A junior engineer working for a small engineering firm in Cocoa Beach. The firm focuses mostly on NASA projects.
Neil is Jean’s best friend. When Jean was turned into a genie, Neil became Jeanie’s master.
That, and Neil’s astonishing blindness, are about the only things that could let Ari get away with this.
But Neil knows who Jeanie really is: male, selfish, and full of reflexive contempt for authority.
Ari, on the other hand, loves being a genie, and being female. She is devoted to her master.
Also worth noting that Ari’s stunningly ignorant of modern culture. Jean’s job is the study and critiquing of modern culture. His deep immersion in such matters is impossible to fake. Ari doesn’t even know she has to try.
Neil’s going to tip to the scam fairly quickly, I expect. He’s easily snowed in the heat of the moment, but give him a bit of time to think, and he does figure things out.
Neil is a little slow to pick up on things, so he might not recognize that “Jeanie” is coming on to him right away. I think eventually he’ll catch on, but it should be amusing for a while until he does.
I’d have cut Arcelli some slack over the whole bottle-swapping thing, if she had just moved onto identity theft. That is what pushes it from “hilarious hi-jinks” to outright evil. One thing is for sure though, when Jean gets back, Neil is really going to suffer!! Misplaced retribution is always funny.
CM, please lighten up. Less-than-perfect impersonations are a comedy element as old as Shakespeare. “Identity theft” is a loaded term — where is Araceli’s criminal intent?
Her criminal intent is to steal Neal away from Jean. She may be a little nicer, but she definitely has the same obsession that Jeannie II from the IDoJ does. Her actions may or may not be exactly criminal, but her intent is definitely borderline evil.
Neil, being the complete bonehead he is, won’t realize that’s not Jean. It’d be funny if he actually starts to warm up to her advances, because once the real Jean comes back he’d be all awkward at the fact that he’s starting to fall for his best friend.
I wonder for how many issues Neil will not know the real truth? Even so I guess the story will switch to the place Jean is locked from #170 up to #180-#190 at least.
“starved for any kind company at all because her bottle’s been on the ocean floor for several centuries now” actually excuses quite a lot.
This is where Neil needs to step up and show his true Mastering chops, by figuring out a way to get Jeanie back while not condemning Ari to eternal solitude.
Devolving into? The very first plotline involved Jean poofing Neil into a dancer at a strip club. I’d say Jeans been a vengeful type of genie all along. That’s been the source of some of the better bits of comedy in fact. =)
You know I don’t like the way Araceli is becoming a scheming little ahem. That said I can see a lot of way’s this could go badly wrong for both of them considering Jeanie’s still the equivilent of a child in terms of training and experience, Araceli hadn’t poofed back to her bottle when the offer was made and therefore Jeanie should be able to get back as well, Jeanie had offered to give up most of her power to remain with Neil which may or may not be a personal contract as opposed to a totem one.
And much as she’d be a VAST improvement over an abusive selfish genie whose not even supposed to be the ‘careful what you wish for’ type, she can’t realistically keep this up. She’s going to slip sooner than later if not form her lack of knowledge related to modern western culture, then her lack of knowledge of Jean’s habits and past and relations.
Bahahaha, oh poor Neil, he’s going to get very confused very quickly XD
“Gene?”
“Yes, Master?”
“uh…Want a hot dog?”
“Urp!”
“Ari! What have you done with Gene? Bring her back this instant!”
I mean, the instant Ari calls Neil “Master”, the instant she’s less than supremely snarky, the jig is up.
But then again she was just at “extensive” genie training so Neil might think she has changed.
I think she just blew it there, we don’t usually say ‘the television’ just ‘television’. (I.E. A little too formal for Jean?)

Let the craziness begin!
With his track record of mistaken identity, I think LHS will appear, drag Araceli back to ‘training’, and pop Jean back into the red bottle.
That’s a low down dirty bit o’ cheatin’.
Ooo, for some reason that fact that Araceli is now impersonating Jeanie is somehow extremely hot.
Welp, looks like he’s not going to be figuring out this one for awhile.
Aracelli is like Jeannie’s evil sister from the series.
Neil is a little slow to pick up on things, so he might not recognize that “Jeanie” is coming on to him right away. I think eventually he’ll catch on, but it should be amusing for a while until he does.

My, my. When did Araceli turn into such a clever girl? XD
I wonder for how many issues Neil will not know the real truth? Even so I guess the story will switch to the place Jean is locked from #170 up to #180-#190 at least.
See the thing is, Aracelli is Neil’s Genie now, due to the totem switch. So they would have to switch totems back for Jean to be Neil’s Genie again
This is going to end very bad for him when Jean comes back.
I kind of like this Jene more
This is kinda mean spirited of her and I did not expect Aracelli to do that…
Of course, she might have been a bad genie to end up imprisoned…
Maybe she’s encountered several mean masters and is just extatic to have met a nice guy like Neil because of it.
That, or she’s starved for any kind company at all because her bottle’s been on the ocean floor for several centuries now…
she does want to be in love with him too, or at least what she thinks is love

*shakes head* Araceli won’t be able to keep up the act for more than five minutes! :p
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the sea, Jean is devolving into a vengeful type of genie. ^^;

While Araceli now looks like Jean it would be fun if Jean now looks like Araceli
Now, that’s cold blooded.
And much as she’d be a VAST improvement over an abusive selfish genie whose not even supposed to be the ‘careful what you wish for’ type, she can’t realistically keep this up. UH OH
Ah, who am I kidding…
This won’t take too long.
