doesn’t know is that embracing is how Genies exchange genetic information

Meeting the future in-laws can be hard.
Even if she’s evil, you can’t go against your doting mother who babies you all the time.
Whoa. Kind of a “Misaki Jurai meets Lord Voldemort” vibe.
WOW. That’s a mental image I never expected to have.
guess the blue jin has nothing on mother here
Except a few dead bodies or was that Genie smoke?
Apologies for this week’s comic being late, folks. Expect it on Thursday, as is our usual fallback for a missed Tuesday release..
I guess she doesn’t know that it was a forced wedding. Or rather not care. She might be evil.
