Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
She could have teleported themselves to an alternate plane of reality with the weak GPS signal simply being a remnant from the prime (??) plane of reality.
You could’ve just said you don’t know how GPS works. Actually, there is no way the GPS signal would be weaker than usually either unless they did something to the satellites on orbit, so CD might not know how GPS works either …
Most phones will look to cell towers first, as GPS will fail in many locations. (Indoors, near large buildings, ect.). So technically Jeanie is using “GPS” incorrectly. But it isn’t reasonable to expect most people to know the difference. “Location Services” is the correct term, but sounds like marketing speak.
Actually all modern cell phones (android and iPhone) have built in an A-GPS chip, but not all models make use of it. DuckDuckgo is your friend. So, it is perfectly reasonable for Jeanie’s phone to be using GPS.
Since iPhone 14, a user could send an emergency SOS text message via GPS, and now with the iPhone 16, they can send GPS text messages whenever they want if they opt-in (extra charge) to it with their provider.
So, this leads to the obvious question, where does Hadji’s palace appear on the map?
Jean is using GPS correctly. When Jean says “the signal’s week” she’s referring to the phone signal, not the GPS signal. I don’t know of any phone that displays the GPS signal, though I am sure there are apps for that. That’s because there’s no need to display the strength of the GPS signals, you couldn’t do anything with that information if you had it. But the phone signal strength is important and has been prominently displayed on every phone I’ve ever had. An accurate GPS position with a weak phone signal weak is exactly what you’d expect to find offshore, which is where they appear to be.
Okay… so… it is the worst case scenario. The most important thing to do in this situation is work out whose fault this is… and it’s Jeannie. Of course. She’s done worse so she can take the hit.
Next thing to do is make the problem disappear. I suggest wiping the memory of anyone who thought a city was there. That will cover things up easy enough. Maybe quickly cover the area in ocean to put it under water.
Then we all go home and never speak of this again.
… or I suppose they could try to fix it. Trouble is we’re talking serious psychological and economic issues. Wherever the city is… do they even have electricity?
Jeanie asked Ifta to make the sugar disappear. Perhaps she did just that with an invisibility field that surrounds their location in the diner, with a side effect that they can’t see the city around them. It might also be affecting her cell phone signal.
Okay for now on Alya doesn’t try to comfort others for obvious reasons. Love the Jean banner.
I was about to say the same thing. “Alya, please stop being helpful.”

They ARE in downtown Miami–fifty years in the future when it’s all under water. 🙂
HAH! Could be.
Funny how that is the hopeful senario.
Robert, in Panel 4, it says, “into into”.
Ack! Those repetition typos around linebreaks are ALWAYS hard to spot. And of course, Photoshop hasn’t got a Grammar Checker. >_<
Gasp! I didn’t WANT to be right!
GPS signal comes from satellites, not local (unless.augmented for some purpose). So it shouldn’t be attenuated.

Oh, that makes sense.
Weak phone signal is also what you expect if you disappeared several cell towers around.
Maybe it’s just invisible now.
Jeanie, for us guys on New Years , plaese take a deep breath and hold it. Alya, we love you but you are not helping.
It is a nice looking outfit, and I’d be interested in seeing her standing while wearing it.
Same!

Aya! Not helping!
WAAAAAAAH! What? I’m trying to support her.
They’d better go and find the city before someone notices its missing.
