Jean AKA Jeannie AKA Jeanie is a film, book, and magazine reviewer for a national magazine. Most of Jean’s work is done through email, which means he doesn't have to go into the office.
On a trip to find a gift for his girlfriend, Jean found an empty Genie Bottle. Upon picking up this bottle, Jean became the bottle’s new genie-powered occupant. Not only was Jean turned into a genie, but the bottle turned him into what he believed a genie of the bottle should look like. Which, due to his fascination with a classic 60s TV show, turned him into a busty blonde woman.
A junior engineer working for a small engineering firm in Cocoa Beach. The firm focuses mostly on NASA projects.
Neil is Jean’s best friend. When Jean was turned into a genie, Neil became Jeanie’s master.
Genies are a creation of arabic stories and as a culture the use of alcohol is banned. I’m not sure if those are related, but its interesting at least.
Why do I get the feeling Araceli had something too do with that moonshine? Maybe I’m reading too into the storyline but it seems the moment Neal mentioned the moonshine, Araceli ups and leaves… Hmm
@Bad Taiming Except Jean wasn’t an idiot for buying it, obviously the last time he bought Moonshine he was still human. Not knowing that moonshine affects genies like this doesn’t make him an idiot, this is the first time this happened to Jean.
No offense, but i don’t think you know what “idiot” means. Simply not knowing something does not make someone an “idiot”.
@Jakobs You are always an idiot for buying moonshine. Distillation produces two alcohols. Ethanol, which is the desired “gets you drunk” alcohol. And methanol, which is the stuff that can make you go blind or kill you. That’s the main reason alcohol production and sale is regulated – not to keep kids from drinking it, but to prevent inexperienced do-it-yourselfers from killing themselves and others.
@Makaira: You’re wrong — fermentation of sugars does not produce methanol in any relevant amounts. Being inexperienced as a distiller won’t in itself mean that you’re producing something that is toxic; the reason why people end up with moonshine containing dangerous amounts of methanol is because someone has mixed methanol (which is cheap) into the moonshine.
Or in other words — incidents like the one you linked to is not the result of inexperience, it’s either a result of terminal stupidity or effectively mass murder.
@ Makaira – Grain alcohol, as is produced in US moonshine has virtually no methanol in its production. Some fruit based moonshine produces a small amount of methanol, that can be easily removed by discarding the first amount of alcohol out of the still (50ml or so). The deaths in India are likely caused by contaminants added during or after the distilling process. The big problem with Moonshine is alcohol poisoning, it is normally very high in alcohol content.
I dislike Araceli thoroughly but in this case Bad Taiming is quite correct the moonshine has nothing to do with Araceli. Jeanie’s just reacting to it in a new way as she’s now a new species (and has a lower tolerance to these things). I’m hoping that it is just a bad reaction which will wear off the way being drunk would for a human and not that the moonshine really IS a weird genie potion by another genie.
If moonshine or an ingredient in moonshine is a genie poison, then could it cause sickness in genies by contact of skin too like a peanut allergy? Some of that moonshine had splashed out of the jar there when Neil and Araceli kissed there. It might’ve splashed onto Araceli there.
Hopefully there are genie antidotes/medicines out there too.
Poison can cause different reaction if it not in sufficient quantities or it could just cause allergic reactions like sneezing and poof all over the place. Which is an interesting reaction and problem to deal with.
Well, I’m guessing it’s just going to be like getting sober. Wait a while and the body naturally eliminates the alcohol. So in a few hours, depending on how much she drank, Jeannie will be back to “normal.” The time to metabolize might be different, so maybe longer or shorter time, but eventually it goes away. That’s my speculation.
It looks like that, not intentionally so since Araceli surprised Neil with that kiss. She might get sick there too if it’s contractable by contact of skin.
it is impossible unless in the moonshine there was some mercury or araceli’s skin is somehow made of living cells instead of death ones but if arceli’s skin was made of living cells i wander how is it that she is still alive, sorry for the bad geramer
You might get mercury poisoning from tuna, but probably not from moonshine. Lead poisoning is more likely, from stills put together with cheap lead-based solder.
What’s really causing Jean’s sneezing? Hopefully something that will actually advance the plotline.
Personally, I’m more interested in the last panel. It looks like Neil may have returned Araceli’s kiss.
Yes, the poison will be advancing the plot. You’ll see it move forward quite a lot in the coming weeks, in fact.
Also, I’m pretty sure Neil is just dumbstruck by Araceli’s gesture of affection.
@Mahdi-B: I’m not sure that genies’ bodies count as being alive or not, but they certainly aren’t human any more. The whole “you die if you run out of magic, but otherwise you’re immortal” effect is a big tipoff to that. Regardless, a poison that affects a genie through ingestion could very well also affect her via contact, but I honestly don’t know what CD has planned as far as that goes.
i thing i know were this is going, the moonshine will make jean use all his magic making him die in his genie form and that will release him and the bottle would want to have new genie and that would be neil, after all cd said that he played with that plot
That’s a good possibility. Since Jean was born a human, then turned genie, he might revert back if all his magic gets used up. I doubt however Jean’s willing to gamble with those odds to find out.
Once a Genie uses up all there magic, they die. It doesn’t make any difference that Jean was once a human, because, he or she isn’t human anymore. That why they don’t want to over use it. Otherwise a Genie would live forever.
Welp. NOW can he have fantasies?
Hah, that just gave me the following train of thought:
Fantasies about Araceli -> Fantasies about genies -> Fantasies about Jeanie!
Yes, he should definitely have some fantasies about Jeanie. 🙂
I support this fully.
So Genies can’t handle alcohol or just moonshine?
Genies are a creation of arabic stories and as a culture the use of alcohol is banned. I’m not sure if those are related, but its interesting at least.
It seems unlikely that Jeanie has never had alcohol since the transformation. She would have been drinking in Vegas if nowhere else.
Well at least his first kiss in the comic was not him as the girl.
Blue really does like him.
Well, he has done more than just kissing with Jeanie’s ex-girlfriend. Good at it too.
Why do I get the feeling Araceli had something too do with that moonshine? Maybe I’m reading too into the storyline but it seems the moment Neal mentioned the moonshine, Araceli ups and leaves… Hmm
Jeanie being a idiot has every thing to do with the shine. Reread the start of the arc it is not the first time Jean bought that stuff.
But i agree that it’s not Aracely’s fault.

@Sobaka Exactly! So no Makaira, Jean still isn’t an “idiot” here.

I wonder what kind of hangover Jean will get from this. If genies get hangovers.
If Jeannie got poisoned by something, could that poison be expelled from her by another genie?
It’ll wear off.
Otherwise she’s either stuck in the bottle forever or dies.
Either way, that would be the end of the strip. QED
Do the corks in the genie bottles ever go bad? “Waiter, I can’t drink this wine. It’s corked.”
lol Neil’s face is priceless after that kiss. XD
Poor Jeanie. 🙁
Did… did he just spill a little bit of the crazy moonshine on her before she left?
It looks like that, not intentionally so since Araceli surprised Neil with that kiss. She might get sick there too if it’s contractable by contact of skin.
Oooh – good pick up 🙂
I think Jenny already noticed it earlier.
Yeah, I did. I have a good eye for visual details.
it is impossible unless in the moonshine there was some mercury or araceli’s skin is somehow made of living cells instead of death ones but if arceli’s skin was made of living cells i wander how is it that she is still alive, sorry for the bad geramer
Whaaaa…?
what do you mean by “Whaaaa…?”

so you are saying that genies bodies are some how synthetic
More like “made of magic”, though I suppose “synthetic” covers that.
so the spill will affect her
I don’t know. It may be a poison that only works when ingested.
The Djinn, are nature spirits.

I wonder if Genies are able to reform criminals.
