Ah Lahab has a third form now or is this a mix of the two she is very powerful. Maybe she would take Jean as an apprentice? 2 more to go for 600 cant wait for this mile stone of my favorite webcomic.
I am going to go with this being either Lahab new apprentice or Lahab needing some other thing from Jeanie, because, with what Blue Djinn has done to Jeanie body, Jeanie is now one of the more powerful Genie around and/or Lahab knows that Jeanie use to be a man and is trying to develop a working relationship with Jeanie for either the current situation for to prevent future problem. Lahab is kind like the old sage that just about seen it all and know it all, but, works primarily in the back ground.
Also Lahab probably hasn’t shown this side of herself to most of the other Genie beside Kazon.
In all of Genie history, Jean cannot be the first male to open an empty totem and Lahab certainly knows Genie history. I doubt Jeanie having been male before becoming female makes one bit of difference to Lahab in the greater scheme of things. Keeping Jeanie’s wild magic under control is probably utmost on her mind, that and she probably understands something of what Jean/Jeanie is going through. Transformation, possession by an evil djinn, bonding and pregnancy (although THAT may not have sunk in yet), accused of and atoning for things she didn’t do… you’ll note the plaintive way she asked about being in more trouble? Our girl is messed up, and Lahab just might also be the most compassionate of all the genie hierarchy we’ve seen so far.
I’m glad someone brought up JB 600 being imminent. I was tempted to say it in the post description, but then Th3go’s made that awesome fanart, which had to take center stage.

Lahab flat-out told Kazom that many Silat (majority) genies would not accept a Jann genie as Haji’s first. I imagine she knows what it’s like to face discrimination as a minority who passes by hiding her true self, though experiencing discrimination does not automatically make you sympathetic to others.
As for Jean not being the only male to open an empty token, the comic has made it quite clear that Jeans’ gender bender was caused or at least guided by his own expectations and might not be due to anything inherent in the totem. Someone else might have remained male. The comic may have hinted that bottle genies are always female, other people with better memories might know where, but that could be a presumption based on the audience’s “I Dream of Jeannie” influenced expectations.
I don’t remember where, but in one of the early strips it was stated, that thanks to Aladin (the film) they now have a lot of genies walking around that looks blue.
Because the rule are, that when an empty totem is found, the person takes on the appearance that he or she thinks a genie is supposed to look like, which creates a pretty big chance that any of these types of genies end up as the opposite gender, regardless of whether they were male or female to begin with, because that have nothing to do with what they expect a genie to be.

Now, the vital question is, will Lahab explain what the heck is really going on with the Mars orbiter?
Or, at the very least, listen to Jeanie, as Neil has finally started “listening” to the Orbiter? I believe a great deal of Jeanie’s resentment will fade once she understands that someone with authority knows what the heck is really going on with her. It may not change her situation, anymore than Neil can change the Orbiter’s situation millions of miles away over a feeble radio link, but at least she can start dealing rationally with her situation, changing what she can, accepting what she must.
I am thinking that Lahab is trying to develop a working relationship with Jeanie by trying to befriend her. It kind of like the “Good Cop, Bad Cop” scenario. Jeanie has already been introduces to the Bad Cop and now Lahab is going to introduce Jeanie to the Good Cop, her.

Guano and his mother seemed to think so. In JB421 she appeared as a flaming redheaded Jann (her natural form), but maybe she assumed this form to be less intimidating and more relatable.

Not quite. Kazom explained to Jeanie in the Melvin arc that experienced genies can change their form at will. But Jeannie can’t turn back into Jean because she hasn’t got the proper level of control over her powers, yet.
Of course, with the massive power boost that the Blue Djinn’s machinations ended up giving her, she now has lot of power but NOT much control. Which is hardly a good thing…
I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a major topic that Lahab brings up, here.

Is Lahab trying to look like Jeanie, Honey or Ethan/Hon3y?
I think what she’s trying to do is convince Jeanie that she’s a lot more powerful and “in the prime of her life” than her elderly default form would suggest. But she didn’t want to go full “Jann”, with the flaming body, for obvious reasons. So she chose a youthful body that Jeannie will find familiar.

So, is this Lahab or someone else? If it’s someone else is she acting on Lahab’s behalf? If it is Lahab it looks like she’s ditched her cool old lady persona for a “just between us girls” approach while keeping her true form a secret. Her conversation with Kazom implied that very few genies –possibly only Kazom and Haji–know she’s a Jann. Either way it looks like she’s set up to give Jeanie some hard facts of life genie-style in the gentlest way possible. Lahab may be the brains behind the throne but it’s starting to look like she’s definitely the heart.

Oh you put that in much better words than I did in my above comment. Yeah, this is my exact theory on what’s happening, here.
Hmm, brains behind the throne. If Guano becomes the successor to Haji, then that implies that Jean will be the successor to Lahab’s role. Perhaps this conversation is regarding that issue–Lahab laying out what is expected of Jean in that role.
I suppose it depends on what’s in the barrels.
Likely booze of one sort or another. Sure, genies can materialize any non-magical item that they can imagine, but they have to be able to imagine it–you can’t duplicate a wine you have never seen or tasted a sample of, for example; it would not taste and smell the same. Thus, there is cause to have some “original” stuff around, especially if it’s the premium stuff for Haji’s Court.
I remember somebody saying something about adolescent males should be “raised in a barrel and fed through the bunghole.” Genies could do something like that—probably need to.
Maybe, but boys raised that way will not gain any emotional maturity–they need to be out where they can learn the consequences of their screw-ups before they can ever learn to NOT screw up.

Those barrels in the background look a lot like the barrels used to age Bucktooth Willie’s White Lightning. Charing the barrels will change the shine into bourbon. A flaming genie that close would be explosive.
Let hope they didn’t get that white lightning or Moon shine from Bucktooth Willie or we could have a lot of sick Genie’s on our hands.

Jeannie’s probably most amazed at Lahab’s ability to remove her hat.
Is it me or has the pacing slowed to a crawl? We’ve had 3 strips dedicated to Neil discovering gravity, and another 3 dedicated to Guano’s mom. Don’t cram in every joke possible at the expense of the story.
