Jeanie

Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office. On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.

What’s keeping her from giving him the same treatment the Greek boat people got without the gold fish?

Can’t Jeannie just poof to Vegas anytime she wants to? Or anytime Neil wishes?

Of course she can, but has Jean actually worked that out? Obviously not, Jean is pretty … er… “straightforward” or “immediate” in her thinking (I think is the best terms).

@Riniko: Then he wouldn’t get to accompany him to Vegas.

I feel sorry for the boss if he gets too frisky. Or worse, uses the phrase I wish and Jeanie decides to grant the wish.

Wouldn’t count unless the guy has Jean’s bottle. However if he gets too frisky she’s still “free” to put the magic whammy on him

It’s not the boss, it’s Roger who wants the date with Jean and is threatening to tell the boss about Neil letting unauthorized “girlfriends” come into the office, which is a big no-no since some of the stuff they work on is national-security related and requires a government security clearance to be allowed to see. Worst case scenario, Neil not only gets fired, but he gets charged with Espionage as well for letting a “clearly foreign” unauthorized person view “national secrets” (i.e. anything with a “classified” stamp on it, no matter how trivial).

Not to mention, the security staff take some heat for either permitting unauthorized people to enter unregistered, or not paying attention when they are on duty. Being fired sucks. Getting other people fired is atrocious (except maybe when poetically justified).

…to echo Jeannie… he wants what? And he’s threatening to fire him over this?

      March 5, 2013, 3:36 am | # | Reply

No, Roger wants the date with Jean, and he has blackmail material that can get Neil fired if Roger does not get his way.

Why doesn’t Neil just wish the guy forgot he ever saw Jean in the first place?

I’m pretty sure that a memory wipe falls under “mind control”, which is strictly forbidden, as evidenced by what happened when Jean tried to force the cheerleader to like Melvin.

Because that wouldn’t be funny. Remember ROger and Jean are living in a world where what they do is controlled by the Rule of Funny rather than actual logic.

I know Jean is pretty selfish, but surely even if she still were a guy she ought to be willing to fake her way through one “gay date” if her best friend’s job and livelihood was at risk. Most of the (het) guys I know would be willing to do that for their friends.

      March 6, 2013, 5:33 am | # | Reply

The situations a bit different here though. Its not “one gay date” to help your friend keep his job its “probably one semi-gay but officially straight since your a girl now rubbing that fact in date”. Three things you need to keep in mind with regards to her knee jerk reaction.

      1) She has only fairly recently been turned into a girl and has already had guys try to take advantage of her so she’s probably a little sensative in regards to being forced to go on a date with one. I mean the fisherman who tried to make her a dutiful wife was what 1 day ago? and thinking she was trapped in a bottle alone for the uknown future 2?

      2) When it comes to blackmail when you give in once they usually keep asking for more.

      3) Jeannie is selfish but like I said this is her initial knee-jerk reaction to being asked to go out on a date with a guy (other than her master who she’s already given hints she wouldn’t be adverse to) and not necessarily her final reaction. Given that he played directly on her “i know you like this button” she may have come round after she calmed down.

With regards to your friends ask yourself would they (a) agree to said date when you asked them or would there be a protest/explosion first before they agreed and (b) would their reaction be the same if instead of a pretend gay date they were going on a date with someone blackmailing you as a woman?

#2 is actually a big concern to me. I’m not surprised Neil wasn’t smart enough to come up with a cover story. Hell the easiest response would have been “So you’re saying you think that our security is so bad that two random women can walk into the building undetected multiple times and that’s more likely than they didn’t like the look of the badge and put them in a purse/pocket? And you’re willing to go to our manager claiming you saw these women and that you didn’t see any badges on them? Ok, let’s see if he believes you or security.”

The blackmail angle is also bad because while Neil is presenting it as “just a date” a blackmailer is almost always going to escalate it. No sex? Well then I’ll just get Neil fired. Fortunately for Jean, magic powers come in handy and Jean does NOT like getting pushed around like that. I’m almost hoping this is where the plot goes because Jean’s solution would almost certainly result in a permanent end to any blackmail attempts on Neil.

In the original, Roger was in on the secret of the genie, so it’s interesting that this version’s Roger isn’t, at least not yet.

I vagely recall that Roger didn’t find out the secret till part way into the first season. Considering this is essentially day 3 or 4 since her change (not sure about schooltime) he may find out sooner or later.

Yes, Roger in the original TV series did not know about Jeanie’s real identity until at least part way through season 1, and maybe not until season 2.

I can imagine getting ready for the date.
Jean telling Neil that she is going to make Roger miserable and in an frustrated manner Neil says “I just wish you would show him a good time”
    or
Jean is getting ready to leave in a hoody and jeans and Neil says “I wish you would wear a sexy dress for Roger”, to which Jean gives him an earful and leaves – not realising what she is now wearing.

I’d have to go back and look to be sure, but I think Jeanie was only obligated to grant Neil’s first 3 wishes, which she has already done, so any more wish granting is at her discretion.

I think it was in the rule book Neil was reading in some early strips.

Its nice to see how easy it is to manipulate Jeanie, with a free trip to Vegas.

In the interest of “awwww” i meantime its a desire to spend time with Neil rather than a desire to spend time in Vegas that led to her agreement.

If Jean used her magic to make people unable to have children the people bomb problem would cease to exist.
