Chapter: Story 09: I Dream of Technicolor
Characters: Rouyaa
Rouyaa is so pretty in that dress!
Rouyaa is so pretty in that dress!
I’m very impressed that little candle lasted for 4 hours. 🙂
And yes, Rouyaa is rockin’ that dress.
A birthday candle that size should only burn for 14 to 17 min. And “rainbow flame” party candles will only last 8.
Maybe it’s a magic candle?
Ah, yes, I had a problem with one of those once.
Robert, if it were a “magic candle” why would it burn down at all?
It doesn’t have to be a magically invulnerable candle. Just magically durable.
Or maybe, just a possibility mind you, the reason she let panel four even happen is that she ran out of candles to replace the first one with. After all, who buys more than one or two boxes of candles at a time unless you are putting candles on a cake for someone older than 30 y/o.
That shadow looks like Kazom, and I kinda think he isn’t bringing good news.
Also, did she just literally give Andy a piece of her mind? Has she just forgotten her life with Andy? Or has she just forgotten her life as a genie?
The impression I get is that in the sixth panel, she tried to poof to “wherever Andy is”. No poof = either “Andy is nowhere” (unlikely), or “Rouyaa has lost her magic”.
I’d bet on the shadowy figure being Lord Guano, now possessing both a turban and the fancy title, and bearing the message that Rouyaa has been turned into a magic-less human for not abiding by Great Haji’s will.
I think she was planning to teleport to wherever he is.
Also – i don’t think that’s Kazom’s shadow, but i could be wrong.
It look like it could be the back of Jeanie’s head shadow. You know how Jeanie goes bumbling around into stuff in an inopportune time and then she show up kind of moment. If Rouyaa has indeed lost her powers and is now a mare mortal now like the rest of us, then there would now be no conflict in having two Genie’s inhabiting the same lamp now. Because, now Rouyaa has abdicated either willing or unwilling to Haji authority and will and now Jeanie is the proud owner of the totem or the Genie bottle.
We could actually have a short arc or Jeanie trying to give the power back to Roujaa so she can go back to being Jean again. But, of course she going to fail. It could have been Haji power and authority that has been keeping then from meeting each other before this time too.
Yeah – i was thinking of Jeanie, since aren’t Neil and Jeanie wandering around in miniature?
Neil and Jeanie were around back in the late 60s. But this is the 70s now, so I doubt they’re still hanging around.
That’s right. They would have gone back by then. So, now we need to find out why they did show up back then, and what they did.
Oh, boy – I have this sick feeling that something bad happened to Andy. :-[
Oh, wait – she tried to poof to him and it didn’t work – she’s lost her powers!!
Hmm, her powers got revoked right after she teleported back home after granting Andy’s wish that defied Haji’s orders?
This is my guess. Or possibly some time during her 4-hour wait for his return.
Which makes me wonder – given that this is about 1978 – could Andy’s name be “Andy Eden”? That would wrap things up nicely…
Assuming that you mean that this would make her the same elderly “Mrs Eden” who is their neighbor thirty-odd years later, yes.
@ijuin:
You crystallized my thoughts, exactly. 😉
I like the Ms. Eden theory!
That is what I think too. Which would explain a sudden visitor.
But I stand by my words! She is too cute to be punished!
Though, with the way she rocks that dress, maybe a little uhh… discipline for a naughty genie might be ok! Fan art or doujinshi style! But it should be her Master who gets to do it!
Her “punishment” is to become human.
Oh dear, this is not good. What did you do, Rouyaa?
Okay. Either her powers are gone, which is unlikely, because he used his wish, and she isn’t even allowed to disobey it…
OR
She tried to make a “teleport me to where Andy is” spell, and it didn’t work, because he’s dead – his dead body doesn’t count as “Andy” for purposes of teleportation spell if you don’t already know where it is.
Could be that they removed Andy’s memory of her and then depowered her. No memory of her then no reason to go home when you can be working late. The shadow is just the genie showing up to punish her for granting the wish, for sometimes you still get into trouble for things that you were required to do.
I suppose “loss of genie powers” is also somehow related to “granting a wish involving the space program.”
By the way, would one of those tiny birthday candles actually last for four hours? They always seemed to melt a good deal in the short time between lighting and blowing the candles out…
I do notice that they’ve changed the wallpaper to something more palatable. Whew.
Well… she just sealed her fate. She did get a warning stating that she shouldn’t aid the humans in trying to create a rocket to leave earth which the wish would have done. I guess she’s getting punished by kazom now in Hajis place. Poor girl, she just wanted the best for her master she adored and probably didn’t think it all the way through.
She may not have directly aided with the project but did end up supplying the funds to aid it. This may have counted as helping humans leave the planet.
Looks like she is a normal woman now.
Actually, by this point humans have all ready been to the moon. So they already have a rocket to space.
Hajis orders said nothing about travelling to the moon they were “not to aid the humans in any way on their current quest of travel from the planet.” Apparently, the genies want the space program stalled out, and mankind not go any farther then they have.
Andy’s wish was: “I wish we had the money to retrofit Enterprise AND build another shuttle.” Which is breaking Haji’s rule, but really wouldn’t help out much in the long run. All it would mean is that NASA would have 2 shuttles in the early 80s, rather than just 1.
Except in OUR history, Enterprise never got refitted. It was found cheaper to take one of the earlier Structural test prototypes (STA-099) and rebuild it into a working orbiter. Thus the now infamous space shuttle Challenger was born. Enterprise never got refitted, and never saw orbit. The “other shuttle” being discussed would be Columbia, which stated flying in ’81, and reached space in ’82. Challenger started flights in ’83, Discovery in ’84 and Atlantis in ’85. After the ’86 Challenger Disaster, NASA briefly considered refitting and using Enterprise, but instead commissioned a new shuttle built using structural spare parts made during the construction of Discovery and Atlantis. Thus the shuttle Endeavour was born. When Columbia disintegrated in 2003, NASA techs used panels from Enterprise to simulate the foam impact that caused the explosion, to figure out why. All three of the surviving active shuttles were retired in 2011, and the US has been without manned spacecraft since. The Enterprise is now a museum piece in New York, at the Interpid Sea, Air, and Space Museum.
So if CD’s Universe history follows ours, Andy’s wish will never be granted, as the first part will never happen.
Except: Andy’s wish was for the money to be able to do it, not for it to actually happen.
So, NASA suddenly has double or more money in its yearly budget than it did before. Now what happens?
I think that it’s more a matter that Hahi wants humankind to walk the path ourselves without Genie guidance or aid–a sort of Prime Directive thing. Like with the WWII command, Genies apparently are supposed to help individual humans, but not meddle in the course of history.
Of all the things for Haji to get a stick up his genie ass about, the space program seems like a pretty odd one. I can see not wanting to interfere in a major war; that can get a lot of people killed. But why would Haji care about the Space Shuttle? It’s not like we hadn’t already reached the moon; the shuttle seems like pretty small potatoes, comparatively.
My theory is that Genies have a vacation spot on Mars or something similar they don’t mankind to find. But that’s just a theory.
I think that Haji just doesn’t want Genies using their powers to make any world-level changes to the course of human progress. Either he’s afraid that Genies will start guiding humanity to the Genies’ liking rather than leaving humanity free to follow their own path (a sort of global-scale version of “do not mind control a human), or else he is afraid that humanity will become overly dependent on Genies and unable to stand up on their own unaided.
if this is still following IDOJ protocol then this could be Rouyaa’s Evil twin sister
1 problem: her 1/2 sister aka Hitler’s wife, died in WWII. so how can that be Rouyaa’s evil twin sister?
Conceivably she could have BOTH a half-sister and a full twin. The two things aren’t mutually exclusive… not that we actually have any evidence of the latter, though.
According to Shark Hunter which does history searches of World War II and has many member from all sides of the war. Like U-Boat Captain, former German military men along with former American and ect. Hitler and Ava Brown escape to South America and lived there for about thirty or so year, before they finally died.
Now if you believe the main stream media and the history that they put out. Eve Brown and Hitler died in 1945 in a bunker near Berlin.
Magic doesn’t work without her hat?
Naw, she’s done plenty of poofing before without any headgear. Something else is up.
I think we are finding out why the bottle that turned Jean into a Genie was “unoccupied” at the very beginning of this comic series! 🙂
