Jeanie

Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office. On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.

I don’t know who Holly is. But I have a feeling it’s the girl on the left with glasses.
Well that would be who I liked.

OK, I was wrong about Melvin’s crush on a teacher. Hmph.

But Critter: cute blonde with glasses, good call.

I tend to favor the red-head, because of framing, but OK. Doesn’t really matter.

What matters is “The Love Master”. Please oh please oh PLEASE let me be right about Jeanie just giving him a pep talk, just letting Melvin know that ninety percent of success is simply showing up; i.e., just chatting her up.

She can give him a bit magical glitter, a “glamour” as that kind of spell is known, but Melvin absolutely has to do this on his own.

I’m favoring the dark-skinned chick. Why? She’s facing the other way. We can now get the dramatic head spin and sparkle. 😛 Though at first I favored the red head (because like refugee said, framing)

We’re led to believe it’s the redhead due to the framing.
What if Jeannie guesses wrong and helps him to the
    wrong girl?

Obviously it’s not glasses-girl even though she might be a better choice. Note the lack of a bare midriff and tight jeans.

Too bad the glasses-girl isn’t the object of his affections.
Jeannie could curse her glasses with a “beer-goggle” effect
      that only works for Melvin.

Hmmmm… I remember something about a Jeanie not being able to make someone fall in love. I have a feeling we are going to see a major backfire or at least a rule violation. Then punishment. Hmmmm…

That rule also was in the motion picture
“The Man Who Could Work Miracles”
It was an adaptation of the HG Wells story.
‘Love’ wasn’t matter or energy and therefore was out of reach
of Mr. Fartinggays’ reality altering powers.

Key phrase: “The Love Master”. Pronounced, “LuUVe Mastah!”

I bet that’s how Jean thought of himself, a real player, and I bet he wasn’t far wrong.

No magic necessary: Melvin just needs a kick in the self-confidence.

I’m curious how you manage the “Can’t making people fall in love”-aspect in your stories. I have my own solution…

I really hope this is a sign that Jeanie is accepting being a girl. Please let it be so.

OH. MY GOD. Look at the image above the panels. Neil is a playboy bunny. What kind of torture is he going though….

        March 25, 2011, 7:49 am | # | Reply

Playboy bunnies didn’t have *real* rabbit ears like this one does. (I bet the tail is real, too.)

(When Neil got transformed into a stripper the first couple of times, his/her face didn’t look quite so much like Neil’s [or like a man’s]. As a bunny, Neil pretty much looks like himself. Artist artifact? Intentional? Meaningless?)

What does being a girl have to do with it?

      • Thomas
        March 27, 2011, 11:27 pm | # | Reply

It’s probably my deeply hidden prejudice that is coming out at this random moment. As in, “Jeanie setting up a guy with a girl means she’s acting more feminine.”

    March 25, 2011, 8:15 am | # | Reply

Unless our artist is being deliberately perverse, Holly is the redhead. She’s a cheerleader (like the black girl she’s talking to)–notice the uniforms. And Melvin knows she’s totally out of his league (or is it, he’s totally out of her league). But he can’t get over it (or her).

And I very much doubt that, notwithstanding Jean’s “Love Master” (shouldn’t it be “Mistress?”), _love_ is going to be involved in what Jean is up to. Lust, maybe. Teenage girls have been known to be boy-crazy, which doesn’t have much to do with love. As for teenage boys, well, is it necessary to say anything?

How about Jean changes the rules so that at this school, jocks aren’t the cool guys any more, nerds and geeks are? Suddenly, Holly wants desperately to hang around with Melvin and his pocket-protector-wearing pals, and she has to fight off all the other girls with the same idea…

Maybe Melvin turns out to have hidden values (or Jean gives him some). Ever wonder what Scooby-doo stories would be like if Velma got contacts and swapped the baggy orange sweaters for tight white ones? (Check out Linda Cardellini as Velma in the live-actor Scooby Doo films.) Melvin can’t remember working out, but he finds out when a bank of school lockers falls over, and he catches them before they crush Holly. Etc.

Here’s my thought: Holly is the girl with the glasses. Jean, being Jean, however … assumes that Holly is one of the cheerleaders and hijinks ensue when Melvin has to fend off a cheerleader he isn’t interested in – and possibly a jock or two with interest in said cheerleader.

“Jean, being Jean, however … assumes…”

I do like that idea, and it’s quite consistent with what we know of Jean’s character.

One of the nice things, though, about “The Love Master” simply giving Melvin advice is that he then gets to use it on whoever he wants.

But if Jeanie uses her powers, using them on the wrong target would be priceless.

The other potential problem rises if instead of magicking one of the girls, Jean gives Melvin a ‘glamour’ (as commented above) that, for instance, makes him irresistible to girls…

…while forgetting that she, herself, counts as a girl right now, too… ^.~

Just to be different, I’ll guess that Holly’s the girl on the right with a brown ponytail and pink pants. She seems to be going to her locker which is the sort of thing that would happen regularly at the same time and place.

as long as she does the write thing she should be fine, but the magical world is going to get into some deep sh-t for interfearing with the affairs of mortals and will more then likely have there entire orginization shut down once word gets out the they foricively transformed a human male into a female genie and the proceeded to subject him/her to various tortirous task

Not that it has anything specific to do with this particular strip, or even the whole of the strip – but it is about genies: http://xkcd.com/879/

I suspect that the framing is Jean’s perspective, which of those girls would the old he go after. And she’s now going to make the worst mistake any magic user possibly could. 😀

    Lo-o-o-o-o-ove it.
