Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
For some reason I have the image of him meeting a girl, starting to aim for sleeping around then stopping because he got her into trouble and she asked him to behave thus annoying her again for not proving her point.
She’s acting calmly. I don’t know about rationally. She is hoping “Jean” sleeps around to prove her point that all guys sleep around? Wasn’t the fact that Jean sleeps around what the other women were confronting her about?
Notice that both angel-Jeanie and devil-Jeanie are giving reasons not to frogify Rodge (yet).
Also notice the different colors of their costumes. Except for the red hats which stay the same:
* The pink parts of Jeanie’s costume turn white in angel-form, and the same dark red as her hat in devil form, except for the shoes, which turn dark red.
* The red parts of Jeanie’s costume turn dark red in devil form, the same color as her devil-horns and devil-tail.
It’s a nice touch that further illustrates the two sides of Jean’s nature, and perhaps also that the selfish side isn’t always in charge. I hope this isn’t the last we see of them.
So Jean’s plan is to have Rodger cheat on her to prove that guys sleep around and that’s ok?
Did she fall on her head and I missed it? That is a full on retard plan. All she is going to do is prove the other girls right, that Jean is a scum bag.
I am with Senko on this one. Jeanie not thinking this thing through and she just trying to deal with the problem that Rodge just handed her. She not thinking about the problem is going to be creating for her if she not there to stop him, which will be the next problem that she will have to deal with.
Well, Jeannie is a moron. It’s definitely a holdover from before she got “semi-phenomenal, nearly-cosmic power”. From everything we’ve learned about Jean, he was a basically a crappy human being and a giant waste of space. Why Neil was friends with him, I have not managed to figure out. Then again, Neil isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, either. Better than Jean, but still a tad on the “clueless” side.
I’ve always considered Neil to be a little too much of a nice guy. I think he’s probably friends with Jean simply because no one else would be. But he does tend to let people take advantage of him. On the couple of occasions where he really got mad at Jean, it was kind of refreshing, and good to see him stand up for himself. Neil has gotten smarter, though. And of course, compared to Rodge, even Jean seems pretty bright.
I see pre Jeanie Jean as being a bit like Barney Stinson from how I met your mother actually. Not someone you really want to deal with as a girl especially one looking for a long term commitment but actually pretty decent deep down. Such as his long term goals with the company he was working for or travelling around the world with robin when trying to make things work out he didn’t ask he to quit her job for their marriage he tried to make it work with an online blog for himself.
The win-win for this would be for Rodger to decline a come-on from one of those girls by saying he would have cheated IF he didn’t think Jean was “the one.”
This would prove girl-Jean’s point that guys cheat while improving boy-Jean’s standing with some of them because he wont cheat if it’s the right girl.
I think that staying calm and writing the review is actually the most mature thing Jeannie’s done yet. (Except that leaving Rodge alone at a party seems a bit like handing a loaded machine gun to a hyperactive eight-year-old.)
CD, the close-up in panel 1 is wonderful. Thank you!
Interestingly enough, in Panel 3, Rodge is… voluntarily trying to be helpful. Unbelievable. Did we just enter the Twilight Zone?
Luckily, she didn’t have to make up her mind. Both sides wanted the same thing this time, although for different reasons. Although I guess it still matters whether she acted to be forgiving of Rodge or to carry out her stupid scheme. Sadly, i suspect it is the latter.
Actually it neither one. It was left open and no decision was made. Which is a mistake with Rodge, because Rodge is looking to score, kind of like Jean use to do when it comes to girls. Jeanie been a girl too long and she use to Neil, because Neil won’t do that. But, Rodge will. Your slipping Jeanie and your forgetting with who your with.
I’m wondering if some one is going to notice that Jeanie has left and then later figures out that it was her that actually wrote the review considering the time required and that “Jean” had stayed at the party. The boss is informed and he then questions “Jean” about past reviews and realizes “Jean” didn’t write those reviews and fires him. He then hires Jeanie once he figures out she is the one who has been writing the reviews.
Don’t worry about it, they won’t even know that Jeanie gone, but, they will know when Rodge either scores or try’s to score and they will make a big deal out of that. Jeanie won’t know whether to be mad or relieved, because, now she doesn’t have to act like his fiance, which Jeanie doesn’t want to do.
So it will be a toss up as to what happens or if Jeanie just act mad for effect or really is mad, when what ever happens happens.
No one will remember that Jean didn’t have time to write a review. It will be Jean doing what Jean always does and why he has such a bad reputation, because he does it.
There still a lot that can happen before this arc of Jeanie is done and should be done. I still think that it would still be a nice touch to have Belle coming in at the end of this disaster looking Jean and of course Jeanie can’t say anything or do anything except watch and get pissed off and for her turn to do a number on Rodge.
Kattgirl: I am worried that these two lunkheads might figure out the problem, This leads to another possibility. Perhaps concocted this rewrite to get some alone time with Jeanie.
I got the feeling she never actually said she hated it to her boss so its not that it magically showed up its that she had already written it and had it ready to submit but now has to change the whole thing for a tight deadline while lying through her teeth because Rodge talked it up to her boss. Be interesting to see how those who agree with her normal reviews take a good review of what she feels is a bad film. Of course there’s also the lingering question would Jean have considered it a bad film or are her tastes changing a little.
Yeah, they’d probably make more sense if Angel Jeanie was saying Devil Jeanie’s line instead of that short cop-out line, and if Devil Jeanie was going for the frog transformation.
Maybe Jean plans to set up her editor. How? She arranges a tryst somewhere, and when the boss man shows up, the Witches Three are waiting in ambush. Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble… That could be pretty mean to Debbie, though, if she doesn’t already know her dad is a womanizer.
Actually, Jean could kill two birds with that stone: She might be able blackmail the editor into stop interfering with “Jean’s” work. It would only work if the editor is a secret womanizer, though. If he’s anything like Hefner, fuhgettaboutit.
Actually the theory in my last comment isn’t valid–although it is still possible Jean will try something like that.
Jean’s plan could have been simpler: Just let Rodge be Rodge. Jean has to have heard all about how Rodge behaved in Las Vegas, and the three angry ladies are all hot. And since Jean is leaving, Rodge will still have plenty of time to be Rodge while socializing.
Jean’s point may still be proven wrong. There are many guys who like to sleep around but not all guys. It’s usually just a few that tend to do so and they tend to be very unhappy miserable people that want to try to party their misery away.
Jeanie needs to send Roger back to the room to write the review, which can published as a “guest” column, regardless of how childish it may be. (Although it could be that Rodge can in fact write–and he may be more in tune with this kind of movie.) Perhaps Jeanie could go with him to collaborate and prop up the English a bit.
But leaving Rodge wandering around on his own at a press party?
@2Scribble C’mon, Jeanie. Stop proving how badly you need a master.
Most likely s(he) wants a life to come back to post-Geniefication. I know I would, if at all feasible. And I’d be surprised if off camera s(he) wasn’t still looking for ways to undo this.
I have theories as to how that could be achieved, which largely revolve around Ms. Eden (Rouyaa). But I won’t go into them here because it’s the only way I can see that would work, and I don’t want to see CD in a corner due to fan guessing.
Actually, I don’t see Jeanie going back to being Jean a guy, but, I do see her trying to going back to being a guy some time in the future, but, obviously she will fail in her attempt to go back to being a guy, because, that would be the end of the series and if CD Rudd was going to end the series, it would be better fully girly Jeanie and her her marry Neil and I don’t see that happening either. But, I do see it eventually turning into long slow romance between those two.
Also, we saw Jeanie and Neil in 1958 doing one of Jeanie time things like in the TV series and it was number one on CD Rudd list of what we the readers would like to see next. Which was before Rouyaa became Ms Eden. That could make for an interesting story and Jeanie being Jeanie can cause a big screw up like she usually causes, but, it could be one of her efforts to turn back into a guy.
Yes, it represent one of the last vestiges of being Jean a guy, instead of Jeanie the Genie of the bottle and she doesn’t want to let go of her past life even though she doesn’t have to work to make a living, it still therapeutic to her mental out look and how she see herself.
…? It’s been established both in the comic and in Q&A that Jean and Neil aren’t attracted to each other. It would mean a massive shift for the comic to end on that note.
It wouldn’t have to mean the end of the comic, either, could be done with a change of main characters. It’d be starting with the !NeilJean arc rather that whatever comes after.
jeanie and Neil might not be atracted to each other but with Jeanies natural genie nature they could end up acting like girlfriend and boy friend. This is asuming Jeanie stops being so self centered. Also by acting i mean all the closeness with out the sexy parts.
That being said Jeanie seem to hug his arm and sit touching him already so maybe she is near the tipping point of having feelings to. Neil how ever is not there yet or is scared of her flip floping nature.
If CD made a story arc where Neil gets a girl friend we might learn more.
I have a question that perhaps has already been answered. Why does Jean always have to have the red hat on, does it make it easier to identify her from the other characters?
In the IDOJ TV sitcom, Jeannie never wore her hat when out of her harem costume.
@Gildsoul: That actually has been answered – she’s such a ditz, that when she poofs herself up a new outfit, she forgets about the little hat.
Personally, that seems like kind of thin excuse to me; you’d think that the hat would disappear right along with all the other clothes. I initially assumed the same thing you did, that it was a visual clue that made her readily identifiable, no matter what form she took. But hey, it’s CD’s comic, and if he says it works differently, well, then, I guess that’s that.
I’ll be honest. It’s actually both. I keep the hat on Jeanie to mainly identify her when she is in costume or looks like someone else. (hence making it easy to tell who Jean is, since sometime it’s hard to tell characters apart from each other).
The hat was remarked on so often, I figure I’ll write in an excuse why Jean usually has it on.
A couple days ago Saylor A suggested that Jeanie might be recognized as the real author, and Larry said he’d like Belle to show up. Why not both?
If Belle shows up at the party after Jean leaves, see “Jean” (Rodge) being Rodge, which won’t seem that different from Jean being Jean–remember, Belle’s a psych major. The editor could contribute to the mess by saying something like “I thought you were engaged to Jeanie.” So Belle, who likes Jeanie, would be even angrier at “Jean” for not only not telling her he’s moved on but for stealing Jeanie from Niel. What’s next? How aobut storming over to Jeanie’s hotel room to find her writing. Or just storming over and interrupting her writing.
And if Belle catches Jeanie before she can get out of the party, Jeanie will have to decide whether to throw Rodge under the bus or get Belle out before she discovers “Jean” (Rodge) and/or learns that “Jean” is engaged to someone else. Jean still hopes to recover his old life and Belle’s a part of it, and she might actually be really in love with Belle (which doesn’t necessarily mean not falling in lust with other women.) This is the kind of situation that can support maybe a whole third of a romantic comedy movie.
And it’s another splendid opportunity for Jeanie to lose it and finally tell the truth to Belle–before or after doing some undeniable magic.
A nice cherry on top of this sweet confection would be Agent Anderson witnessing it.
Since it would only really make sense for Jean to go back to the hotel to work on his review and leave his fiancée at the party, she should change who Rodge is disguised as.
Nice close-up, there. Well done. Jean’s acting pretty rationally here; still, leaving Rog behind might not be the best idea.
That zoom-in is one of the best looking panels yet!
I know, right? I loved editing this page because of that panel.
Whenever I go back to look at the early strips in this series, I am always impressed with how CD’s skills as a cartoonist keep growing.
Yup! I loves me some gold ol’ Artist Evolution. It’s one reason I enjoy El Goonish Shive so much.
Questionable Content may be the Art Evolution Champion…
Impressive job with that first panel. I expect that Rodge will do something stupid while Jean is not watching him, it seems to be a habit.
Not sure about it being a habit – with Rodge, it seems to be more like it’s genetic. 😉
I’d like to see both shoulder genies in a separate picture, as a close-up-close-up (is that right?)
If you subscribe to DC Rudd’s Patreon, I think I can make that happen. 🙂
And apparently Jeannie has red eyes. Or maybe she was up late and they’re bloodshot?
That’s for artistic effect. She has grey eyes that are being shown with a red tinge around the irises to indicate her anger.
So Jean’s plan is to have Rodger cheat on her to prove that guys sleep around and that’s ok?
Did she fall on her head and I missed it? That is a full on retard plan. All she is going to do is prove the other girls right, that Jean is a scum bag.
@Bad taiming:
“That is a full on retard plan.”
And of course, you’re surprised because Jean is normally a PhD-level genius whose plans work perfectly. Right?
I highly doubt she’s thought it through that far.
I am with Senko on this one. Jeanie not thinking this thing through and she just trying to deal with the problem that Rodge just handed her. She not thinking about the problem is going to be creating for her if she not there to stop him, which will be the next problem that she will have to deal with.

I agree I love that close up and her expression as well. The faint red glow of an angry genie around her is also a nice touch.
“Devil or Angel, she can’t make up her mind…”
Luckily, she didn’t have to make up her mind. Both sides wanted the same thing this time, although for different reasons. Although I guess it still matters whether she acted to be forgiving of Rodge or to carry out her stupid scheme. Sadly, i suspect it is the latter.

The fun part is when she set up Neil as her with her previous girlfriend he wound up doing just that and being considered a better lover at it too.
Awesome job there on this strip, thanks for the fun
I’m wondering if some one is going to notice that Jeanie has left and then later figures out that it was her that actually wrote the review considering the time required and that “Jean” had stayed at the party. The boss is informed and he then questions “Jean” about past reviews and realizes “Jean” didn’t write those reviews and fires him. That would be an interesting twist.

With Roger impersonating Jean while Jean while Jenny writes the review how are they going to explain the review magically showing up.
Maybe he wrote it in the bathroom on his smartphone.
O”mly if he goes to the bathroom.
@Theo: If he drinks as much as usual, that won’t even be a question.
The editor doesn’t expect the revised review before Monday. Rodge did remember to tell Jean that in the strip before this one.
Um, amazed no-one found this yet. ‘Next’ link from prior comic is dead.
Seems to work fine for me. Have you tried refreshing the page? You may have an old cached version.
Wait, why are both shoulder genies playing being good?
They’re both giving the same advice, but for wildly different reasons.
Yeah, they’d probably make more sense if Angel Jeanie was saying Devil Jeanie’s line instead of that short cop-out line, and if Devil Jeanie was going for the frog transformation.
Been fixed, I see. (Yay, I contributed to the community!)
…what the heck does it prove that the guy they knew slept around sleeps around?
Maybe Jean plans to set up her editor. How? She arranges a tryst somewhere, and when the boss man shows up, the Witches Three are waiting in ambush. Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble… That could be pretty mean to Debbie, though, if she doesn’t already know her dad is a womanizer.

Oh God… don’t leave him alone you IDIOT!

@2Scribble C’mon, Jeanie. Stop proving how badly you need a master.
Is there a reason Jeanie continues to work that I missed?
It probably hasn’t yet occurred to her that she can pay her apartment rent simply by poofing up stacks of 100 dollar bills.
Or, just… “suspension of disbelief”?
Didn’t we just have a segment concerning why that’s a bad idea in the modern age?
But, yeah, I expect it’s mostly habit.
And that she actively enjoys writing those reviews.
Most likely s(he) wants a life to come back to post-Geniefication. I know I would, if at all feasible. And I’d be surprised if off camera s(he) wasn’t still looking for ways to undo this.

Have you considered a career as a TV script writer, Tom? 😉
Worse. I wrote quite a lot of Sailor Moon fan fiction.
OHHH! The horrors! The humanity! Say it’s not SO! 🙂
Well… looks like someone is about to be punished in the name of the Moon!
And I do wholeheartedly agree with Katt’s take on your writing ability!
I never wrote any, but I sure read a lot of it.
Since it would only really make sense for Jean to go back to the hotel to work on his review and leave his fiancée at the party, she should change who Rodge is disguised as.
