Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
A junior engineer working for a small engineering firm in Cocoa Beach. The firm focuses mostly on NASA projects.
Neil is Jean’s best friend. When Jean was turned into a genie, Neil became Jeanie’s master.
I wonder how this will effect Neil and Jeanie’s future, as well as the rest of the story going forward? Now that they realize they ended up bringing themselves to prom….
Unless Jeanie wipes the memory of the event when they return to the future, then its going to be very awkward for Neil to remember this.
Why? Young Neil and Jean never knew exactly who those beautiful girls were. When they return to their own time they will then realize they took themselves to the Prom. Before “now” they never knew the truth.
I think this is a…Pre-Destination Paradox? Or Grandfather Paradox? This was likely how it always happened, so really the timeline isn’t messed with, it’s flowing the way that it should.
Unless, of course, we eventually DO see a blonde foreign exchange girl standing alone in the school hallway looking very sad. In which case the timeline was indeed messed with. But I get the feeling it’s going to be a case of ‘this is how it always happened’.
Cal it the Marty McFly Effect. It’s the same thing as Marty suggesting the black kid in the soda shop that he could run for mayor, when that same kid, now grown WAS the mayor before Marty left for 1955. And the same effect as Marvin Barry, after hearing Marty’s wild new rock and roll licks telephoning his cousin Chuck Barry who was looking for a new sound for his own music. It’s the action of a time traveler doing something that seems like a change but that actually creates the world the time traveler knew.
The answer you’re looking for is ‘Stable-time loop’. You can’t go back and change the past because changing the past caused the past. It’s kinda like the opposite of a Grandfather Paradox. Where time is ruined because you didn’t travel through time.
Sage does make a good point, though. Jean will realize, after having lived it a second time, that he took himself to prom. And this his prom date had always *been* himself. And he was perhaps even responsible for his own change from a “dweeb” into a “player”. Maybe that’ll jog loose some decency out of his douchey brain.
We’re not sure yet how Natalie will play into this, either… Could be quite important.
@Pilgrim: We’re not even sure there is a relationship between Zoe and Neil for Jeanie to mess up, except for Jean’s offhand remark about what might happen afterward (and we know that he’s a jerk with a jerk’s sense of humor). Nothing in past episodes mentions anything about Neil’s prom night date, at least nothing that I can recall.
Its entirely possible that Natalie will be the prom’s wall flower since she has a male’s memories and inhibitions, watching everything unfold around her as Jeanie tries to steer events the way Jean remembered them
There may not be much of a relationship there between Neil and Zoe, but, there is enough of a relationship there that Zoe at least alluded to the idea of Neil taking her to the Prom. There is at least of relationship there on some level, which will probably get trashed when Jeanie come barging with Natalie and Zoe will probably get pushed to the side and now young Neil need a Prom date too.
If you re read Zoe’s dialogue you’ll note that she doesn’t actually say that she’s looking forward to prom with Neil. Jean alludes to Neil and Zoe being a couple, but it isn’t actually acknowledged by either of them.
Mike this is one of those, you have to read between the line when Zoe look at Neil and blushes red and tell Neil that tomorrow night is Prom Night. That she is trying to give Neil idea’s of taking her to the Prom without trying to be to forward about asking Neil to take her to the Prom. Also as you say, Jean referred to them as a couple. They have the some kind of relationship that Melvin has with Holly, it kind of is and it kind of isn’t at the same time.
Having Jeanie, the pretty exchange student as his date, gave everybody at the school — INCLUDING jean — the idea that he was a player. That’s what started him off on his life of lechery.
Well, I was saying way back when, that Jeanie is most likely the exchange student and now it look like she is. It pretty well sealed and locked now, that Jeanie is the exchange student here.
What we don’t know yet is how much Genie magic that Jeanie used on Jean to create the reality that Jeanie remembers from her younger teen years and how much that Jean himself mentally blocked out himself because, the experience was so horrible to himself that he didn’t want to remember. But, now we are getting the straight dope as to what really happened. But, now we have to see how the story is either twisted or get twisted into the reality that both Jeanie and Neil remembered to have happened.
Did Jean have to become Jeanie so she could great the future that she remember and that would not only en clued Prom, but, the rest of Jean future self too. Did Jeanie set the teen Jean on the path of not only being his teen Prom girl, but, launched him into his future career too or at least started him in that direction at least. an was obviously playing a part of Jean past history too. Up to now, Jeanie has had only Jean memory of what happened up to now. If Jeanie made the history that she remembers, then Jeanie is going to have to figure out that she was the one that directed those events to make what Jean remembered happen to happen the way that Jean remembered it.
It like one of those self fulling Prophesies that magically come true.
Jeanie memory or perception as to what happened in the past, may change now that she knows the truth, but, yes, actual time-loop is stable and hasn’t or isn’t going to change.
And if something was going to change the time-loop, it already happened and they are just satisfying the current time-loop that there are currently living in.
hopefully this will finally deflate Jean’s ego when she realizes that yep, she took herself to the prom, and good old human self-serving memory kicked in and bias recollection made him remember things in a way that protected him from being emotionally harmed (which is what our self-serving memory serves as). Her style of winning ladies has (almost) never worked.
Actually Jean’a style allowed him to bed a significant number of ladies.
The fact none of those ladies have anything good to say about him, to the point of making a web page to warn other women about him, is another separated issue.
The reason all those women reacted the way they did could be any one of three things:
* His seduction technique (“If I tell you that you’ve got a beautiful body will you hold it against me?),
* His sexual technique (Wham! Bam! Thank you, Ma’m), or
* His “follow-through” (Here’s five bucks for cab fair,… umm, what did you say your name was?).
Any of those are possible (I personall would gues #3), and none could be traced to his sudden success with that “foreign exchange student” in high school.
“If I tell you that you’ve got a beautiful body will you hold it against me?” and other similar jokes might’ve been quite good techniques BEFORE they were repeated so much …
In the second panel, Jennie says: “This isn’t how it happened.”. While Jennie could be misremembering it, I highly doubt it. Does this mean she has already changed that timeline? And what will this do to the future? I have a theory, what if Natalie is the one that turns into a genie because of what Jennie has done to that timeline? The plotline just too simple to be a replay of the past. I have been following CD Rudd’s series since it was on another website and I never believe they would make it this simple.
Actually, the time line has already been changed. In the original time line, there wasn’t an exchange student there for Jean to go out with, which is what Jeanie remembered when she was still Jean the high school student that ended up going out with a Blond exchange student that Jeanie remembered out with. You see Stacie Meier, Jeanie was and is the exchange student that she remembered going out with when she was Jean. The reason that Jeanie doesn’t remember it as Jeanie, is that it hasn’t happened yet in her time line and is about to happen in her time line now.
We are dealing with two time line here. We are dealing with the original time line before Jeanie changed it and the time line that Jeanie remembers after she changed it by becoming Jean Blond exchange Prom Girl.
In last weeks edition of Jeanie Bottle, Neil advances the fear of changing time line. Well, it already been done and you can stop worrying about it now Neil. Jeanie is now creating the time line that she remembered that happened.
Assuming time is linear, Jean progressed through time normally, attending prom with a blond transfer student, moving to Coco Beach, finding the bottle and becoming Jeanie. The linear time line continues until Jeanie gets it into her head to get burgers, leaving the “present” and visiting her old high school where she becomes the transfer student “Jean” remembers (probably because that’s what she will tell him she is… the girl with the weird last name (page 625)). Things will progress as intended until Jeanie poofs them both back into the “present” and all will be well.
If time is NOT linear and resembles more of infinite decision points radiating into their own realities, then if Jeanie changes something they will not return to the “present” but to an “alternate present” and all bets are off. It may be 99.99% identical, but that .01% could be very, very interesting. This is the Back to the Future scenario, where something changed in the past but the “present” was almost normal.
As you say, there still was a minor change to the future that Marty Mcfly returned to. But, the future that Jeanie remembers is, the future that she creating now, because, that the one that she remembers as being the true future and that will probably be the only one that she will accept too.
But, the original past that he or she or by Genie power of the Genie Blink is in the process of being changed right now to probably be forced to Jeanie idea of what the future will be and we are going to see how it going to get changed right now too. How much it get changed, don’t know. But, in either reality, Jean will get transformed into Jeanie, but, it only following a different time line to get there. Jean will still be going to Cocoa Beach to be with Neil and he will still be picking up the Genie Bottle and he will still be the one that turn’s into Jeanie lookalike Genie from the old TV series.
That the point Robert, Jean would not know that it a lie until he is turned into a she and a Genie to tell that lie to himself six or seven year ago as she does her time travel number. Up until a few minutes ago, Jeanie was still looking for the Blond exchange girl that Jean went out with and still not understanding that she was the Blond exchange girl that Jean went out with to the school Prom. Jean can’t very well tell her younger male self that in the future he going to be turned into a female Genie called Jeanie in a spiting image of Barbra Eden in almost the exact roll that she played as Jeanie.
Jeanie can tell him that or should not tell him that and it will cause a major problem. So Jeanie going to have to lie to him as in, I am an exchange student and I am just passing through here. Would you like to go to the school with me? And that what Jean going to remember as to what really happened in the past until he show up as Jeanie does this number. Up to this point, Jeanie isn’t going to know what really happened in the past, because has the memories of Jean and not her future self that being his date for the Prom.
If CD Rudd, really want to get creative and off beat here, he could be running two time line out here that run into each other and which time line end up being the true history of what happened in the past. Like Paramount and Television Network got into a fight with each other Star Trek, so one of them created Kelvin time line Star Trek Universe. We start off with Jeanie from the two time going into the past. We have the original Jeanie and we have our Jeanie from the Kelvin time line Jeanie Universe.
1. In the original Universe, Jean is a bum and nothing good come of him. Without what Jeanie and what she is getting ready do, he never get that review job for other people work job and he is basically just another Rodge because of it. We have have the original Jeanie trying to undo being being a Genie. He still friend with Neil and he finally wonder to Cocoa Beach where he hook up with Neil in Cocoa Beach an he still become Jeanie, but, it just isn’t the same. We basically get to see what happens if Jeanie doesn’t become a Genie and doesn’t change the past or even the prospect of Neil having to become a Genie even. Everything get all messed up in this time line as to what we know happened.
2. Now we have the Kelvin time line that our Jeanie comes from, the one that just wanted some burgers with Neil in tow. She run into the other Jeanie from the other time line and now our Jeanie has to straighten everything out go get back to her reality that she came from. CD Rudd can both explore different possibilities of what could or would happen by going into an alternate past and then come back to the past that Jeanie remembers.
Natalie should come up with a different last name for this adventure (and she’s an engineer, so she should be smart enough to realize the implications of Neal Anton meeting Natalie Anton and trying to explain the coincidence.
Lord, keeping the he’s and she’s straight is giving me a headache.
@ Larry: Precisely my point. The fact that Jean met what he believed to be a blond transfer student and took her to prom then went about his life and opened that bottle, all the while believing that Jeanie was that transfer student up until the moment Jeanie actually intervened after Rita dumped Jean… this all falls into place as a linear progression in which nothing changes… all that happened, happened exactly as intended. A closed loop.
Only if Jeanie tells Jean the truth, and ONLY if that happens, will the time line change and become a radial progression with an alternate “present” for Neil and Jeanie.
Regardless of whatever time line develops (or continues) Jeanie is still going to be Jeanie because she already opened the bottle and was transformed. Jean being forewarned to NOT open the bottle will not change that from her point of view, and the two time lines will simply go their separate ways.
Right. As indicated in the note which appeared in the bottle where Neil had wished that Jean had never opened the bottle, it is not possible for Genie magic to change the past in ways that would create Grandfather Paradoxes.
What’ll be fun is if Jeanie ignores genie law and tries to prevent Jean from ever finding the bottle so he can’t open it, so that he’ll never become a genie. But then it turns out that he wasn’t going to find the bottle in the first place. And it’s only due to Jeanie’s interference that he ended up finding and opening the bottle, and becoming a genie.
You still didn’t explain why there wasn’t a Blond exchange girl in the original time line before Jeanie became a Genie six or seven years into the future. Let use the Back to the Future as our example:
1. Marty goes back into the past and interfere with his parent first meeting with each other.
2. Marty has to repair the damage to the time so that they can fall in love and have three children.
3. In the process of doing that, Marty causes minor changes to the time that he came from.
We now have the Jeanie Bottle time travel time line or two time lines to deal with.
1. In both time lines, Neil becomes an engineer and get employed at small engineering firm that does contract work for NASA. So Neil moves to Cocoa Beach to take that job. In both time lines Jean is a jerk and his only friend that he can call a friend is Neil, so he move to Cocoa Beach to be close to his friend. Ms Eden is still the apartment manager and is the former Rouyaa Genie and her former master was still the one that died in the apartment that Ms Eden had to discount so that she could rent it to Jean, because, nobody else wanted it. Both Neil and Jean watched the TV series I dream of Jeannie marathon last month and they still went to pond shop or antic dealer and Jean still picked up the Genie Bottle while talking about have sex with Barbra Eden, which is what turned him into a look alike Barbra Eden Genie type Genie.
2. The only thing that changed between the two time line is weather Jean doesn’t got on the school Prom night or weather he goes out with a mysterious blond exchange girl that just happen to show up at the last moment to say the day for Jean.
3. The only thing that can not change is, Jean being transformed into Jeanie six or seven years into the future. If Jeanie does anything more than go out with Jean and does try to warn him not to pick up the Genie Bottle because he will turn into a Genie, it will cause problems just like Back to the Future did for Marty. If that happens, then Jeanie going to have to do a repair number for her past too, just like Marty had to repair his time lime too. I think that where this story line is going. There can be minor alteration in the original story line, but, at the end of the day, Neil still has to be an engineer who live in Cocoa beach and Jean has to be transformed into Jeanie who is a Genie.
You are correct, in the IDOAJB Universe that rule has been established.
But it is kind of fun to think of a plot where Jeannie somehow managed to warn Jean.
And when the poof back to the current time we have Jean with a blonde jeannie Natalie by his side.
If Jeanie is allready pregnant with the little sparklie thingie from Guano, then she cannot get pregnant again.
But then you can never tell with our girl.
Called it Jean was his own date to the prom now what about Neil prom date and Natalies.
I love forward to seeing what Jeanie chooses to wear. And inevitably gives to Natalie to wear. 🙂
Wow, that jean has already picked up the hottest blonde in school.
I wonder how this will effect Neil and Jeanie’s future, as well as the rest of the story going forward? Now that they realize they ended up bringing themselves to prom….
Unless Jeanie wipes the memory of the event when they return to the future, then its going to be very awkward for Neil to remember this.

There’s plenty of room for more douchey-ness if Jean pairs Natalie with Neil and messes up his relationship with Zoe.

Ellie: I would say #2, given that Belle enjoyed sex with Neil-as-Jean much more than with Jean himself.
If Jeanie has sex with Jean, shouldn’t it technically be considered masturbation? 🙂
You went there?
Are you jealous he posted about it before you?
its the same question as whether killing yourself counts as suicide or murder.
It doesn’t have an answer, because its a contradiction.
No, no, No, NO, NO! He went with SEX!
IMHO no, because Jeanie is not “synced” with Jean – they are not same person, although Jeanie WAS Jean.
The usual term for that is “selfcest”.
Dagor, you beat me to it!
I bow to thee!
more time loop as to why you remember things differently
I think you might have got a typo, I assume “scatch that” was meant to be “scratch that”.
Also, Natalie’s profile picture is missing again.
Fear not. Mr. Peabody and his boy Sherman will show up to correct the timie loop. And have a really bad one liner at the end.
Didn’t I see something like this in “The Man Who Folded Himself?”
Or from Heinlein’s much older “All You Zombies.”
Jack Chalker’s “Downtiming the Nightside”, which was written as a less implausible response to Heinlein’s rather flippant take on the concept.
I did not see that coming. Although if I think about it, it fits perfectly with the story.

That’s true, I went back and looked and sure enough, it has changed. TY for the reply.
> While Jennie could be misremembering it, I highly doubt it.
I don’t. I think she’s badly misremembering this incident, because Jean built his whole personality around the lie that Jeanie just told.
I think that the anti-paradox thing is less Genie law and more Cosmic law—in other words, it’s not forbidden but rather is impossible.
I really like the new sidebar.
CD worked really hard an updating that. I’m so glad you like it. 🙂
Just tweeked it (Upgrading it again).
Can you spot the difference?
Wouldn’t Sailor Sun fall in the completed category?
I tried really hard but I couldn’t spot it. I should have saved the older pictures.
It’s my comic & website, I can put it where I want. 😉
The new difference, is when you hover over, the update status wipes from the edge out.
Scatch?
Would be even creepier if he had sex with himself and got knocked up…
That would be Heinlein’s “All you zombies'”
If Jeanie is allready pregnant with the little sparklie thingie from Guano, then she cannot get pregnant again.
But then you can never tell with our girl.
It is implied Jeanie took Lahab’s “offer”, didn’t she? So she is meant to become Guano’s first in the (maybe) distant future.
I like how this is all coming together.
