Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
A junior engineer working for a small engineering firm in Cocoa Beach. The firm focuses mostly on NASA projects.
Neil is Jean’s best friend. When Jean was turned into a genie, Neil became Jeanie’s master.
I wouldn’t assume Nathalie isn’t already under a total teenager spell. Her body language practically screams teenage girl and her emotions are swinging like a pendulum. And while grownup Neil has occasionally been firm he has never been this demanding.
We know Neil works with Nasa and Jean decided to follow Neil to Florida 5 years later and at least 6 to 8 months assuming since the geniefication to Jean the timeline being my hypothesis if Cd or Robert could help calrify the timeline since Jean became a Jeanie would be helpful.
Uh oh. Jeanie defied a direct command from her Master (or Mistress, if you prefer under these circumstances). It’s about time Neil/Natalie put their foot down, but this does not bode well.
Jean is playing rules lawyer on this one, but we’ll see how it plays with the Genie’s weird sense of morality. I’m betting she could talk Lord Guano into accepting it. We still don’t know how she talked her way out of Genie detention.
But are things ever that simple? I don’t see Jean accepting any deal that binds her to Guano as things stood on page 602, and Lahab’s statement about “fixing” their relationship is quite ambiguous. Is it an offer? Was it a threat? Based on their facial expressions I’m betting it was an offer that Jean interpreted as a threat but I could be wrong. Only the author knows. All we know is Jean achieved her freedom due to “craziness” and doesn’t appear concerned about pursuit.
She isn’t really defying anything by now. According to the rules, once the three wishes are granted, serving the Master is entirely up to the Genie in question. The only reason as to why is in their best interest to do so, it’s the treat of Haji day (Or the Master just getting rid of the Totem by any other means).
… I do wonder, with the bottle being empty in the past, right now, does this mean Andy (Rouyaa’s master and current owner of the bottle), is Jeanie’s current master?
No, Rouyaa was degenied in about 1970 or so, which was maybe another 35 year earlier for this date which is in about 2015 or so. Rouyaa or Barbra Eden still had possession of the totem, but, wasn’t the genie of the bottle. The totem or bottle was empty for over 35 or so.
So far, it seems that Jean could NOT mess with the time stream. That the time traveling rules prevents that and that everything they did in past already happened.
I wonder how many timeline changes CD is going to expand on before the end of this arc? Besides the potential to alter the personal life stories of Jean him/herself and Neil, there’s Zoe, Rita, and now Mr. Garcia and the desk clerk at the hotel will be in trouble. But maybe all this has already happened? The “counterfeit” bill seems to be the reason Sartorelli’s closed.
I’d love to see Neal–and for that matter Jeanie herself–playing around and having fun as teen girls. I think Jeanie’s absolutely right about Neal needing to stop being a cheerless geek.
But this is not the way. This is Jeanie assuming total control, and Neal/Natalie becoming her pet.
That said–very tricky bit of rule-lawyering on Jeanie’s part. Since CD’s vision doesn’t wear my plot welding goggles, this could be quiet amusing.
Neil, you’re stuck. Have some fun. At the very least, it’s the best way to start earning a bit of Jeanie’s respect back.
Given the setup–Awesome indeed. I might put “Natalie” in unbolded type, because in my head, I hear Jeanie’s voice as quite natural and unemphatic, assuming obedience.
I used the emphasis to show that she’s making it clear to Neil that he’s definitively a girl, now. Much the same kind of assertiveness as the “assuming obedience” that you mentioned.
I think this is a sore spot for Jeanie because while she can restore Neil to his male self, she can’t do the same for herself. With phenomenal cosmic power, the one thing Jeanie can’t do is become a man again. So I think part of her refusal to grant Neil’s request is not just her asshole character, but also jealousy for Neil: “if I am stuck in this female body for eternity, you can handle a few days.”
Interesting analysis, and probably close to the mark although Jeanie may be reacting this way without conscious thought.
Commander Adams: What is the Id?
Dr. Morbius: [frustrated] Id, id, id, id, id!
[calming down]
Dr. Morbius: It’s a… It’s an obsolete term. I’m afraid once used to describe the elementary basis of the subconscious mind.
Commander Adams: [to himself] Monsters from the id…
Imagine all that power with no control… Great Caesar’s Ghost! Neil had better pull his head out of his butt and take control of his Genie.
It’s clearly not going to be by force or authority; it’s going to take some creative trickery since that seems to be the common trope for dealing with a stronger opponent. At least, if Jeanie ends up screwing up too much with her tricks here with her past self, maybe it’ll lead to some emotional growth for herself. Might be just a pipe dream, but who knows.
@Jenny
” if Jeanie ends up screwing up too much with her tricks here with her past self, maybe it’ll lead to some emotional growth for herself.”
Or perhaps emotional growth for her younger self, such that they ended up not fantasising about Barbara Eden when they open the bottle.
While I don’t agree with Jeanie’s attitude for completely disregarding Neil’s worries and “his” solid reasons for being concern for polluting the timeline, it may be best to stay as Natalie for now. Even a 5-year difference of age between past and present Neil wouldn’t make them too incomparable; they would get easily noticeable as the same person, thus time paradox. At least with Jean/Jeanie, there’s both a gender and species swap that makes them different enough for others to not notice. Especially since they’ll likely go together to this prom.
I’m going to get yelled at for this but what the hay. It has been said that in a argument men will use facts and logic and women will use emotion. That is why a man will never win an argument with a woman. A classic example was the Kennedy/Nixon debate. Nixon argued facts, JFK used female logic and argued emotion. “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Jeanie has never used logic, at least not until panel 5. Neal, If you want to win you have to argue like a girl.
Glad to see Neil standing up for himself. But, putting myself in Neil’s place this could could be a friendship ending turn of events. Friends don’t treat friends like this, it’s just wrong on so many different levels. Neil has never, that I recall, abused his ‘Master’ authority. But when this story arc is over and they’re back home in the present, I can envision a really pissed off Neil gripping the bottle in a fist glaring at Jeanie saying “This time you’ve gone too far.” Jeanie replies with an “Eep”. Anyway that’s just my two cents worth of opinion, NOT criticism because I’ve enjoyed every page since the beginning. Heheheh, too bad this isn’t an R rated strip ‘cause I could see Neil getting his revenge by doing Jeannie doggy style while saying “Who’s the Master” on every stroke. Of course Neil would never do such a thing, but Jeanie having a dream sequence …
Neil used up his three wishes very early on, and hasn’t actually had an enforced Master/Slave relationship with Jeanie for quite some time. The Information page linked at the top of the site has details as to why.
Page 4, apartment key; Page 6-7, Genie Instruction Manual; Page 76, ham sandwich. Important statement on page 78, though. Guano: “Very well. You may serve this Master for the remainder of his days.” Sounds pretty explicit to me, and Jeanie is probably in violation of that directive.
Hmmm. Possible. There may be a retcon happening, there. Or maybe Guano was just using “genie speak” to say “You can stay out of your bottle until he dies”. My understanding is that she’d be locked back up in her bottle until someone else comes along and finds it, if she doesn’t decide to stay with Neil.
I’m basing that presumption on the fact that Alya was allowed to stay out of her bottle only on the technicality that her master never made his third wish before dying.
The key phrase there may be “never made his third wish” which may trump the back into the bottle rule. And, to add a twist to her situation, if Neil rejects her on the next Haji’s Day (a very real threat if she pisses him off too often) she might not go back into her bottle… after all, as Guano’s wife she’s de facto a member of his harem (Info Page: “Genies who are sent away by their master no longer have a master to serve, thus becoming either Entrapped Genies or a part of Haji’s Harem.”) and Guano is Haji’s heir apparent.
@Mega: It would seem so. Of course, Neil may not be savvy enough to realize that this will not work over the long term, not to mention the other possible ramifications of this time travel trick. For example, what would happen if Jeanie went back to just before finding her bottle and somehow arranged for someone else to open it? Perhaps the “flow of space and time” clause would prevent it, though.
Yes, I am in agreement with Robert here. Jeanie is really good at throwing stuff out there that isn’t so, so that she can do things the way she want to do things. It a Jeanie trait.
This transformation of Jean into Jeanie has to be seen on several level to fully appreciate what is happening to Jeanie when it come to her transformation from a guy to a girl genie.
The physical side of transformation of Jean into Jeanie was 100% and total too and non reversible also.
But, internal side of the transformation of Jean into Jeanie or the female genie side of her was also 100% there too, got everything that she need to be a female genie, but, probably only about 5% activation to operating as female genie. About 95% Jeanie operating the way Jean the mortal man thinks and not the way a female genie thinks. After about a year of being female genie, Jeanie is thinking like a female genie about 90% or so instead of thinking like the mortal man that she use to be, but, she still has some of his memories and some fondness of having been him, which about to change when Jean try’s to do his number on her and she has to defend herself from him. Jeanie still has some strongholds that she is defending against like Neil being her Master and such, but, the transformation is pretty much complete now to her being a female genie.
What @50srefugee said about men usually try to use logic and women usually go on emotion is true, but, that not the only thing that different between men and women either and I would like to mention some of the other things that are different between us and the way think other than just of physical differences too like.
1. We men tend to be eye people and women tend to be feeler. Men get sexually aroused when they see a pretty women and women get sexually aroused when they get a misage on there bodies.
2. We have already seen this one of women like to shop for cloth more than most men do and travel packs too.
3. Unfortunately some guys like to treat women like there a piece of meat to be eaten and the women don’t like that and they should not like that. However some women like to taunt the guys with there bodies, because, they know we are eye people and that will turn us on and we don’t like that either and should not like it too.
Most people here have finally agreed that Jeanie is starting to act like a girl and not a guy, which is fine, but, Jeanie in the process of experiencing something else that girls seem to like too. Like Misages, sonna bath, perfume and other such things as that. Jeanie is going to get even more girlie after this event.
It already been established that Genie can time travel. What Jeanie is trying to do is to bend those rules a bit, but, yes, Neil is still technically Jeanie Master. We all know how Jeanie like to bend the rule of Geniedom. That all we are seeing here. But, Jeanie should remember what happens when Genie bend those rules too much, Haji has a tendency to degeniefy those genies.
Robert has two avatars one male and one female. Usually he throw out the male avatar, but, some times he throw out the female avatars and then some times he chooses to inter change throwing them out too. At any rate, that what I understand is going one here.
Sorry, the second Robert in the comment is also me. I left a comment the old fashioned way, rather than logging into the site as my “Intern” account, which gave it my old icon.
Well Jean is right so Neil/Natalie just have fun before Jean makes you a little kid or anctual teenager with a mind change again.
I wouldn’t assume Nathalie isn’t already under a total teenager spell. Her body language practically screams teenage girl and her emotions are swinging like a pendulum. And while grownup Neil has occasionally been firm he has never been this demanding.
So, this more or less confirms that it was no more than one year between when Jean and Neil graduated college and when they moved to Cocoa Beach.
Five years?
Okay, confirmed that Jeannie and Neil live in webcomic time.
Why did I hear” But Mom!!!??” after reading this weeks Jeanie Bottle.
Hahahaha!
Uh oh. Jeanie defied a direct command from her Master (or Mistress, if you prefer under these circumstances). It’s about time Neil/Natalie put their foot down, but this does not bode well.

Jeanie agreed to whatever Lahab offered (page 602), and Lahab currently has great authority within the Genie hierarchy.

This is, now, becoming an interesting thread!
Could be worse Jean could mess with the time stream and make you go to the prom with Rodge and start his Natalie love early.
So far, it seems that Jean could NOT mess with the time stream. That the time traveling rules prevents that and that everything they did in past already happened.
Dunno – their favourite diner went out of business … brcause of copunterfeit money … which was the money Jean bought their burgers with…
It has “will have going to have happened” happened, but it hasn’t actually “happened” happened yet, actually.
And Mr. Garcia will have a hard time explaining why he charged two prom gowns on the company credit card.
Heh. Maybe he’ll wind up being investigated for paying for sex with a 17-year-old girl.
Neil is about to throw a teenage tantrum
See if you can get Jean in a half-Nelson, Neil. Make Jean tap out. Make sure you do it with the elevator doors open so we can see it.
Why not a Major Nelson?
I wonder how many timeline changes CD is going to expand on before the end of this arc? Besides the potential to alter the personal life stories of Jean him/herself and Neil, there’s Zoe, Rita, and now Mr. Garcia and the desk clerk at the hotel will be in trouble. Probably would have been more dramatic if in the last panel Jeanie had said “Get in the elevator, Natalie.”
That would have been great!
EDIT: So I decided to make it happen!
Awesome.
Given the setup–Awesome indeed. I might put “Natalie” in unbolded type, because in my head, I hear Jeanie’s voice as quite natural and unemphatic, assuming obedience.

Is it too late to say WOW! about the Jeanie-Bikini header?!
Nope
I second that wow
Another header Wow!

Eh mordecai and Rigby’s friendships survived worse … though i consider it one of the greatest mysteries…
You should join the Discord server that that’s linked in the sidebar. There may or may not be fanart of something rather similar to that…
way to burn Neil with Linear logic
Is Neil not still the master? One way to find out. “I wish…”
Didn’t he already burned his wishes?
Neil used up his three wishes very early on, and hasn’t actually had an enforced Master/Slave relationship with Jeanie for quite some time. The Information page linked at the top of the site has details as to why.

doesn’t this mean any genie can use this loophole? or most can’t timetravel?
@Mega: It would seem so. Of course, Neil may not be savvy enough to realize that this will not work over the long term, not to mention the other possible ramifications of this time travel trick. For example, what would happen if Jeanie went back to just before finding her bottle and somehow arranged for someone else to open it? I’m not convinced that Jeanie’s actually right about this being a loophole at all.

I think Neil should remain as Natalie, enter into a romantic relationship with Jean and end up sharing Jean’s bottle as a new genie.
I get the feeling that Hachimitsu, the guest artist who made that awesome Genie Anderson comic during CD Rudd’s hiatus a few years ago, would agree. 🙂
Jean’s lucky his powers still work since by his rules they are before the genification happened
Good point. And since her powers still work she must still be subject to the Master/Genie rule book.
It already been established that Genie can time travel. What Jeanie is trying to do is to bend those rules a bit, but, yes, Neil is still technically Jeanie Master. We all know how Jeanie like to bend the rule of Geniedom. That all we are seeing here. Jeanne is not completely wrong here … depending on how time travel works relative to the bottle.
They did not bring the bottle with them…
A genie must have a totem to exist … therefore Jeanne must be connected to the present token..
Therefore… are 2 genies sharing the same totem at this point and by implication…
… the same master?
careful pal, you’ll blow some neurons.
in the description, which Robert are you talking about? cause there are 2 Roberts in the comments. also, the next page is gonna be late, isn’t it?
Next comic will be posted this Thrusday. Didn’t have time to get it done for Tuesday.
oh. did you get what i said about the 2 Roberts and the Robert in your description?
I assume Robert the moderator not Robert the commenter.
Robert has two avatars one male and one female. Usually he throw out the male avatar, but, some times he throw out the female avatars and then some times he chooses to inter change throwing them out too. At any rate, that what I understand is going one here.

Your female avatar is really cute.
I agree… Roberta should moderate more often.
See, I told you it was the same Robert, it was just a different avatar is all. I remembered him using that female avatar a while back too.
