Chapter: Story 03: I Dream of a Nerd
Well, reading the posts on the last comic, some of you saw this coming… Also the poll I had going for the past few weeks was probably also a clue.
Here we have the first speaking cameo of ‘I Dream of a Jeanie Bottle’ and the honor goes to Grace from El Goonish Shive by Dan Shive.
Granted, Grace doesn’t exactly look like a mutant-squirrel-alien-super-powered character… But there are very few characters who can fit that description.

Nevertheless, Jeanie got her point across spectacularly well, and should have clued the nerds in as to exactly who and what they have in their midst. With any luck, that will make them…cautious.
Now, what’s Melvin’s problem?

Also, I like the way this comic scales our boys, and confirms someone’s earlier comment that Jeanie has apparently scaled herself to fit in. Well done.
…Although some might not have caught that implication, and just assumed Grace was 7 feet tall, for some odd reason.
(On the other hand, considering the hijinks they get up to over at EGS, she may have just been enlarging herself for some random reason).
It would have been clearer if she’d been in her default (half-squirrel) form, and even clearer than that in her lespuko form, but she uses the latter so rarely that it would have been unlikely for her to be in it at a random time. (I assume both of these are harder to draw.)
OMG.
I didn’t realize Grace really is half-squirrel. Can you point to a relevant strip or two?

Grace’s absolute first appearance is here, but she doesn’t actually enter the continuity for another five strips.
El Goonish Shive is a classic example of style evolution – you may actually find it hard to believe that the guy who did those early strips is the same as the guy who did this strip…

Considering the options available in the new poll I would hazard a guess that the person Melvin has a crush on is his teacher.
The more I think on this, the more I think Melvin’s crushing on a teacher. I can’t explain why, though.
The closest I can get is that a fellow student would be too attainable. Deep inside, he knows he could approach a student, but he’d get shot down.
A teacher, on the other hand, is so far beyond his reach he doesn’t have to worry about even trying.
Also, I think the older lover thing is powerful for both boys and girls. Someone hot who actually knows what to do!
