I must say that Natalie did a wonderful job. And come on, why is she wondering why Roge is staring at her chest.
Probably the least informed question ever. She HAS to know why. There’s still a male brain bouncing around in there.
Well, she did spend a lot of time on her hair, and not much at all on her chest (specifically). Maybe she’s expecting a compliment on the hair due to the extra effort, since it’s the main thing on her mind?
I love that we started referring to Neil with feminine pronouns.

It’s almost 5 years later, I’ve come back and read these comments, and I finally get the joke that becky21k made. lol
Well that is a very female reaction, hairdo, makeup, clothes and the guys just staring at your chest. Their breasts they’re not that interesting.
Also she looks adorable in the second panel where she’s struggling with her hair and I love the fact shes making roger late because she’s not used to all the female things as her Jeanie usually takes care of them for her.
Not that interesting? They’re breasts. They’re interesting solely for that reason.
And sexism aside this rather supports Roge not having a lot of dating experience.
She didn’t say why are you looking at my chest. She said why are you JUST looking at my chest. She’s a guy and she understands guys and her expectations of his motivations are not unrealistic, but she thinks he should at least notice the effort she put into the rest. So no, this is not a very “female” reaction, it’s entirely grounded in reasonable sense and it’s exactly what you would expect of a man who was temporarily a woman in this situation.
Last panel: You’re a smart boy “Nat.” I’m certain you can figure it out.
Chill out Roger, for a short time in your dreary life you have a beautiful, but temporary woman by your side, so bask in the limelight and show off sexily Neillie to your nerdy friends, come Monday will come all too soon
It’s good to see neil learning how to do girly things.
I think it is more Natalie calling out Roger, like an ‘eyes up here’. Neil is doing a great job as the male pooft’d into a female as she is trying to learn hair / makeup.
I think if Neil was calling Roger out (s)he’d have more of an angry/frustrated expression. That looks more like confusiuon/surprise to me.
Probably he’d be happier if she was dressed the way she is in Panel Two…
Suddenly learning how much effort women go through to look great will be a real eye opener to Natalie. Now for the “Prettier, Sexier” competition with the other women at the reception.

I’m intrigued that Natalie went to this much trouble to look this good. She could have done passing well with a simpler outfit and less work. Instead–not only did she do her hair, she’s wearing earrings, even a choker.
I wonder if she’s wearing perfume.

And I wonder, oh how I wonder, how she’s going to react to having darn near every male eye she meets spelunking her cleavage. Will she cling to Roger for protection? Will she find herself like Firefly-mechanic Kaylee at the Shindig? Will she leave Roger for a guy who actually knows how to flirt, even seduce?
And how will she get along with the other girls at the convention, most of whom will not be engineers, and some of whom will be working the crowd?
When the reception is over, is she going to want to dance? I bet not with Roger.
Will she have trouble getting to sleep when she gets back to the room?

I think the choker is actually part of the dress that is holding up the fishnet, or whatever it’s called (brain blanked), along with the straps.
And if he followed the videos instructions, most definitely perfume is worn.

I did see the skin, but the thought of a slit never came to me. I thought it might be a short skirt with a pennant-style hem. (I don’t know the right word for this kind of skirt. Goth styles use it to give something of a tattered look.)
And, yes, you’re right about the “choker”. I couldn’t see the green color when I first saw it; it just looked black.
My, hah, research indicates that her top, or “bodice”, is called an overlay, I think made of chiffon or something similar.

This may be politically incorrect to say, but it’s entirely natural for the pronoun gender to attach to the body. That’s what people see, after all.
Frankly, Neil is not going to a whole lot of trouble to assert a male persona. He kinda didn’t do that very well even as a male.
And in this getup? Natalie’s as female as they come. It’s difficult for me to think of her as anything but female.

Why would Natalie actually bother to ask that? “She” knows the answer from first-hand experience.
Little known fact:
Evolution, under pressure from an over-enthusiastic marketing division, has re-purposed the human female mammary glands as radomes for high gain antennas beaming out powerful mind control rays.
The possessors of these formidable weapons are necessarily immune to their inbuilt radiation hazards.
This self-immunity has the side effect of preventing Natalie from remembering what it was like, as a male, to be on the receiving end of these twin broadcasts.
She will have to learn from experience, as any natural born transmitting station does.

Some kind of pad, or laptop, yeah. It’s showing a video on hairstyling.
O.K. Then its agree then, we all chip in and buy Natalie a tire thumper*. *It’s a small club with a metal rod in it to check tires on a truck, by listening to the sound of the tire.

I had to let this sink in, but now I’m agreeing with you and kinda kicking myself for not getting it right off. Natalie is not making the usual “my eyes are up here, buddy” complaint.
It’s more than the hair, though; that’s just the step we got to see.
It’s, well, everything. Neal’s a perfectionist, I think, so Natalie’s done her level best to look good, including dress, hair, earrings, possibly perfume and makeup, possibly heels. Not for the sexual effect, necessarily, but because she’s driven to do everything she does right.
No surprise, she wants to be praised for the work she’s put into this. (I think praise is something Neal doesn’t get remotely enough of. Neal loves praise for his work more than money. He lives with a beautiful woman who mocks him without mercy, and while he can take it from Jean, guy to guy, from Jeanie that’s got to sting on a level he’s probably not fully conscious of.)
And her desire to be applauded for a part well acted is, as the evening progresses, going to grow into a much more visceral hunger.
Natalie won’t settle for just playing a role. She’s going to want to be appreciated as the gorgeous woman she now is.
Neal’s never in his life been physically attractive. Where natural born girls grow into it, starting as toddlers, Natalie’s about to be a star, right out of the gate.That’s going to be heady, heady wine.
I said it upthread, but it needs repeating in this context: Roger better watch out. Natalie’s going to be attracting a lot of attention, and there will be guys out there who will have the sense to appreciate the whole package.
Roger, not to put too fine a point on it, may have the room to himself tonight.

A course there is make up, neil is a engineer and the details all matter.
hm… at this point Roger is bordering the ‘creepy’ line… certainly a bit of a creep anyway.
Nah, not at all. Not creepy, just annoying (and at that, not for staring , but for not appreciating all the hard work Natalie put in on the total package).
He’s a socially clueless nerd, he has a really cute girl who’s been spending a lot of time with him, she packed filmy lingerie for the trip, and now she’s wearing a knock out dress with cleavage.
Of course he’s going to stare. He’d have to either be made of stone, or have a lot more experience than he does, not to stare.
