Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
I don’t think it’s future changing. I think this is a closed time loop. Jeanie always attended Jean and Neil’s prom. The punch was always spiked. Jean always attended with Jeanie. He just doesn’t remember most of what happened after he drank too much punch. etc.
I’m sticking with my theory that Jean, as a magical being, is naturally a part of the timeline and in this case her actions and their effects can’t cause a paradox (since they could maybe interfere with Jean becoming a genie otherwise)
However I don’t think the same rule applies to Neil.
Do you think that the fact that a magical being brought Neil along for the ride indicate that HE is also naturally part of the timeline and cannot cause a paradox?
The trouble is that no matter what a genie does a human always retains free will. That’s part of ‘da rules’. Jeanne has opened a door to the past but Neil is walking it …
A genie can not interfere in a mortals will.. and That might apply to any decisions made in the past. I’m only guessing here of course.
Of course if she outright says you did x and I’m offering you a chance to do y.. that seems feasible?
To be fair, it’s possible that this is WHY Jean has consistently shown such poor recollection of the events of his Prom. So maybe this was always *meant* to happen?
What timeline, Neil and Jeanie will return to find that things have changed and they will have been replaced by their alternates and Jean is not a Jeanie. Or, maybe it will be worst or better, but it will be different.
When they return Jeanie will still be Jeanie and there might be some minor changes, but, thing will be pretty much the same as when she left. However there might be a fair amount of changes with Neil like having Zoey for his girlfriend or something like that. If there are any serious changes, it will be around Neil and not Jeanie. If Jean doesn’t become Jeanie, it will blow up the whole time line thing and that can’t happen. Like a major paradox will happen where two different things happen and they both can’t happen type of thing.
Or Zoe “was” his girlfriend.
And when she left him he became a drunk, got fired from his job, evicted for not paying rent, and ended up being homeless.
And now someone else is Jeanie’s master.
There one thing wrong with you logic Fearless Ferret, the future that our Neil came from, he was not a drunk, he wasn’t fired from his job or nor was he evicted from his apartment and he didn’t have Zoey as his girlfriend or wife either. If Neil goes back to the future and he has Zoey as his girlfriend or wife then the past has been changed enough so the future that our Neil came from isn’t the future that he came originally.
Most of the people here want to be dogmatic about the past can’t be changed even a little bit and that the end of the subject as far as there concerned, then they want to dance around issue of having Zoey in Neil Future. On the other hand I have no problem doing minor changes to the past so we can have somebody we want in Neil future. As long as we don’t do some major change that will cause a Meager Paradox like Jean not becoming Jeanie so they can go into the past to the School Prom, then I am OK with those changes to the future.
IMHO nothing much will be changed except Neil’s little harem will grow to three with Zoey making an appearance. Jeannie just realized why she doesn’t remember any of this so she may sit back and enjoy the rest of the night.
That’s a good question. I know CD is planning to do it this year, and I suspect it’ll run from Saturday the 25th through Friday the 31st. But that’s subject to change.
The “Twisty” chapter of SailorSun.org ended up with two different versions of Bay in the same timeline. I’m thinking this one just might end up with two different versions of someone; maybe Neil/Natalie; maybe Jean/Jeannie; maybe both. And for extra twistiness, maybe the alternate version or versions won’t be able to go back from being teenagers.
If there are two endings, it has to be with Neil and not Jeanie. If it with Jeanie, it will mess up the time line too badly and generate a paradox that will wipe everything out. We can have changes to the future, but, they have to be within certain limits.
In that last panel, Jeanie is noticeably shorter than Jean. I looked at some earlier strips, and she’s about the same height as Jean. If it isn’t a matter of perspective. She’s been changed, most likely by whatever she just poured into the punchbowl. She looks younger and sounds more innocent. The change may explain why she doesn’t remember events; she was accidentally under some sort of spell. How long does it last, and will others at the dance be affected?
So the redhead ended screwing herself without any outside help.
And speaking of “screwing herself”, I hope Natalie arrives in time to stop both Jeans from doing something they will likely regret.
It’s a good thing Neil talked Jean out of that dress. Though Jeanie does put a new spin on the concept of “clothing optional” — when Jeanie says she’s changing her clothes, she’s literally changing the clothes.
As for the rest, it’s hard to regret things you can’t remember and it looks like the booze already has a head start on that.
I actually never saw that until you pointed it out. Hope there ain’t *Demons* to add to the plot now. She looked like a succubus, so maybe some naughty things will happen in this party
It’s probably just me, but panel 1 and 4 both seem to have Squidward dancing in silhouette behind the Jeanie. I really need to get more sleep….
I just realized Jeanie is referring to Jean’s first time drinking booze, explaining why she/he doesn’t remember the issue with the red dress. Silly English…having two different meanings with the same words. Again, I need more sleep.
Just a thought… could it be that Jeanie bought the “Dress” that would have been bought by the Head Cheerleader? That is why she does not remember and also… as a guy, would he have noticed this at all? I mean every girl remembers what she wore to her prom. Guys can you say you remember what your date wore without looking at a picture?
Doubtful. Jeannie poofed her and Natalie’s dresses into existence. She didn’t buy them. Although the first dress she poofed (which Natalie talked her out of wearing) does bear a strong resemblance to Rita’s dress. I guess that’s the author’s way of saying Jeannie would’ve been banned from the prom if she hadn’t listed to Natalie and had worn that dress.
If they make changes in the timeline will they remember them when they go back. Like if Zoe becomes Neil’s girlfriend will he know that or will it be a big suprise.
Only about half of teens drink. And only about a quarter of them drink regularly. The ones who drink a lot just to try convince you that “everyone does it” to deflect criticism of their behavior, and to pressure you into joining them.
Does Jean seem like the kind of kid who has a lot of friends to go get liquor with? So far it seems like Jean’s only friend is Neil. Neil seems too much of a nerd to go drinking.
Actually, jean doesn’t have any other friend but, Neil or at least Neil is the only guy that won’t walk away from Jean. That the primary reason that Jean moved to Coco Beach, Florida so he could be with his only friend or at least someone that he can call his friend.
I’m substantially older than 16 and I’ve never been drunk. The taste and burning sensation of any alcohol are very unappealing. In my opinion, it’s not worth the trouble to endure those aspects to get to whatever is the “benefit”. Also, the idea of not being able to think clearly is abhorrent to me.
Well Natalie/Neil called that and future changing.

@Mega This migh be true… I have the same theory

Well I wonder what consequences this will have when they return to their own time period?
Hopefully they can make it thru the rest of the prom without destroying the timeline with their actions….
To be fair, it’s possible that this is WHY Jean has consistently shown such poor recollection of the events of his Prom. So maybe this was always *meant* to happen?
They’ll be fine as long as they don’t step on any butterflies.
Nice reference!

Christmas week of Jeanie Bottle when does it start?
That’s a good question. I know CD is planning to do it this year, and I suspect it’ll run from Saturday the 25th through Friday the 31st. But that’s subject to change.
She’s hella cute in her gingerbread dress, at any rate.

Jeanie’s sultry expression in the last panel is making me uncomfortable.
Haha, right? I’m guessing that she’s thinking, “lol I was so adorably inexperienced back then!”
I would say coy rather than sultry 🙂
So the redhead ended screwing herself without any outside help.
And speaking of “screwing herself”, I hope Natalie arrives in time to stop both Jeans from doing something they will likely regret.

I see that the demon image from the last page has vanished… was it there because of the page number or was there an ulterior motive?
I actually never saw that until you pointed it out. Hope there ain’t *Demons* to add to the plot now. She looked like a succubus, so maybe some naughty things will happen in this party
So I’m betting Jeanie is thinking about pranking him/herself now that her younger self is drunk.
“Squidward” has been on all the pages with dancers in the background.
“See the girl with the red dress on…she can do the Birdland all night long, oh, yeah…”
Just a thought… could it be that Jeanie bought the “Dress” that would have been bought by the Head Cheerleader? That is why she does not remember and also… as a guy, would he have noticed this at all? I mean every girl remembers what she wore to her prom. It seem more and more likely they did NOT made any change in past, that it always happened like this.
Doubtful. Jeannie poofed her and Natalie’s dresses into existence. She didn’t buy them. Although the first dress she poofed (which Natalie talked her out of wearing) does bear a strong resemblance to Rita’s dress. I guess that’s the author’s way of saying Jeannie would’ve been banned from the prom if she hadn’t listed to Natalie and had worn that dress.
dress would probably be okay today’s prom but not back in the time they went to
If they make changes in the timeline will they remember them when they go back. Like if Zoe becomes Neil’s girlfriend will he know that or will it be a big suprise.
I think it’s quite possible that any changes to the timeline will come as a complete surprise, much like they did for Marty in Back to the Future.
Yea I am not buying it, there are no sixteen year old on the planet that have not tried being drunk at least a few times
Then I suppose I’m not from this planet.
Neither am I
I waited until I was 17.
Only about half of teens drink. And only about a quarter of them drink regularly. The ones who drink a lot just to try convince you that “everyone does it” to deflect criticism of their behavior, and to pressure you into joining them.

I didn’t get drunk a single time before I was 19.
I agree.
I know what I want Santa to leave in my stoking this year.
An empty bottle (totem)?
I can see it now, Gary the female Genie or was that Mary?
Is Jeanie self-aware of how femenine her expressions and gestures have become over time?
She certainly is becoming more comfortable in her body, isn’t she?
Not sure. But it’s certainly clear to US! 🙂
