Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
A junior engineer working for a small engineering firm in Cocoa Beach. The firm focuses mostly on NASA projects.
Neil is Jean’s best friend. When Jean was turned into a genie, Neil became Jeanie’s master.
It seems someone (Jean) was not remembering things the way they happened, and now the truth will be reveled. Will Jeanie mind be able to handle the truth?
So has Jean been telling the like about how he was the one who dumped Rita for so long she’s actually come to believe it? Well, maybe, but this is a timey-wimey story where there are different timelines, so perhaps this isn’t quite the same past?
@Robert (but not Robert Robert?) Well, whoever you are, there were a lot of different timelines in CDs finished series Sailorsun.org, including three different and co-existing versions of the main character by the end. All of them appeared in an arc called “Timey-Wimey”.
While it’s a nice twist to find Jean getting dumped, it really doesn’t fit the player he clearly was in I Dream of Verisimilitude, going through so many women he started a website dedicated to warning other women what a creep he really was. The only other time in the whole series where Jean showed any doubts about his mastery of women was in I Dream of Green Eyes when she discovered Neil playing his part was better in bed with Belle.
Jean and Neil don’t seem to have done anything that could have changed how Jean remembers what happened between himself and red-headed Rita (Perhaps a callback to a rather famous redheaded Rita who went by “Hayworth”, her mother’s maiden name. Real name: Margarita Carmen Cansino). In fact, for Jean to go from the dweeb who didn’t know the popular girl was leading him on to the Menace to All Womankind he became, it almost seems like something magical must have happened…
@Tom Yeah, but from very early now, it has been establish or at least implied, that the time travel rule set in Jeanie Bottle works differently than the one in Sailor Sun.org… or at the very least, Genie Time Travel Magic works differently than time portals.
So far, it seems all the events are already set in stone in this timeline, any action Jeanie and Neil make in the past has already affected their future. Actually, either their Cameo in a Dream of Technicolor, or the jocks who were sent to Day D, were already a clue on how time travel is different in JB than it is in SS.org. When Sometime, anything, even paper, time travels to the past in SS.org, the current timeline is “erase”, or at least morph into a new one that follows the events of the new past. Going back to the jocks at the beach, as insignificant as it may seem, the moment Jeanie poof them back into the present, prove how the time travel works different here. Their actions in the past didn’t affect the present, they “always” were at the beach in Normandy that day.
And from there, more clues as to how time travel works here is how Jeanie and Neil are responsible from the restaurant closing down, or how Jeanie does in fact has memories of “Jeanie Bottle”, vague as they may be. Because all of this already happen.
Jean is one of those guys that so into himself that anything that doesn’t conform to his own selfish self interest he will blot out of his mind. This could be the real truth of what really happened, because, everybody else would have known that Jean was a jerk including Rita and it was Rita that dumped Jean instead. Remember that Jeanie is remembering it from Jean vantage point and not from Jeanie vantage point. When Jean get dumped Jeanie go over there to comfort him and she identifies herself as the Blond foreign exchange student that Jean remembers going out with. So it Jeanie is looking around for that foreign exchange student that went out with Jean, she won’t see her, because, that foreign student is her.
So yes, they did change the past, but, it the past that they remember or that kind of resemble the past that they told us in the future from where they came from.
Jean had given every indication of being an insecure narcissist who can’t handle rejection. So of course he would choose to remember this differently. He may be convinced of his own mastery of women but he’s also proven to mostly be a legend in his own mind. It’s possible he’s convinced himself he’s a player rather than face the reality that he isn’t.
Jean future self as Jeanie is a Genie too and she could also have played a part in changing Jean memory too by doing the Genie blink on him to change his memory also. So the history that they told us is the way that they remembered it, but, it doesn’t necessarily mean that that the way that it really happened. So there could be some variation to what we were told and what really happened in the past. But, if Jeanie is the foreign exchange student, she doesn’t get those memories until today, because, because, this is when she goes through the experience of being the foreign exchange student. So she doesn’t have those memories yet.
This reminds me of Harry Potter waiting for his dad to rescue him – finally he realizes he’s got to rescue himself. Jeannie will jump in when she realizes there’s no exchange student…
I think we’ll see Jeannie try to correct things so they match her memories, with “playah” Jean being the result. My guess is that Natalie will end up being the exchange student because Jeannie loves to change her. Asian Natalie anyone?
Jean memory was that the Foreign exchange student was Blond. So best bet is that the Foreign exchange student of a European decent that is Blond. So it will probably be either Jeanie jumping into it to save the day for Jean or she turned Neil Blond and uses him as the foreign exchange student. either way would work out and correct the time line as both Jean and Neil remember it.
High school can be so cruel. I mostly dislike time travel stories because, well , the impossibility of the concept. As a life long SF aficionado I’m well used to suspending my disbelief but I’ve found that most time travel stories and shows are very poorly thought out, written and riddled with paradoxes. The Star Trek universe is a prime example of this. That said, there are a few TT gems out there, of which “The Technicolor Time Machine” is my favorite as it makes a point of explaining paradoxes and dealing with them. Then there is H. G. Wells classic. The only TT concept that I have no problem with is going into the future via relativistic light speed time dilation. Heinlein did that best with his “Time for the Stars”. So far JB seems to be consistent in dealing with paradoxes.
I don’t mind time travel stories in deterministic universes, that is, where the past can’t be changed because it already happened, always resulting in a loop (this is also what modern science says would happen with time travel, assuming it’s actually possible of course)
Unfortunately these are hard to write while keeping any kind of suspense, not impossible, but if the ending is already known to the readers, the writer has their work cut out for them
Hxxl has no fury like a woman scorned and now that Neil knows the truth what will our girl do to Rita. I am starting to think of Stevens Kings Carrie on prom night. Call the medics.
What if Jean does become The Prom Date? And what if Jeanie remembers… having a *WONDERFUL* (ahem) time afterward? Heading into Heinlein territory, folks!
Actually, I am rooting for Jeanie to become the exchange student Prom girl that Jean remembers dating. I see Jeanie getting frustrated that the Blond exchange student that she remember dating when she was Jean, was actually her doing a Genie time travel thing. But, since it was in her future and not her past, she would not remember the date that she had with Jean and it would be all new to her too.
Like you said, if Jeanie like it, she may actually start venturing into that area now too with Neil in tow.
So, how could Jean ever forget what really happened on prom day+night?
How indeed. My bet is on Jeannie, she will not have wanted to have sex with her yucky old self, so she will have danced with him once, then will have changed his entire memories so he will have thought he got lucky on prom night after dumping Rita – but will have kept fuzzy on the details. Which is why (s)he will have remained eager to time-travel and learn what it was all about.
So Jean was not big man on campus like he said. Also what could change Neil becomes the genie?
Seems like Neil will be going out with Natalie for the upcoming Jean and Jeannie prom.
They both date their past male selves . . .
An April 1st Update? I’d be Foolish not to be excited about that. XP
someone’s heart has just been broken
and their ego on the floor
Oh Jeanie, so oblivious

Are there different timelines? I got the impression that there weren’t, based on what we saw in the restaurant.

So is it Jean or is it Nat who is the exchange student? Place your bets.
The exchange student is blond, but that’s an issue that’s easy enough for Jeanie to arrange.
I think we’ll see Jeannie try to correct things so they match her memories, with “playah” Jean being the result. My guess is that Natalie will end up being the exchange student because Jeannie loves to change her. Asian Natalie anyone?

Can you file a breach of promise suit over breaking a prom date?
After teen-Natalie fears upsetting the timeline her hormones make her jump on teen-Neil? Is THAT Thursday?

Oblivious, thy name is Jeannie.
I can appreciate a good greek tragedy when I see one. Bravo for making this less, “My own wife.” and more “Narcissus and the mirror.”
Since Jeanie did not remember being the exchange student, my bet is on a Blonde Natalie with a sexy little French assent.
Hxxl has no fury like a woman scorned and now that Neil knows the truth what will our girl do to Rita. I am starting to think of Stevens Kings Carrie on prom night. Call the medics.

Why do I feel like I know who that exchange student is? xD
Rita looks somewhat like a younger Frankie Foster from Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends lol.
Could also be the red head Jeanie had in mind when she made Red a girl, or at least her more recent design portrayal in Melvin Chronicles.
jean is the mysrerius exchange student from prom.
Jean birthday suit for his birthday?
someone doesn’t remember things correctly
… … … … … … … oh yeah …
