Jeanie Bottle 488
Holy crap that’s dark…
Any Chinese readers happen to know what is being said on the majority of page? CD wrote the lines in English, then ran them through a translation service. But he did that weeks ago, and has since forgotten what the characters are saying. lol
Thats putting it mildly…
Its seems the blue djinn is fully in control now, I guess that means the Jeannie we all knew is either long gone or subconsciously buried.
Either way, this is not going to end well for anyone.
I think, given we’ve yet to see the time travel arc, that Jean still exists in there.
Besides, I’d expect Big Bad Blue to leave Jean alive for now; the jerk is his perfect disguise, and he still needs to be able to get out. He might not be able to if he were the body’s sole animating force.
Holy… I did not expect to go from Guano calling Santa an idiot to this, things are escalating quickly, also, now that the cat is out of the bag it may be time to have a Blue tag for the blue eyes Jeanie?
I asked CD about that, but he didn’t get back to me. Not sure what direction he wants to go with that.
Using a translator myself:
1: I think, I lost her
2: Not good
3: No
4: Don’t worry
Thanks. You seem to at least have some idea of how to transliterate illustrations of Chinese characters to text. That’s more than I can do!
The Google Translate phone app, at least, has a feature that can translate from the phone’s camera and other photos. Probably can be done on a PC, too.
Oh cool, I didn’t know that!
I know Chinese… And that’s actually pretty much on the spot. The comic used some weird synonyms (e.g. “lost” in the first sentence literally means “misplaced” rather than “evaded”; and 3’s “no” is more similar to “did not” or “nothing” (depending on context) than the “oh no!” that the character meant.
In general though the Chinese is good enough to get the point across without bring completely wrong
Sounds like exactly what you’d get from putting colloquial English through a translation service. So, no surprise there. 🙂
I work with several native Chinese people. The translations are “I am losing people”, Next “Not Good!”, smash, “Noooo!” last one “Don’t Worry” She must be a Genie Lord and losing her subordinates.
guess bottles are more important than one might think (instead of just prisons) – and some genies are “lucky” enough to be separated from their bottles
According to the information page, the totem of a genie may as well be there power or live source, and without it they consume there own magic trying to maintain themselfs until they slowly die, so if we speak about a “lucky” fate, I would guess for being turn into a mortal like Rouya is as lucky as it gets.
In Disney’s sequel to its Aladdin film, we got to see what happens when a certain black lamp got melted. Looks like Blue can absorb others’ magic upon their deaths, making him a manavore (it’s my coined term for a magic eater).
This is just speculation, but I don’t think absorving a genie is the same as killing it, after all, we did “see” Blue killing a genie before and it’s kid of bloody, and if it was that easy I suppose that destroying Blue’s totem would have solved that problem before, maybe destroying the totem reduce them to this pure magic form that is either easy to seal or absorb, that may even go well with the current assumtion that Blue lacks a propper body for now.
We know that once a Genie magic been used up, they die. So absorbing all of another Genie magic would defiantly kill them. But, technically the Blue isn’t eating or absorbing the Genie themselves. It the having Zero amount of magic that actually kill that Genie.
I had seen in Disney Junior’s Jake and the Never Land Pirates, an evil genie named Dread goes around stealing other genies’ magic by sucking them into his own bottle, draining their magic into himself as long as he possess his bottle.
Blue probably doesn’t have a totem anymore, if he did at all which is maybe why he doesn’t do it here.
Holy shit! This is getting dark…
That remove one question as to if the Blue Djinn is evil or not. He is definitely evil.
The whole crazy rant about killing all the genie leadership wasn’t enough? 🙂
Who hasn’t ranted about murdering their leaders at some point? If I got magic powers then there would suddenly be a great many vacant political offices, and also the manager at work who forbade having a cactus on our desk because it looked untidy. And I’m not a mad megalomaniac, ahahahahahaha!!!
Actually until now we had not seen enough of Genie society to know for certain who was telling us the real truth of the situation. We were given the Blue Djinn’s version and Haji’s version but without any actual evidence supporting either side, just their words. The only real thing we got to see was the way Jehane was “tried and convicted” almost instantly for something that she didn’t do which IMO spoke against Hadj’s form of rule. As they say, the victors write the history books.
Now we have real proof that the Blue Djinn is truly evil, not that that proves Haji is actually good. We haven’t seen enough of Haji to truly understand his alignment.
Also I believe that Jeanie has stepped over into territory that will be VERY hard, if not impossible, to forgive, especially by Haji and the genie lords, or even Neil. We know she made a choice to work with the BD in comic 483 even though she wasn’t given the full truth of the matter and is clearly being used. Jeanie better hope that the Blue Djinn wins in the end, because I have the feeling that even if Haji was to learn the real truth of how she was deceived, he won’t care one iota and she would be doomed. The only way out for her that I see at this point is if she manages to realize the extant of the BD’s evil and is somehow able to stop him herself in front of lots of witnesses, but I don’t think she has enough power, skill, and knowledge to pull that off, at least at this time.
Again referencing comic 483, I think the Blue Djinn lied regarding the wording of “I’ll show you more powerful magic.” Many people would assume that such a statement implies that by being shown greater magic, that they would then be able to learn and use such magic. But comic 445 tells us that Jeanie is limited in her magic and will never have magic as potent as a genie-born genie. The fact Jeanie has agreed to all of this with the Blue Djinn further reinforces my thought that Jeanie maybe succumbing to the Dark Side. She was presented with the chance for more power and all she had to do was agree to help in a few morally questionable things and she did. How quickly she realizes the extant of the evil being asked of her and how quickly she rebels against it will be the deciding factor in her salvation.
Well, we know that Jeannie or the Blue Djinn is getting the power when the totem is destroyed. We also know that if a Genie uses up all her or his power that they die. We know this, because, in this Genie world it is so stated in past Jeannie episode and it also say something in the information section too. So evidently not only can the Blue Genie kill another Genie, he can kill another Genie by breaking there totem and then sucking there magic into himself too.
Which leave a few question unanswered like, where the Blue Genie Totem is right now, why can he posses another Genie, does he currently have his own body and what other sneaky and underhanded stuff can he still do too.
I betting that Jeannie is still there and might even be barely conscious of what going on, but, she is obviously out of it and not in control over what going on. Obviously, the Blue Djinn has almost absolute control over Jeannie. But, I am betting that if or when the other Genie show up to take on the Blue Djinn, that it will probably be Jeannie rising up out of semi sleep condition that will probably carry the day when it come to defeating the Blue Djinn.
We’ve seen in the past that Jeanie clearly isn’t conscious when Blue takes control. @see Page 483 (https://jeaniebottle.com/?comic=jeanie-bottle-483).
Speaking of which, looking back I think is safe to assume that the moment when Blue-Jean put the Habud Jadid on Jehane hat may has been during her flashback, after all we didn´t actually see much of Jean and Jehane talking with each other and after Jehane supposedly tell Jean her story, Jean seemed to have lost the notion of time and Jehane was´t even there with her, which also make me believe that Blue give her the idea to go to the Forbidden Library to begin with.
Also, other side effect of sharing bodies is that Blue is affecting Jeanie´s magic without she even realizing it, we already see that altering Natalies brain chemistry didn´t go as Jean expected, but also, I use to believe that the incident with the jocks at the beach was what attracted Blue to Jean, but again, looking back, Jean didn´t seem to intend to send them to the past, she did´t even realize she did it to begin with, and that seemed to be a very powerful and evil spell for Jean, so she and Blue may be sharing body already at that moment, which also would explain why she is not concern with Arceli´s warnings about him, even thought she has been quite afraid of previous treats of her and Guano, so you would think Jean would be more scared of a murderous Genie.
@Robert
Robert, I understand that. What I am say is, that Jeannie is increasing losing more and more control over herself to the Blue Djinn. The things that are going on in this post of Jeanie Bottle aren’t Jeannie ideas or something that Jeannie would do on her own. Jeannie is a jerk and self centered, but, this stuff that she doing, she more like just an observer now in her own body.
@ C_Prime: You nailed it! Jean accidentally doing a hell of a lot more to those jocks on the beach than she thought she did, as well as her unintentional over-doing of Neil’s transformation, were intended as clues to hint at her possession by Big Blue.
I am sure that the hypnosis rules more or less applies, meaning that Blue isn’t able to do something that she really dosn’t want to do. Problem is that she is very chaotic, dislikes djinni in general and especially hate Guano.
In order to make her reasert control he would have to order her to do something that she really dosn’t want to do, such as hurting her friends.
I am thinking like the Blue Djinn put Jeannie into a kind of dream state where Jeannie feel like she sleep walking. Some times she can see what going on in the real world, but, she is detached and looking at what going on as onlooker rather than an actual participant of choosing her own destiny. The Blue Djinn has basically suppressed her and has at this point taken over the operation of Jeannie body, because, he is stronger than she is and maybe, because, Jeannie fail for his lies.
For Jeannie to break free of his control over her, she going to need the help of the other Genie and/or the witches to break his control. That appears to be where this stories going.
Oh that cooky, crazy Jeanie, never know what they’re going to do next!
remind me of season 4 MY LITTLE PONY FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC when Teriak appeared to steal the magic of ponies.
You know, I never thought this page, of all pages in this comic, would be compared to MLP. Heh.
Since genies are not mortal I guess they don’t die? They just… stop existing.
This terrifies me.
From Kazom’s description way back in I Dream of a Nerd, it seems like a genie using up all their magic is actually quite a bit like normal death. At least, the slow, wasting away kind of death.
Blue is doing something very different here, beyond just killing this poor genie.
So … Jeanies are Immortals from the Highlands of Scot?
Yeah, the Chinese jinn in panel 2 “I think I lost her…”, then panel 3 “Oh no.” Then again as she’s being sucked away in panel 7 “Noooo!”. Then Jeanie says in Chinese “Don’t worry,” finishing in English with “I’ll be sure to put your magic to good use.”
Interesting turn of events.
“I christen this dumpster the Queen Mary!”
Actually the real Scots came from Ireland, known as Scotia in ancient times, and there are more native speakers of Irish in the highlands of Scotland than there are in Ireland now. The majority of “Scots” today descend from a mixture of Irish, Pictish, Anglo-Saxonish, Norsish men and some women, and anyone else daft enough to settle there. It says a lot for Scotland that, like Ireland, there are a lot more “Scots” living everywhere else but Scotland.
That is w Scots can be Gaelic.
I’m going out on a limb and suggest that the genie isn’t dead.
The totem binds them to their location and links them to their master… with its destruction they lose that link. They probably go elsewhere? Genies are not born with bottles attached to them, but can be created from them once bound I think.
Her expression seemed annoyed rather then outright eye boggling fear of immenent death. If death was the result this would be the first warning a genie is given. So.. I think she’s fine. Perhaps at the palace but unable to enter the mortal realm.
I think also this is Guanos failure more then Jeans. Guano for all his faults was supposed to protect and guide Jeannie but has failed on all counts. When he finds out I think he would feel this in some capacity.
OR… GL Guano will be just as DENSE and ARROGANT as GL Than Den was and be completely unreasonable or unmercifully enough to care about Jean’s predicament. They’ll likely just punish Jean without a real fair trial like they did with poor Jehane earlier.
Some genies have about as much good ethics as they do social rights, in this comical universe anyways. I’m leaning toward them doing things that similar way with this.
I just finished writing a reply to one of Robert’s comments further up when a WILD thought hit me.
What if the Blue Djinn’s plan to use Jeanie blows up in his face?
Imagine this, all of his carefully laid plans go off without hitch, he gets his new body from the Hubun Jadid, he has all the magic he has stolen from various genies he has destroyed from around the world and has over-thrown the great Haji and is just setting himself up as the new ruler when Jeanie, horrified by his evil, uses her unique situation as his host to destroy him forever and she is left possessing all of his accumulated power an magic and is now the new Haji.
At this point, almost anything could happen. What ever happens, I am sure she will still be stuck as a Girl Genie.
@CDRudd and Robert: I gotta be honest guys, I love the artwork in Panel 1. nice interpretation of Shanghai, China. I give it a 9 out of 10.
Uhhhhh, thanks?
what’s wrong?
I think it may be a stock photo, unless CD is now going for photo realism in his artwork. although if CD flew there to take this Photo he could claim it as his.
Yeah, Bthillman’s right. It’s a photograph.
I was trying to give a sortof ironic “thank you” in a way that didn’t look like I was actually thanking you for work we didn’t do.
oops. sorry.
Stock Photo. Sorry, I’m not that good at drawing cityscapes. (I did try)
Well Jean’s joined Organization XIII so someone’s going to get messed up.
We see all that magic going to Jeanie’s chest. I wonder if it expands when holding more magic, or if it’s like the Bag of Infinite Holding. :3
Hi, the word no in Chinese Mandarin can have two translations: 沒有(mei you) and 不(bu). The 1st one is more like I don’t have type of no while the 2nd one is more to the reaction of denying or rejecting type of no. So the right translation for the no in panel 7 should be the latter. 😀
That’s what you have for pretending to be polyglots instead of just placing English text in angle brackets. :p
My computer crashed and I’ve spent a week mostly just getting access to my old accounts.
Anyhooch, tonight (maybe) the next installment of IDOAJB will be up and no one will pay attention to this forum page, so this is about my last chance to comment on this comic and its place in the latest story arc.
Yes, the Blue Djinn is EVIL!!! He (I still have doubts about the gender, quite appropriate for a TG webcomic) just murdered another of his own kind to absorb her power, which puts him squarely in the Aberration/Vampire camp for those who follow El Goonish Shive.
And this is where IDOAJB stops being a tribute to IDOJ. Nobody was ever killed in the series. It completely ignored the biggest elephant in the room of the late Sixties, the Vietnam War, which was doing its very worst at the time. I’m wondering what Barbara Eden herself thinks about this development, if she’s aware of it at all.
That said, I’m wondering exactly how Guano is going to be managed while keeping some plausibility. So far he hasn’t exhibited a lot of smarts. So how the heck did he get credited with defeating the Blue Djinn? Clearly he did, or at least the Blue Djinn believes he did.
And what is Guano worried about now? On the face of it, from his conversation with Asha, he’s more worried about who take over his position as a genie lord after Haji retires. Does he really believe he can defeat the Blue Djinn again after Big Blue has already KILLED another genie lord?
I think there has to be another player here, and the only candidate seems to be the Imposition, AKA the Smythes. If you accept that Guano is as clueless as he seems, he believes he really did defeat the Blue Djinn. But it’s pretty clear Big Blue could have taken out Guano. Now if Kazom’s right about Guano making a deal with the Witches’ Council, I think the Smythes had something do do with it.
As to what the Smythes are really up to, a clue I don’t have. Possibly they are just what they seem: Fanatics blindly following an unbending commitment no matter who it harms. They abandoned one of their own (Kaelyn, #4) without any qualms at all, an act which is just as evil as murder. How they are going to accomplish whatever they want to is a mystery. Perhaps they want to destroy both the genies and the witches; it fits their avowed mission.
However, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an endgame coming. Kaelyn was abandoned but survived as far as we know. She may decide she’s on the wrong side. And #1’s two other children may have ambitions of their own. Game of Thrones, anyone?
Maybe CD should run another opinion poll about what Jeanie is going to do, or try to do, along these lines:
* Return her powers to Rouyah and get back together with Belle as (reformed) man.
* Sacrifice herself to destroy the Blue Djinn (This was actually the ending of the first Sailor Moon series)
* Take over from Haji (if Jeanie manages to defeat the Blue Djinn, who else would be better qualified?)
* Luck out by surviving, learning nothing but not making things worse (Business as usual)
I do hope that Araceli learns what her uncle really thinks of her before the end of this arc.
Finally, while I appreciate the nod to Christina Aguilera, i think her Genie in a Bottle sucks. You’re much better off choosing Al Stewart’s Genie on a Tabletop as your go-to theme music for IDOAJB.
But Al Stewart doesn’t look as good as Asha in a Bikini.
Now, see here, CD; for you to be able to make that comparison clearly indicates that you have personally seen Al Stewart in a bikini, and that means that…
Oh, dear God. What has the world come to?
No good can come from that.
MY MIND’S EYE! IT’S GONE BLIND!
Sorry to hear about your computer crashing, Tom. That’s no fun at all.
If you haven’t already got one set up, I’d strongly recommend an online backup service for your data. I personally use Backblaze, which is pretty great. Unlimited backup for $5/mo. It gives me such great peace of mind.
You watched Sailor Moon?? I loved that show as a kid so much that my sister and I pooled our allowances to buy the VHS fansubs. We got to see the entire series back in the mid 90s, even though they didn’t dub the last season into English for years. I still have a great fondness for the characters.
Does anyone else suspect the Blue Jinn may have bitten off more then he can chew by choosing Jean(nie) as a host? At first glance the Jerk with his short-sightnedness makes for a perfect cover. On the other hand his stubbornness and refusal to be controlled means he will fight him way more than a normal genie would once he figures out what’s going on. Jean’s personality, as well as newcomer status to the genie perfesion also means that there’s a shear amount of unpredictability that the blue jinn might not be able to count on. As the saying goes, “The best swordsman need not fear the second best swordsman, but the rank amateur.”
I’ve been kind of wondering about that. Guano’s long-ago comment to Rouyaa that he “didn’t really do anything”, to defeat the Blue Djinn, makes it sound like whatever happened back then was more of a lucky accident, than a clever maneuver on Guano’s part.
And if a lucky screw-up might be what it takes to defeat the BD, then our favorite screw-up queen might be just the person to pull it off. In a surprising and funny way, of course.
According to Kazom, Guano left both Melvin Dad and Kazom hanging out to dry. Guano, basically cut and run and left Melvin Dad and Kazom to face the Blue Djinn alone. It was then that Melvin Dad, made the supreme sacrifice, by giving his life to stop the Blue Djinn and save the world along with his wife and son. Guano happen to be in the right place at the right time and got the credit for defeating the Blue Djinn when the fighting and sacrificing of life was over. Guano being jerk that he is, took the credit for the Blue Djinn defeat and they honored him by making him the New Genie Lord, to replace Kazom who got demoted or basically replaced by Guano promotion to Genie Lordship.
@Larry Actually, no, Guano “defeated” the Blue Djin back in the 60´s long before Melvin was even born, and after that he was put under the care of Kazom who despise his feelings against Guano, also seems to be under the impression that Guano did in fact defeat Blue, heck, Blue wants revenge against Guano so some true may be there.
Melvin´s Dad sacrifice himself to prevent a cult of witches to gain the power of the Djin.
I thought it was established that there are two genie’s which look like Jeanie.
Yes, but Jehane or Jeanie II if you prefer, was found guilty of stealing de Habud Jadid and was exiled, which in the genie world seems to include a change of color cause now she is a brunette with green clothes and golden shackles, and considering that all the “young” female genies were present at the palace that night, it seems that the only genies in the world with the Barbara Eden style were in fact Jean and Jehane, with Jean being the only “perfect” copy of the show now.
Well, so far, we’ve seen two – but it’s been implied that there are probably more than that.
I doubt it, as I said, all the “young” female genies were summoned to the harem in preparation for Haji´s birthday, with only Jean and Jehane looking the part, it seems they are the only humans so far who had find a empty genie totem while having the idea of Babara Eden´s genie in mind in the last 50 years.
It’s like I plan this out, isn’t it? 😛
@C_Prime:
Yes, but we didn’t necessarily SEE all the genies. Just a sampling. There could have been plenty more, off-panel.
And recall Kazom’s remark about how many blue genies there were ever since the Disney movie came out. Well, IDoJ has been out a heck of a lot longer, so it’s likely that there were even more Jeannie-lookalike genies.
So I think the fact that we’ve only seen two, so far, leaves open the possibility of there being more.
@Kattgirl Is the “young” part on the summoning what makes me doubt there are more Jeannie´s look alike, with Arceli there is hard to tell what is young for a Genie, but it seems that the young genies cannot oppose the calling to Haji´s palace, so if there where more Barbara Eden look alike genies over there, regardless of there original gender, they would have been summoned to the palace alongside Jehane, Jeanie and all the other young female genies.
There is also the fact that for a human to become a Genie a empty Totem is necessary, that is something that requires the dead or exile of a genie, and that seems like a rather odd scenario, and with Disney being the powerhouse of media that it is, yes, it makes sense that they are more Blue genies (something that must be very awkward right now) that sexy blonde genies (sadly), especially if people find totems in the forms of lamps instead of bottles.
Also, I have the question, if someone find a totem and do not have an idea of what a genie should look like, what happen? it turns into a genie that looks exactly like there human form?
