Jeanie

Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office. On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.

“The one in pink is yours?”

    Delicious.

And not far off the mark. Neil actually is Jeanie’s Master, if only he’d wake up to the fact.

Actually, since Neil already made his three wishes, does Jeanie still *have* to do what he says? I’m not sure if that’s been officially established or not.

I believe the book said she could chose to stay with her master with diminished powers (phone batteries about to die so I cant check but yes he’s very hands off but he is still her master (and shell probably.come round to being his girlfriend/wife as well in time).

It was either this or the bottle.

I think any sane system would make sure that a headstrong genie like Jeanie, who recognizes no limits on her behavior, has a master (or mistress) to rein in her worst excesses.

Genies in this universe are supposed to serve, after all.

I don’t know about becoming Neil’s girlfriend or wife, however, although I admit she doesn’t seem to miss being a guy all that much.

She’s also brought him lunch, tried to show off her powers, teleported to him when asleep.

To be specific teleported, cuddled up and gone “mrrrrmmm.”

I like the surprised look on Sam’s face when Jean was able to counter her spell!

    • Senko
      March 11, 2014, 7:58 am | # | Reply

And her opinion of Jeanie goes up. Question is can sam counter her own attack or is she now out of the fight?

      March 11, 2014, 6:34 pm | # | Reply

Sam may not be able to use her magic, but I bet she can step out from under the water stream. To use a GURPSism, I doubt whether Jeanie’s water stream power has the Homing enhancement, and Jeanie’s aim is still going to be off.

And besides, it wouldn’t be very funny if the duel was over too soon.

Actually, Jean being able to use her magic without really trying is established pretty early on with breakfast in her first morning as a genie.

Also, the meanest thing Jean has ever done with her magic is turning guys into girls. Maybe we’ll see Jean turn Sam into a guy?

      • Senko
        March 12, 2014, 2:46 am | # | Reply

Except there’s a difference between being able to use her magic freely and not.being Neils genie. That is to say while she can use her power what she can do with it is less than she could if she was granting the original 3 wishes and as far as her new genie society is.concerned Neil is still her master its just now she choose him to be thatrather than it just being a result of who holds the bottle.

I was expecting something more extreme, like body modifications for instance.

Definitely enjoying THE WET SWIMSUIT CONTEST! But seriously, I don’t think they’re out to destroy each other. The contest is about whose magic is strongest. The looser must be alive and conscious to know she’s beaten. Jeanie definitely won this round!

With one being a genie and the other being a witch.. it’s amusing how they think they’ll know the weaknesses of the others. First to fail was Sam.. now let’s see Jean’s failure.

One of the guys will reveal the not a witch/not a genie part.
Neil may ask Derrick if it was a bottle or lamp he found Sam in, and
Derrick won’t know what he’s talking about.

A continuous stream of water in the face like that? How long was it meant to continue, until the target collapsed from being unable to breathe?

    March 14, 2014, 6:54 pm | # | Reply

Aren’t witches supposed to be water-averse? The Wicked Witch in Oz may be an extreme case, but I seem to recall there’s quite a lot of folklore that witches do not do well when confronted with water.

Of course, nothing of the sort applies to genies.

      *sigh* “water-averse”, not “adverse”.

Also, see this entry at the Straight Dope:

It seems to me that if witches were so water averse, Sam wouldn’t have been shopping for a swim suit and dueling at the beach.

        March 15, 2014, 4:22 pm | # | Reply

My guess is that she’s not a wicked witch (a little nasty maybe) so she’s not “dried up”, as some suggest. In Bewitched, I believe Sam used the kitchen sink.

      • refugee
        March 15, 2014, 9:08 pm | # | Reply

Point, especially about not being wicked.

Maybe, though, aversion is kinda reflexive. Kinda like skydiving. Really invigorating to overcome your natural fear of falling, but you still take a deep breath before you go. I expect that even if you’re wearing a chute, and get pushed out of the plane unexpectedly, it takes a moment or two to orient and deploy.

Or, even for a good witch, a flood like what’s being deployed here may interfere with her ability to do magic, which is, after all, the point of the duel.

I’ll also note that swimsuits aren’t just for swimming. And the beach is a nice, big, flat area with nothing combustible to hand, you know, for the safety of bystanders.

But you’re probably right: this is nothing more than an opening move, a distraction.

      • Gladsong
        March 15, 2014, 11:30 pm | # | Reply

Yeah, I know about women and swimsuits, bikinis especially! I don’t think either one of them planned on getting wet. I mean, Jeanie, what’s with the sweat pants and cap? (although she left the cap on when surfing around the beginning of the strip). And Sam? The only thing that seems to be melting is her ego! BTW, I was watching a few more episodes of Bewitched, and Samantha told her mother that she’s going to take a bath. I guess being doused with water isn’t an issue, unless, of course, if she catches a cold. What chaos happens when a witch sneezes!?

Most likely the guys will figure this out before the women. Then either get caught in the crossfire or let the duel run its course. I hope one of them put up some sort of perception filter so the mortals don’t pay any attention to what’s going on.

Of course, there’s also the possibility that after a few moments of concern, they’ll realize that neither girl is going to hurt the other, and just lean back and enjoy the show.

Until they get bored and start talking about something else entirely. What will the girls do when they realize the guys aren’t paying attention to them?

    Telling the opponent how best to defeat your own style of magic is… not that smart, Mrs. Witch. ^^;
