Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
A junior engineer working for a small engineering firm in Cocoa Beach. The firm focuses mostly on NASA projects.
Neil is Jean’s best friend. When Jean was turned into a genie, Neil became Jeanie’s master.
to be honest I don’t think it’ll be that much of problem, even if it does travel back with them. as the political fall out of it happening now caused more problems then the virus itself ever did. Not to say it won’t cause any problems if it does travel back and infect someone in the past. but this isn’t the first pandemic we’ve had not even in recent history. if covid where to hit during a much less politically charged time we would of handled it better and it wouldn’t of been half as bad as it turned out to be.
of course this is just my opinion. one biased on the other pandemics that also hit the nation while I was old enough to remember it and how short lived those where in comparison to this one. And as far as I remember they where no less deadly.
AFAIK, mRNA-based vaccines probably could not be invented prior to about twenty years ago, as we did not have the knowledge and tech for that degree of genetic engineering yet. If the virus were taken back in time further than that, then any vaccine would have to be a more traditional type.
“That said, I can confirm that this storyline has been in the works since before COVID started. So make of that what you will.”
What I’ll make of that is that you need to update more frequently.
😀
Kit Ramos has the right of it. the utter overwhelming vast majority of the danger presented by COVID19 comes from the political chicanery surrounding it, and it’s usefulness is bashing the numerous populist movements. Even the World Health Organization says that the fallout from global government measures surrounding covid will kill a minimum of 10 times the number of covid fatalities so far.
“A big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey… stuff” is a quote from the rebooted Doctor Who episode “Blink” (S3E10). One of the best episodes of the reboot series, one of the scariest antagonists, and all-in-all one of the best time travel stories I’ve seen. Well worth watching if you have Doctor Who on a streaming service. It follows characters who’ve never met the Doctor (he’s only on screen for a few minutes), so can be enjoyed even if you’re unfamiliar with the series. In the context of this comic, it’s a tip-off that there will be time travel in this chapter.
How long will take Neil to realize it?
How long will it take him to realize that he just made a wish–and for the first time in this scene, that Jeanie is actually paying attention to him?
Jean was only 23 when he met Melvin, and he went to high school with Neil, so they shouldn’t be going back in time that far– a decade or less, if continuity is still a thing. However, have you noticed how much US currency has changed in the last decade? Neil could be arrested for countering when he pays for that kibble burger.
Also, of course, they could run into themselves. When they went back to 1969, Neil and Jean hadn’t been born yet.
Something else that might go wrong: They go back further in time than Jean wanted. I remember an episode of Bewitched when Sam went back to the court of Henry VIII. Another witch, maybe Endora, sent Darren (still Dick York) back dressed for the 16th century. When Darren arrived, he asked a local how to get to the court of King Henry VIII. The local replied it would take him a long time to get there, because the king was Henry I.
And maybe they will run into Gary Seven. Or, of course, a Doctor Who.
Depending on how far back she goes, anyone wearing a mask would be looked on with suspicion. How soon we forget that used to be the trademark of robbers.
Time travel? Genie bottles? this could only mean one thing: They’re on a mission to save Jim Croce!
On a more serious note if they do go back to their childhood hangout we may find out more about why Jean Nessman grew up to be such a self-centered dick.
Oh, and I can recall at least one short story about time travelers inadvertently causing the extinction of the dinosaurs through disease.
> On a more serious note if they do go back to their childhood hangout we may find out more about why Jean Nessman grew up to be such a self-centered dick.
That sounds like backstory that a time travel story could certainly be well utilized to tell!
In a time before Covid, he can just say “I think I have the flu and don’t want to spread it to other people” and at worst people will just think he’s being overly dramatic
In 2003, I was working for IBM. I got the flu, and on the third day of my absence, my manager made it EXTREMELY clear that he expected to see me at work the next day. So, I went in with a mask. I was shocked at the number of IBM engineers who were offended that someone would be wearing a mask around them. “You think we’re going to make you sick?”
@Lurker314: ” the number of IBM engineers who were offended” Exactly. Pre-COVID, wearing a mask was very unusual. Even now, I think many don’t understand their true purpose.
Not in Asia. Which, by the way, is one of the reasons that Asia beat back Covid as effectively as it did. People actually _wanted_ to wear masks, because it has been the culturally expected thing to do when ill in public for decades.
Obvious paradox.
Go back just far enough to prevent earlier self from uncorking bottle.
Would normally be a risk of introducing covid-19 before its time. Genies are forbidden to make mass changes to the world, but surely decontaminating Neil and herself before leaving would be acceptable. That’s preventing a revision to the timeline.
Decontaminating single person (or two) is not mass change no matter the reason. She’s definitely allowed to do that. Now, will either of them think about it?
Or is it the predestination paradox.
They go back to the 60s to discover Jeanie no longer has any powers to get them home because Rouyaa has not interferred with the space program.
Using Neil’s future knowledge they interfere and make it look like Rouyaa did it.
So Rouyaa is destined to lose her powers and Jeanie gets them, so they can return home.
Yep, the Grandfather Paradox. Jeanie goes back in time and accidently prevents Rouyaa from changing NASA’s budget and so never gets changed into a human. Jean never opens the bottle and never gets changed into a genie. Therefore Jenie never goes back in time and Rouyaa changes the budget etc: etc. and everything goes into a time loop. Never fear, Rodge will fix everything for a Kibble Burger.
That would require Jeanie and Neil to travel all the way back to the sixties at least 40 years before they were born. It’s certainly possible but CD did the sixties already. I’m betting they’re heading for the 90’s now.
magic doesnn’t make Kibble burgers but time travel its back to the future time lets no make any mistakes in the past or run into your past self. wonder if Jean could run into her former male self
Interesting. Jeanie goes back and bumps into Jean who, as a normal guy tries to flirt with her. Jeanie scorns his advances, thus damaging his ego and turning him into the dog he is today.
back in panel 616 is that a “War Mallet” game box on the bookcase shelf. The figurerine on the top is not like the stopper to Jeanies bottle. That is not a Tiffani/Red action figure is it or maybe a Honey Heart Pixie Ranger is it?
Yes, it would definitely have to be time travel here. Jeanie saying that he doesn’t need a mask kind of give it away. As somebody has already said, Jeanie is 23 year old like right about now. Take 5 to 8 years off that and jump into the past and we have between 15 to 18 year old Jean and Neil if these two run into them self in the past in Cincinnati where Jeanie is most likely going to get those Kibble Burgers. If this is so, I see an interesting story of Jeanie running into Jean and Jean actually making a pass at Jeanie too or something along that line. But, we also can’t have Neil running into either himself or Jean, because, they would both recognize the Older Neil as being the younger Neil and we can’t have that, because, it would mess up the time line if that happened. However, Jeanie if either one or both the younger Neil or Jean met her, they would see an older girl that neither one of them recognize, time line is secure, lady disappears back into the future when there not watching what going on.
It also give CD a chance to do a back story on both the younger Neil and Jean too. Which is most likely what this section of the story about. But, we get to see the younger Neil and Jean story from the older Neil and Jeanie side of it. It would be an interesting side story to the Jeanie Bottle series if CD Rudd can pull it off.
Of coarse the could also mess up the time line and then have to clean things up like in the Back to the Future series. That would be an interesting thing for CD Rudd to try next too.
It would be interesting to see what happens if Jean stops his past self from opening the bottle and being transformed into a genie and see how everything turns out, and maybe see who else would’ve picked up the bottle and been transformed into the genie of the bottle.
The thing I noticed most on re-reading these last few pages is how comfortable Jean seems, both with Neil and with herself. There’s no friction or tension, just two old friends enjoying each other’s company. Previously Jean was either swinging between feeling trapped by her genie nature or using it to show off and there was always a strong “don’t you date” undercurrent in her interactions with Neil. You’ll note she also doesn’t appear to have extracted any payback for his perceived transgression with Aracelli while she was gone.
Did anyone ever envision Jean gently smiling while volunteering to use her powers to do a favor for Neil? Or even volunteering to use her powers in a way that’s not self-serving? I certainly didn’t. Something must have been resolved in Haji’s palace before she returned that increased her comfort level and set her mind at ease. She’d be acting like a trapped rat if all that was still hanging over her head. We’ll see if it sticks.
Your right, Jeanie is looking and acting more like a Female Genie than old Gene (Jean) that she use to be. It look like she might finally come to term with being a Female Genie on at least some level, but, we will see if it last.
Of course if they do run into there younger self, it could also push Jeanie along the way to becoming her new self as a Female Genie too. Just an idea.
@mike: Not even I can go that far–she looks a bit too sly. She knows she’s about to pull a fast one on Neil, and she’s looking forward to it.
@Larry: “Female genie”
I think that’s a crucial phrase: Jean was a male human. Jeanie is not now a female human. She’s a female genie–and I think that includes what is for her a viciously suppressed desire to please her master.
That, and Jean also knows that staying with Neil is the main thing keeping her from either having to get a new Master, or having to spend time in her “official” role as Guano’s wife. That will probably motivate her to avoid trying anything to wreck their friendship beyond repair.
For all the talk about COVID, I sincerely hope that’s not what this chapter is about. Face it: go back ten-fifteen years, and have a couple show up for an hour or two, even iif they’re both spreaders, they’re unlikely to make much of an impact.
I really, really just want Jeanie and Neil to have a little adventure together, cap it off with Kibble burgers, fries, and malts, and come home happy to be with each other.
attention everyone: until we see the next few pages of the comic, we should not jump to conclusions. on that note: we need to be patient and observe this story with a calm mind and a clear head. that is all, thank you.
That one possibility that she is somebody else masquerading as Jeanie or there a possibility that some of the guys here have come guess that she has finally come to terms with her new roll and that this might be her best choice right now. Then there the possibility that that Female Genie Nature that was installed in her is finally breaking through and is finally asserting itself.
She could go back to get the exact same burger a few times over. Though future Jean would have to go back further to get this burger until they keep loopong to a point said burger no longer exists .. they have no reason to go back in time so the burger comes back and the loop begins again
Basic question in Psych Class, If you could go back in time and meet yourself in high school, what advice would you give yourself? Neil and Jeanie have the chance to do this. I know, Jeanie would say “Do not open that bottle.” Of course by now she might like it.
Now that’s an interesting question. Jeanie has been a genie for about a year in IDOAJB time (or longer… it seems to be rather elastic). Being able to perform magic, even with the struggles and misadventures she’s endured, would be a powerful enticement to disregard that advice
Following through with that logic, Jeanie is starting to develop a female mind, hart and sole about herself too when it comes to her self image of herself of who she is now and she even expressed a desire to stay Genie too and that starting to take hold of who she want to be now also. She still remembers that she didn’t want to be girl or Genie originally and would still have fawned memories of being a guy and about how he was so really hot and stuff like that. But, now she see him as the jerk that he really is and from the female side now and she may not like him either and may even come to hate him too, because, he is a real jerk and a womanizer too, which she just happens to be right now. Especially, if he start hitting on her and tries to do Jean number on her like he does to do on other women and Jeanie would obviously know that he is doing that too. He would treat Jeanie like he treat all the other women that he has met in the past, like there just so meat to be had and there just someone to use or take advantage of too. We know how easily Jeanie get offended and will fly off the handle too, after getting offended by her younger male self like that, would she even want to warn him to stay away from that Genie Bottle after he has hit on her, because, that not who she is anymore. After over year of being a Female Genie and bumping into her male former jerk self, it would be like trying to take half an apple and half an orange and trying to tack them together, they just don’t match up and never will they match up either. Which would be an interesting side story all by itself. Not only might she not tell him about the Genie Bottle, but, she may walk away from him with a devious smile on her face as to what going to happen to him too.
If CD does choose to pursue this story line, he should break it up into two section after Neil find out there going to be doing a time travel even to get those Kibble Burger.
First section is where they go down memory lain of being in High School as they remember it. We have Jean trying to give pointer to Neil on how to get a girl and he see a slightly old blond girl standing there that he going to practice on.
Second section we find out that that blond girl was Jeanie that he was practicing on and that story line.
There’s also the matter that as a genie, Jean has a potential lifespan of thousands of years, as compared against the 80something years expected for Millennial-generation First World humans. Some people would find it quite enticing to have a chance at a healthy lifespan dozens of times longer than most people.
@ijuinkun: True, but Jeanie doesn’t think long term, she’s more into instant gratification. Given a few years of watching Neil and everyone else age around her will probably change that perspective.
What advice would I give myself? “Save up everything you earn to invest big in Tesla’s IPO.” They IPO’d in July 2010, which was long enough after I graduated from college that I could have built up a pretty decent nestegg for that investment. I’d try to get my parents in on it too, since my mom’s a big stock market buff.
A friend of mine bought 500 shares at $17. He paid $8500, and those shares are worth well over $2,000,000 now.
In that vein, I’d buy ten thousand bucks worth of Bitcoins back when they were first publicly released. The first-ever retail purchase made with Bitcoins was 10k coins for two pizzas in July 2010–a value of less than once cent per coin. Even at the start of 2012, Bitcoins were only $13 each, less than a thousandth of their peak so far.
Well, it won’t be the first and it won’t be the last time either. Should have put older Blonde Girl and she is definitely older then maybe 16 year that will probably be the age of the younger self and she is currently 23 years old.
Not were but when time for time travel and what they did back in time will be revealed since that image from the black and white chapters sweet.
If they time travel, they risk releasing the virus earlier in history. It’s not a solution.
How do we know either of them have it? Can Jeannie get infected by a human-target virus? Is either of them displaying symptoms?
I think that’s what Rea means by “risk”. We *don’t* know if Neil has it, and they probably don’t, either.
That said, I can confirm that this storyline has been in the works since before COVID started. So make of that what you will.
to be honest I don’t think it’ll be that much of problem, even if it does travel back with them. as the political fall out of it happening now caused more problems then the virus itself ever did. Couldn’t Jean use his magic to male the virus vanish while they time travel so no infection could happen?
Jean could probably cleanse the two of them of the virus if she remembers that she ought to do so.
Ok, now im confused…
I think the name of this chapter’s title is a big enough hint-hint to tell you…
“A big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey… stuff” is a quote from the rebooted Doctor Who episode “Blink” (S3E10). Jean is taking Neil out for dinner.
Does that count as a date?
Heh, interesting point!
How long will take Neil to realize it?
How long will it take him to realize that he just made a wish–and for the first time in this scene, that Jeanie is actually paying attention to him?
When did he make a wish? He hasn’t spoken that word since Jeanie dropped that ham sandwich on his head.
Hasn’t Neil already used all 3 of his wishes?
Jeannie is only still with him because genie law allows it when both want it
Although Neil didn’t use the word “wish”, it’s pretty clear Jeanie is taking that way–if only to demonstrate her amazing time traveling genie powers.
BTW, I googled Sartorelli’s last week and the only eating establishment of that name that came up is a pizzeria in Oxford, England.
I Duckduckgo’d a Sartorelli’s in Florada and they exist. Not near cocoa beach though.
https://www.menupix.com/florida/restaurants/886763/Ristorante-Sarnellis-Orange-Park-FL
It is in Orange park Sorry Sarnelli’s but somewhat close.
Something else that might go wrong: They go back further in time than Jean wanted. I remember an episode of Bewitched when Sam went back to the court of Henry VIII. And maybe they will run into Gary Seven. Or, of course, a Doctor Who.
Jeannie the masks are more for everyone ELSE’s protection not the wearer’s. It’d be even more important if you were traveling to the past.
Depending on how far back she goes, anyone wearing a mask would be looked on with suspicion. How soon we forget that used to be the trademark of robbers.
Time travel? Genie bottles? this could only mean one thing: They’re on a mission to save Jim Croce!

Oh, and I can recall at least one short story about time travelers inadvertently causing the extinction of the dinosaurs through disease.
And then there’s Bradbury’s story about getting a dictator installed as President by stepping on a butterfly….
Amongst many others.
> On a more serious note if they do go back to their childhood hangout we may find out more about why Jean Nessman grew up to be such a self-centered dick.
That sounds like backstory that a time travel story could certainly be well utilized to tell!
Neil, If you go back in time and walk into a cafe wearing a black mask everyone is going to think its a holdup.
Maybe if he walked into a bank like that
In a time before Covid, he can just say “I think I have the flu and don’t want to spread it to other people” and at worst people will just think he’s being overly dramatic
Still chancy. That was very rare until Covid.

@Robert: But this story does not take place in Asia. Here in the USA, before COVID, masks definitely attracted oft-unwelcome attention.
Obvious paradox.

maybe a different dimension?
No, time travel.
A fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to Man. A dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind.
back in panel 616 is that a “War Mallet” game box on the bookcase shelf. The figurerine on the top is not like the stopper to Jeanies bottle. That is not a Tiffani/Red action figure is it or maybe a Honey Heart Pixie Ranger is it?
You know, I wondered what the heck that thing was while I was editing those pages, but never asked CD. Even at high res, it’s quite unidentifiable.
That litle figure on the bookcase does look female in profile.
Obviously, then, Neil needs to be disguised. Cue Natalie.
It would be interesting to see what happens if Jean stops his past self from opening the bottle and being transformed into a genie and see how everything turns out, and maybe see who else would’ve picked up the bottle and been transformed into the genie of the bottle.
Oh god, is Jeanie messing with time travel during a pandemic…….. this can not end well
The thing I noticed most on re-reading these last few pages is how comfortable Jean seems, both with Neil and with herself. There’s no friction or tension, just two old friends enjoying each other’s company. Previously Jean was either swinging between feeling trapped by her genie nature or using it to show off and there was always a strong “don’t you date” undercurrent in her interactions with Neil. She’d be acting like a trapped rat if all that was still hanging over her head. We’ll see if it sticks.
Yes, in panel 4 Jeanie definitely looks happy, almost as if her “mothering” gene has kicked in.
Your right, Jeanie is looking and acting more like a Female Genie than old Gene (Jean) that she use to be. It look like she might finally come to term with being a Female Genie on at least some level, but, we will see if it last.

@50srefugee:
That, and Jean also knows that staying with Neil is the main thing keeping her from either having to get a new Master, or having to spend time in her “official” role as Guano’s wife. That will probably motivate her to avoid trying anything to wreck their friendship beyond repair.

So Jean’s messing with time travel. Great. What could go wrong?
Something about Jean looks completely different in that third panel.
Honestly I like how she looks, but she looks like someone else.
That one possibility that she is somebody else masquerading as Jeanie or there a possibility that some of the guys here have come guess that she has finally come to terms with her new roll and that this might be her best choice right now.
Mike:
“old blonde girl”. Larry, you are in so much trouble.
Well, it won’t be the first and it won’t be the last time either. Should have put older Blonde Girl and she is definitely older then maybe 16 year that will probably be the age of the younger self and she is currently 23 years old.
