Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
A junior engineer working for a small engineering firm in Cocoa Beach. The firm focuses mostly on NASA projects.
Neil is Jean’s best friend. When Jean was turned into a genie, Neil became Jeanie’s master.
Ah shoot, I attached this page to the wrong story. I’m used to scrolling to the bottom of the Story listing and choosing the last one. But now that we’re at Story 10, it unfortunately sorts it right after Story 1. Gonna have to get used to that.
Actually, it’s not a problem. Jean can also be a girl’s name. As a matter of fact, it’s actually more commonly used in the US as a female name, than as a male name. Only in Europe do you find lots of male Jeans. In the US, “Gene” is the more common male spelling.
So yeah, she could show up as a woman, and accept the award. But I doubt that that would occur to her, and it’s even less likely that she’d want to go along with it.
What I meant was that the award-givers would certainly know that Jean is a man. They would have definitely consulted her employer prior to granter her this award, and her employer thinks she’s still a man.
There are so many ways this can go horribly wrong. For instance:
* Suddenly Rodge has to take Caley again.
* Belle mistakes Rodge for Jean
* Rodge gets arrested for (pick your reason)
* Rodge screws up the awards ceremony so much he gets Jean fired
* Rodge actually hooks up with a woman who falls in love with “Jean”
* Jean’s spell is so powerful Rodge actually thinks he’s Jean
* Jean gets bottled up again and Rodge is stuck in Jean form
That’s kind of what I was thinking as well. She can claim she has ‘transitioned’ since the article was published she is getting the award for writing, which is probably true. It just wasn’t by choice.
I don’t see Jean of Jeanie trying to pass himself or herself off as a traniy. It just not going to happen. So Jeanie stuck with either Neil or Rodger as her genning pig and then almost anything could happen after that. That what I am expecting.
I suspect there is still part of Jeanie that thinks there might be a way to reverse this and go back to being a guy. Having his “real” identity of Jean come out as a girl would shut the door on that. I think that is why he is trying to keep the boy Jean identity alive.
Jeanie is certainly identifying more and more as a girl, but I don’t think s/he has quite crossed the line yet. Maybe Jeanie just needs a night in a hotel room with in NYC with Rodger to make her a real woman.
Kidding. I really don’t see things going well for Rodger if he decides to make a move. We all know she really loves Neil. Even as a boy, she moved all the way from Ohio for him.
Yeah. “Tranny” is really kind of insulting to automatic transmissions. Although the manual ones seem to like it. I guess they’re kind of clutching at straws. 😉
Hey, wait a minute. I just remembered that genies aren’t allowed to have any personal possessions, does that mean Jeanie won’t be allowed to keep the award?
I think there is a distinction between “possessions” as in “things that you keep around and use” vs. “legal property”, as in “something that you have a defensible ownership right to that supersedes anybody else’s claims in court”. Genies apparently can’t have the latter based on their technically-a-slave status.
Jean girl friend Belle live in Coca Beach where Jean lives. But, Even if Belle doesn’t live in New York, she probably knows that Jean will probably go to New York for the award or some one she think is Jean that will show up anyway. So we know that Belle going to be showing up to see Jean. What ever else is going to happen, I don’t know, but, that will happen.
We know that Belle Lows is going to college in Cocoa Beach or somewhere near it, but that doesn’t mean she’s lived there all her life. After all, Neil and Jean are from Cincinnati. Belle could be from New York, and she could have gone home for the holidays–remember football on the tube?
Or Belle could have heard about Jean getting an award and decides to surprise him. Or Belle could have heard that Jean got the award and wonders why he hasn’t told her he was coming back to accept it, and decides to have “a talk” with him.
BTW, there’s no evidence that Rodge has ever met Belle before, or even knows Jean has a girlfriend named “Belle.” Wonderful potential for classical Rodge missteps in that.
Actually Jean coming out as a woman is the most sensible idea, but given the title and given that Jean is Jean whatever sex he/she happens to be, I don’t see that happening soon. Actually, since he’s been working through mail and internet, it’s quite possible no one outside Neil, Rodge, Neil’s so-far-unseen family, and Belle know that Jean was a guy. That is, the people presenting the award don’t know that Jean Isn’t a chick. Ever heard of George Elliot?
I am surprised Jean hasn’t tried to use an illusion to appear and sound how he used to. It may not fool anyone that bumps into her but it would be a temporary fix until she can figure out how to change back for good.
That’s some real quick thinking by Neil in Panel 4. And I like his expression. For once, Rodge get to be the one behind the 8 ball. This should be fun! (rubbing hands together)
I do love it when this comic references that Jeanie was at one point Jean. Question, how do they refer to themselves? That’s the poll, but I don’t know because Jeanie may stikk identify as a male!
Well Jean first became a Female Genie, he considered himself a male in a female Genie body. He or she has made several attempt to get out of being a female or at least be a male genie instead of a female genie. But, that been over six months or longer now. Although Jean can be either a Guys or Girls name, over here most people consider it primarily girls name, because, I have run into a Jean or should I say it was spelled Gene and same pronunciation. If you ask the question does he consider dude, he would probably say, Yes he does. Would he go back to being a guy if he could, he would say right away.
The thing about the name change is that it and everything else happening to him/her is gradually changing his view of himself as he see it into a her view of herself as she see it. Just the very business of accepting calling himself/herself Jeanie instead of Jean or letting other people call you Jeanie he or she doesn’t recognize that he or she is accepting her womanhood.
Think about it, every time he was a guy, he looked into a mirror he sees a light brown haired screw cut flat chested guy looking back at him that he called Jean.
Now she look into a mirror and she sees girl with long blond hair and really big tits and she called Jeanie and is beginning to think of it being herself instead of himself and mentally every time she sees herself she says to herself, that Jeanie and not Jean or he some guy I use to be. In a previous arc, looked at herself in Jeanie body, but, with not tits on her, she was flat chested and she got real upset about it, Because, Jeanie suppose to have C or D bust. We guys like bust on females, but, we don’t want one on us. Which means that Jeanie is gradually accepting her womanhood whether willing or not. Jeanie isn’t quit as upset with being a women as she use to be. It not quit as urgent as it use to be to change back into a guy, etc. She more accepting to the idea of acting more like a women. It a very slow process, but, Jean is acting Jeanie every day.
She is increasing accepting the mannerism, behavior of a women and is even starting to adorn herself more the way a women does than a man does and even wearing dress and such.
What I am trying to say is. There is no right answer right now. When he first changed, definitely a Guy. Right, now, it neither one or a combination of both or at least it all mexst up right now and he or she, doesn’t know who they are right now. In the future, definitely a girl in her future view of herself.

Rodge’s line in the last panel.. so funny.
“LOOING LIKE THIS”
looks like when somebody poofed in they forgot a couple of ribs
and the letter “k”.
D’oh! I fixed a different typo in that same bubble, which distracted me from this one. I’ll fix it now.
Snub the committee? It’ll add to “his” mystique.
wait. I thought the I Dream of Technicolor storyline was over.
Same here.
Ah shoot, I attached this page to the wrong story. I’m used to scrolling to the bottom of the Story listing and choosing the last one. But now that we’re at Story 10, it unfortunately sorts it right after Story 1. Gonna have to get used to that.
If everyone and anyone is so apathetic to her appearance, why can’t she accept the award blond and with a chest size?
Have the people giving Jean the award even seen him in person?
Jean has been granted an award, not Jeannie. She can’t accept the award without being Jean, and she obviously wants it.
She can just say that Jean is short for Jeannie.
Actually, it’s not a problem. Jean can also be a girl’s name. As a matter of fact, it’s actually more commonly used in the US as a female name, than as a male name. Only in Europe do you find lots of male Jeans. In the US, “Gene” is the more common male spelling.

why just claim she is transgender.
I’m kinda hoping Belle shows up too.
Thank you for volunteering.

* Jean’s spell is so powerful Rodge actually thinks he’s Jean
* Jean gets bottled up again and Rodge is stuck in Jean form
The one I’m hoping for is:
* Jean casts the wrong spell on Rodge, and we finally get to meet “Rodgette”.
Oh, you mean Jeanie twin Sister. That could be interesting.
Yes, Rodge is overdue for getting transformed.
Also, Rodge basks in the glory of the award, making Jeanie insanely jealous.
Well, she could just go, and, for lack of better words, come out as a girl.
That’s kind of what I was thinking as well. She can claim she has ‘transitioned’ since the article was published she is getting the award for writing, which is probably true. It just wasn’t by choice.
That’s actually a really good idea! Which of course means that Jean would never do it.
I don’t see Jean of Jeanie trying to pass himself or herself off as a traniy. It just not going to happen. So Jeanie stuck with either Neil or Rodger as her genning pig and then almost anything could happen after that. That what I am expecting.
Hey, could you not use the word Tranny to refer to someone who’s Transgender? It’s a terrible slur when used in that context.
I suspect there is still part of Jeanie that thinks there might be a way to reverse this and go back to being a guy. Having his “real” identity of Jean come out as a girl would shut the door on that. I think that is why he is trying to keep the boy Jean identity alive.

Is that in the Genie rules on the Information page? If not, it may not be true in the IDoJB universe.
Check comic number 67, top of panel 1.

“Jean, Jean, you’re young and alive….”
If the award committee has never met Jean, I see no reason why Jeanie can’t accept the award he earned.
Here’s hoping it’s not a major award, though. I don’t think a fishnet leg lamp would go with the bottle’s decor.
I wonder if Belle Lows is in New York.

She has already tried that and it had unfavorable results.

It just wont work even at a distance, She has a rack that just won’t quit and that figure, well forget it.
Those were transformation attempts not illusion attempts. I still think an illusion and not a transformation may work.
That’s some real quick thinking by Neil in Panel 4. And I like his expression. For once, Rodge get to be the one behind the 8 ball. This should be fun! (rubbing hands together)
Plus, Rodge would probably make for a better Jean stand-in than Neil would. He’s much more into dating girls than Neil is.
I do love it when this comic references that Jeanie was at one point Jean. Question, how do they refer to themselves? That’s the poll, but I don’t know because Jeanie may stikk identify as a male!
If Jean still considers himself a dude, then it’s probably best to call him He. Or whatever he’s comfortable with.
When in doubt, ask. It never hurts. 😉

Okay, I’ve gotta say it, those shades are AMAZING.
Neil keeps his ocular safety in very high regard.
He could get a spash of solder, in his eye. Painful, and it could be blinding. 3+ years as a professional solderer.
Best drawn strip to date, I think IMO
This is one of the first that CD has done on his new 27″ drawing tablet. So I’m not surprised you noticed a bump in quality.
Seems it was worth the investment, looking good so far.

You know, I think I see a loophole here. Jeannie may not be able to change herself back to her own male form, but maybe she can make herself look like a totally different male. Like, say – Neal. Or some other random male. Or even a totally fictitious appearance.
Now that might not work around Cocoa Beach, but in New York, where no one knows what Jean looks like anyway, if some guy shows up and claims the award, then hey – who can say that it’s not what “Jean” normally looks like? Hell, Jean could even ‘poof’ herself up some fake ID to prove it. Problem solved.
I would imagine that she’s already tried that. Otherwise, she’d go around all day in a male form, and be less embarrassed about being stuck as a woman.
Hm. Robert, I think that you have a distinctly higher opinion of Jeannie’s level of creativity than I. 😉
Seriously, I can’t ever recall her changing herself into anyone or anything else, can you? Her clothes; yes, hair; yes, various other items; yes, but we’ve never seen her as anything but herself, that I’m aware of. She’s changed Neil into other critters and people, but not herself. So maybe it just hasn’t occurred to her yet. After all, most people don’t spend much time thinking about how they’d rather be someone else. Especially someone as self-centered as Jean is.
Another thing that could go wrong: Someone from Jean’s family could show up for the award ceremony. We know Jean has a sister.
Ooooh – I do LIKE that idea! Good one, Tom!
Keep up the great comic, looking forward t see how the story progresses.
