Chapter: Story 09: I Dream of Technicolor
So you think you’re genre-savvy, Sid? I wonder if you’re right…
So you think you’re genre-savvy, Sid? I wonder if you’re right…
Oooh! Sid is genie genre-savvy!
Of course, that didn’t work out so well for Boss Hogg…
This again? It’s not always the genie’s fault when a wish backfires, especially when the genie forcefully has to make the wish work somehow. How well the wishes turn out depends on two things: How the wisher phrase their words and how the wish-granter interprets their meaning. You can’t assume that genies are always up-to-date with the current events or the latest social trends or the newest slangs/jargons/vocabulary. How come people can’t understand that Genies can miss out on those things when they get enclosed for decades at a time?
Personally if this were ever to happen to me in real life, I would explain why I would want my wishes granted this way or that and asks how the genie plans on granting them. Just to help clear up any possible misunderstands before executing them. Similar to a designer and an art director’s collaboration.
I agree with you, Jenny the genie
You’re forgetting that the genie (the slave of the lamp) has to have a reason to want to actually be helpful to the master of the lamp. It doesn’t matter how much you want to collaborate or want to avoid misunderstandings if the genie is more interested in causing trouble for you, and even if you explain or talk it over in advance, there’s no guarantee they won’t grant your wish in a way you didn’t expect.
Let me give an example. Let’s say your mother was in a burning building, and you wished to have her saved from it. Now, the genie is forbidden to use solutions that kill your mother, but your mother could come out of the building comatose. Or crippled for life. Or with amnesia. Or disfigured for life. Or..
It doesn’t matter how clever you are, because there’s always a way to twist a wish. Slaves generally have no reason to make things easy for their masters and every reason to cause trouble for them.
That’s understandable. With it being with a genie or a normal person, you wouldn’t want to ask for help from or even force someone that appears cold-hearted or have no interest of caring about others. They’re built as diversely as we are and if our roles were reversed, we would likely be resentful and become bitter about the predictameant being stuck as capsulated slaves too.
If I would have to ask for a genie’s help, I would first figure out from their body language and facial expressions what they’re like or ask upfront if they would actually want to grant wishes for me. Gauging by how they sound and act would give me the answer there.
I do not doubt that he might wish for a “girlfriend”… It seems to be almost a rule that there must be genderbending every few pages.
Sid certainly seems genre-savvy. Rouyaa is a fish out of temporal water and seems to not be in any hurry to make wishes. I think Rouyaa could be an honest genie, but would screw up their wishes due to cultural and era differences.
Yes, she does seem to be well-meaning, so she would at least try to give Andy what he asks for if it is not against the rules, but given that this is a comedy series, there is always room for error (see Araceli and the “hot dog” bit).
Nnnoooot an entirely unreasonable concern. ^_^;
I’m assuming at least one of the wishes will eventually involve success in Hollywood.
She has been cooped up in a bottle for six decades, so before making any wishes, take her out for dinner and a movie. Take a day or so to let her stretch her legs and get caught up on stuff she may have missed. This should also allow you to get a better idea of how she may grant wishes. Even if the wishes back-fire, at least you got to have a lovely lady out on a date.
That sounds like a great idea! I wonder if they’re smart enough to do that…
Didn’t Neil take his, “New genie” out for Dinner and a movie? And now that Genie is obsessed with him.
If you are so worried you can always wish for this to happen to the genie and her bottle.

i doubt such a punishment would be called for, i’m sure that if Rouyaa ends up screwing them over it will be because of a misunderstanding or legitimate character reason, thing’s probably won’t be so Black and White.
sorry, i couldn’t help myself.
don’t trust genies? do what timmy turner did – get a lawyer!
I always felt the jerk genie trope was weak, because let’s face facts, anyone can twist any word or phrase into something horrible. It doesn’t matter if you have an army of lawyers. There will always be some arbitrary twist out of nowhere that makes sense in the most vague and whitewash way.
Is it just me or do Sid and Andy kinda look like Casey & Andy?
I don’t see the resemblance.
Their hairstyles and noses look similar to me, at least what i’d think they would look like in JB’s art style.
They might hold off on asking for any wishes for a while to scope her out and find out about her personality. She might be a member of the household for a while.
